U17 AFCON: Nigeria Coach Ugbade Modest In Defeat

0

Nigeria’s coach Nduka Ugbade has said his players gave their all and does not fault them following their 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the quarter finals of the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Algiers on Thursday.

Nigeria’s hope of a third title and qualification to the FIFA World Cup was thwarted following the defeat, and Ugbade has now been left to pick the pieces of their broken hearts.

“The players are disappointed of course because they are young but we must support them because they need to continue their careers. We should work on their development because I believe that some of these players will eventually move to the senior national team,” the tactician said after the defeat to Burkina Faso.

He adds; “I am happy with the performance of our players and in such competitions, even if you lose, you gain something by developing the players for the future.”

Looking back at the defeat to Burkina Faso, Ugbade says they would have had a different result were they more clinical infront of goal.

“Everything worked as we had planned, but we could not score with the chances we had. We paid dearly for that. We learn the lessons and move on,” he said.

The tactician believes that the defeat will more so work to strengthen the mentality of the players, backing them to bounce back in future age categories.

West Ham moved a step closer to a first European final for 47 years as Michail Antonio sealed a 2-1 win over AZ Alkmaar in the Conference League semi-final first leg on Thursday.

While West Ham eye a landmark final appearance, FC Basel are chasing history of their own after seizing control of the other semi-final with a dramatic 2-1 victory against Fiorentina.

At the London Stadium, David Moyes’ side trailed to Tijjani Reijnders’ first-half goal before fighting back with a stirring display after the interval.

Said Benrahma equalised with a penalty before Antonio bagged the late winner to put West Ham in control of the tie ahead of the second leg in the Netherlands on May 18.

West Ham have won 12 of their 13 games in the competition this season, taking them to the brink of a first major trophy since the 1980 FA Cup.

Last season, the Hammers lost in the Europa League semi-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt, but they are in position to go further this term.

The east Londoners haven’t reached a major European final since they were beaten by Anderlecht in the 1976 Cup Winners Cup showpiece.

That leaves Moyes’ men free to concentrate on winning the club’s first European trophy since the Cup Winners Cup in 1965.

But Moyes said: “We’ve got a really tough game to come. I’m too humble to say we’re already in the final. Alkmaar have some good players and they showed it tonight.”

Despite being one of the smaller clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie, AZ have reached their first European semi-final since 2005.

Europa League: Juve snatches Late draw against Sevilla

Federico Gatti headed home in the 97th minute to earn Juventus a 1-1 draw against Sevilla in their Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday.

Youssef En-Nesyri gave the record six-time champions the lead in the first half and they seemed set to take that advantage back to Seville before Gatti’s late intervention.

Moroccan international En-Nesyri finished a sharp counter-attack in the 26th minute to break the deadlock in Turin.

Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side deserved their lead at the break and although Juventus improved, the Andalucians shut them out well in their bid to take their advantage back to the rowdy Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan next week.

However Gatti nodded home from point blank range after substitute Paul Pogba headed the ball back into his path from a corner.

Sevilla, who dumped Manchester United out in the quarter-finals, have never been knocked out of the tournament in the semi-final stage.

Gatti, who also struck for Juventus in the quarter-finals against Sporting, ensured the Italians remained unbeaten at home in the Europa League this season.

Sevilla players were left frustrated as the 24-year-old center-back nodded in after the six minutes of time added on had expired, but will have to wait until next week to set things straight.

Gagosian To Close One Of Its London Galleries After 19 Years

0

Gagosian, the world’s largest gallery empire, will shutter one of its three London locations after 19 years in operation. The space, sited on Britannia Street, near King’s Cross, will officially close this summer, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the news on Thursday.

Opened in 2004, the Britannia Street location was the second gallery that Gagosian ever opened in London, one of the world’s main art hubs. (Its first, on Heddon Street, closed in 2005.) Occupying more than 15,000 square feet, it is slightly smaller than at least one of the other two Gagosian spaces in London.

Gagosian will continue to maintain its London galleries on Grosvenor Hill and Davies Street.

The Financial Times report did not state why Gagosian had chosen to shutter the Britannia Street gallery. It is, however, not the first blue-chip gallery to scale back its presence in London, a city whose market faced uncertainty following Brexit in 2020.

That year, Marian Goodman Gallery, a much smaller enterprise that also has significant clout in the market, shuttered its London gallery in order to “pursue a more nimble approach” there, according to its founder. It’s possible that Gagosian may have similar reasons for ending business on Britannia Street, as the Financial Times reported that the gallery has plans to launch Gagosian Open, which will situate artworks in public sites around London.

The Britannia Street gallery is not the first one that Gagosian, a business characterized by rapid expansion in the past couple decades, has shuttered recently. In 2021, the gallery closed its San Francisco space in order to better concentrate its efforts in Los Angeles, where it took over the Marciano Art Foundation’s building.

Still, Gagosian has not stopped growing. Since 2020 alone, the gallery has announced plans to open new spaces in Paris, Athens, and Gstaad, Switzerland. And in the past year, the gallery has added around ten artists to its roster, among them Nan Goldin, Cy Gavin, and Jadé Fadojutimi.

Fasina also disclosed that there is a law to prosecute any adult who sleeps with anybody below the age of 18 in Ogun State.

In addition, she warned the students not get involved in social vices, emphasising that any student found culpable would be remanded in the juvenile correctional home.

The Head, Sexual and Assault Referral Centres- Toyin Orelaja, while admonishing the students to take their destinies and future in their hands explained that an abused child is a dysfunctional adult, adding that a closed mouth is a closed destiny.

Taraba Governor Approves ₦2 Billion For Luxury Cars

0

18 days to the end of his tenure, the Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, approved N2 billion to purchase luxury vehicles for himself, his deputy and their wives.

A source, who asked not to be named for fear of being victimised, said the approval was made during the last State Executive Council (SEC) meeting chaired by Ishaku.

“Governor Darius Ishaku in our last SEC meeting asked the council to approve a memo he presented for the purchase of vehicles for himself, his deputy and their wives and it was speedily approved without any argument,” the source said.

The source said it was argued at the meeting that since Darius and his deputy assumed office in 2015, they had been using old vehicles inherited from their predecessors and that they, therefore, deserve new vehicles as they prepare to step down.

Our source disclosed that going by the memo presented by the governor, Darius and his wife will get over N1.3 billion worth of exotic cars while his deputy and his wife will receive cars worth N750 million.

The source further explained that by the proposal, the governor will get two Toyota Land Cruiser SUV, two escort Toyota Hilux and a utility vehicle. In contrast, his wife will get a Land Cruiser SUV and an escort vehicle.

Similarly, the deputy governor, Haruna Manu, will receive two lower versions of Land Cruiser SUV and a lone escort vehicle while his wife will get one SUV and a utility car.

When contacted, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Lois Emmanuel, did not deny or confirm the approval.

She said “I am not in the state. I travelled out. I am not aware, I will confirm,” she said, before terminating the call.

However, she was seen a few hours later at the commissioning of a housing project by the governor in Jalingo, the state capital.

Ishaku contested the last senatorial election to represent Taraba South but was defeated by the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, David Jim-Kuta.

His deputy, on the other hand, contested and won the Taraba Central Senatorial seat.

Burkina Faso however held on to claim a famous victory over the Eaglets as they booked their place at the 2023 World Cup.
