Former Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo has told outgoing governors to be ready for what is to come.

Dankwambo said, “be prepared for the visits of institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit who may ask some questions that need answers.”

In the same vain, the Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has advised outgoing governors to abstain from interfering in the governance of their states as they prepare to leave office later this month.

Saraki, Dankwambo and others spoke at the farewell dinner for outgoing governors, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

They spoke to the outgoing governors on preparing for life after office.

Also, the former governor of Kwara State, Saraki, urged the 18 outgoing governors to make the necessary adjustments to play their roles in national development.

While commending the outgoing governor for the services rendered to their respective states, Saraki said, “When you are no longer governor, allow your successor to do their work. Go back to your families. I am sure your wives, children and grandchildren are counting the days. You are bracing for a new phase of life, which is completely different. Spend more time with your families. Save your money for hampers and rams because they won’t come as usual.”

The former Senate President also urged the newly-elected governors to start planning their exit from day one, even as he harped on the significance of self-challenge for development.

“To our incoming governors, start planning and preparing for governance. Plan your exit from day one and keep challenging yourselves,” Saraki said.

Taking the floor,  Dankwambo recalled the difficulty of transiting from office to out of it, narrating how an unnamed former governor, who had a flight to catch to Benin City, kept sitting and sipping coffee in the departure lounge of a Nigerian airport, not knowing that the plane had taken off.

According to Dankwambo, the incident, which drew a thunderous laughter from the audience, happened because the former governor as usual was waiting for his aides to remind him of boarding time.

He urged outgoing governors to bear with the pressure of friction likely to occur between them and their successors.

“You are retiring from work, not life. Avoid meddling in the affairs of your predecessors. As you get older, your health cannot be taken for granted. You have to bear with the pressure,” he said, urging the incoming governors to “begin to prepare for retirement as soon as you are sworn in. Be prepared for the visits of such institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit who may ask some questions that need answers.”

Sharing his own experiences on life after office, a former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, called on new and returning governors to prioritise the people’s welfare, irrespective of their political affiliations.

Lekki Deep Seaport: Commercial Operation Gathers Momentum As 4 Vessels Berth, Discharge Cargoes

As commercial operation gathered momentum at the Lekki Deep Seaport, the Lekki Freeport Terminal said four commercial vessels have so far berthed and discharged cargoes successfully at the port.

Chief commercial officer, LFT, Kehinde Olubi-Neye, disclosed that the port has been receiving import volumes and export of empty containers since commercial operation started.

According to him, though the import volumes are still low, there are hope of commercial operation picking up fully in few days to come.

“We have been having volumes of import discharges, we have been having export of empty containers and we will start exporting fully laden export containers in no near future. The volume is low at this point and it takes a while for this things to materialise.

“Vessels are already on services as at today and most shipping lines run weekly service and their booking plans they have commitment towards delivering cargoes to specific ports as seen on their bill of laden and it takes time for that to switch,” he said.

He further disclosed that over $100million has been invested in cargo and terminal handling equipment.

Olubi-Neye, said the Port has the needed equipment and the draft to recover transship cargo bound for landlocked neighbouring countries back into the country.

“The Lekki Freeport Terminal has discussed with stakeholders including Nigeria Customs Service and that they are confident that recovering transshipment cargo not just for the hinterland but also for landlocked countries and other regional countries will be back in the country,” he said.

However, he said the port has also seen the opportunity to play a role in the uptake of cargo in the Eastern Ports, which is why they are currently having discussions on moving containers discharged at Lekki Port by barge to the Eastern Ports of Calabar, Warri, and Onitsha River Port among others to help increase the economy of those ports.

On cargo evacuation from the port, he added that the Lekki Port operates an automated system that is linked to the automated gate with the vehicle booking system where truck drivers are required to book appointments in advance.

Rare Rainbow Sea Slug Discovered In Falmouth Rock Pool

0

A rock pooler has found a rare sea slug while searching around the coast of south Cornwall.

Vicky Barlow was poking around the pools of Falmouth when she found the rainbow sea slug, usually found in warmer waters.

According to experts there have been only three previous sightings of the creature in the UK and this was the first in a rockpool.

The first sighting is thought to have been in 2022 off the Isles of Scilly.

“There have been a handful of sightings by divers and snorkelers since but, as far as we can tell, this is the first time this species has been found by a rock pooler in the UK,” said marine biologist Dr Ben Holt of the Rock Pool Project.

The rainbow sea slug, or Babakina anadoni, is a member of the aeolid nudibranch family, which are characterised by their bright colours and unusual shapes, he said.

It is usually found in warm sea waters off the west coast of Spain, Portugal and France.

Spotting the sea slug was part of a pattern of “massive changes” in sealife seen around the South West over the last five years, said Dr Holt.

“It’s an amazing find and I expect we will see more of them,” he said.

“It is also quite remarkable because rock pools are quite a harsh environment with the tide going in and out.”

Exploring Palácio Da Pena, Portugal

2

Palácio da Pena, or as it is in English Pena Palace, is a castle and also one of the most important, as well as finest tourist attractions located in the municipality of Sintra in the Portuguese Republic.

As it stands on top of a hil surrounded with forested park, the castle represents the Romanesque Revival architectural style, where on a clear day it can be easily spotted from the capital city of Portugal, Lisbon.

This hedonistic mix of vividly painted terraces, decorative battlements and mythological statues, all of which stand at stark contrast to the lush greens of the forests that encircle Pena, is also a national monument and part of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.

Even though the construction began in the Middle Ages, it was completed some time in 1854 according to the design of Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege.

However, the biggest credit most likely is to be given to the King Ferdinand II, whereas the castle was meant to be a summer home for the Portuguese royals.

Nonetheless, the styles which are mixed perfectly have some interesting eclecticism that includes the Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic and Neo-Renaissance styles.

The whole structure stands atop the rock of the Sintra Mountains, and it can be divided in four different sections.

Beginning with the two gateways together with the enveloping walls and the foundation making the first section, continuing with the restored structure of the old convent, and the clock tower as second.

The Arches Yard in front of the chapel, with its wall of Moorish arches are representing the third section and finishes with the palatial zone and its cylindrical bastion, with interiors decorated in the cathédrale style.

Still, the interior of the Pena Palace is fascinating as the exterior is, yet, being restored to reflect the decor, it was abandoned in 1910 when the Portuguese nobility fled to Brazil to escape the revolution, and today it gives the sense to every visitor of a certain time from the past.

With its amazing stuccoes, painted walls in trompe-l’oeil and in various revetments in tile from the 19th century, the Pena Palace nowadays is classified as an important UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Yet, it is seen as one of the grandest instances of Romantic architecture with its colorful ‘towers’, and most likely one of the most visited places in the country where many people do enjoy in its beauty.

Swiss Village Evacuated Over Rockslide Threat

0

The Swiss Alpine community of Brienz turned into a ghost village as authorities started the last day of evacuations of residents threatened by the increasing risk of rockslides from a nearby mountain.

Brienz’s fewer than 100 villagers were given just 48 hours to pack what they could and abandon their homes.

Even the dairy cows were loaded up for departure after geologists warned a rockfall was imminent.

Two million cubic metres of rock is coming loose from the mountain above, and a rockslide could obliterate the village.

The village has been judged a geological risk for some time and is built on land that is subsiding down towards the valley, causing the church spire to lean and large cracks to appear in buildings.
