Museum Leaders In Sudan Protest Looting, Damage Of Cultural Heritage

0

Factional violence has engulfed Sudan, and the country’s museums are caught in the crossfires, prompting calls from artists and museum professionals to safeguard its imperiled cultural heritage.

Last week, the International Council of Museums published a report from Sara Abdalla Khidir Saeed, director of the Sudan Natural History Museum, detailing the dire circumstances of numerous institutions.

“Museums are now without guard to protect them from looting and vandalism,” Saeed said. “In light of the daily deteriorating situation due to the lack of food and life resources, weak souls will be exploited to steal [artifacts from] important museums and smuggle them out of the country.”

Saeed singled out the Sudan National Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the Republican Palace Museum, and the Sudan Natural History Museum, all located in the capital city of Khartoum, which is currently besieged by gunfire between army and rival paramilitary forces.

Reports surfaced at the end of April that the National Museum, a repository of thousands of years of human history, had suffered looting. It houses the world’s most wide-ranging Nubian archaeological collection, with some artifacts dating back to the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras.

Present-day Sudan was a significant crossroads centuries ago for early African kingdoms, and surviving artifacts are invaluable to constructing a comprehensive human history. Khalid Albaih, a Khartoum-based artist and journalist, recently told the Art Newspaper that the museum “has also become a battleground” and that “no one knows how much damage the [National Museum] took.”

The civil war in Sudan has raged since mid-April, when Sudan’s military ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the country’s deputy and head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, began vying for political power. The two men were allies during the 2019 popular uprising against Sudan’s longtime leader, Omar al-Bashir, and tentatively shared power following his ouster.

Saeed shared that no one has been able to access the National Museum since the beginning of the war, leaving countless live specimens—endangered Nile crocodiles and monitors, rare birds, and more—to slowly die from thirst and starvation. “The [Museum] is located close to the Sudanese army’s headquarters, which means anyone walking around will be shot immediately as was the case with one of the university students.”

“The war in Sudan must be stopped immediately,” she said.

Napoli Wins 1st Title In 33 Years

0

Napoli have won their first Scudetto since 1990 after Victor Osimhen’s second-half goal secured a 1-1 draw at Udinese on Thursday night.

They came within six minutes of securing the title on Sunday, but drew with Salemitana , meaning that Lazio had a mathematical chance to overtake the runaway leaders. That chance has now disappeared, with Napoli’s lead now at 16 points with just five games remaining in the season.

Sandi Lovrić’s clinical finish from inside the penalty area on 13 minutes rocked Luciano Spalletti’s side, who struggled to create chances at the other end, although Osimhen threatened with a couple of first-half headers.

But when the Nigeria striker pounced 12 minutes after half-time, calmly side-footing in a rebound, it sparked celebrations among thousands of travelling Napoli supporters.

The US consulate issued a security alert last week, saying “spontaneous celebrations could last multiple days” and warned of “heavy traffic or road closures, significant use fireworks, and alcohol consumption throughout the city”.

Police had banned fireworks but that did not stop the Neapolitan sky being lit up as soon as the Udinese game was over. Authorities also banned car and scooter traffic from the city centre in the hope of minimising risk to public order.

Napoli have led the table for most of the season, producing the best and most entertaining football by some distance, spearheaded by Osimhen and the Georgia winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. They have lost three league games all season.

They also looked on course to go far in the Champions League before a surprise 2-1 aggregate defeatagainst Milan at the quarter-final stage.

Ukraine War: Russia Accused Of Using Phosphorus Bombs In Bakhmut

0

Ukraine has accused Russia of attacking the besieged city of Bakhmut with phosphorus munitions.

In drone footage released by Ukraine’s military, Bakhmut can be seen ablaze as what appears to be white phosphorus rains down on the city.

White phosphorus weapons are not banned, but their use in civilian areas is considered a war crime.

They create fast-spreading fires that are very difficult to put out. Russia has been accused of using them before.

Russia has been trying to capture Bakhmut for months, despite its questionable strategic value. Western officials have estimated that thousands of Moscow’s troops have died in the assault.

Writing on Twitter, Ukraine’s defence ministry said the attack had targeted “unoccupied areas of Bakhmut with incendiary ammunition”.

It is unclear when it took place. But the footage shared by Ukraine – seemingly captured by a surveillance drone – showed high-rise buildings engulfed in flames.

Other videos posted to social media showed fires raging on the ground and white clouds illuminating the night sky.

Real Madrid Defeat Osasuna To Win Copa Del Rey

0

Rodrygo goals fired Real Madrid to Copa del Rey glory with a clinical double in a 2-1 victory over Osasuna in Seville on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid earned their 20th Spanish Cup in their 40th final, ending a nine-year wait to lift the trophy again.

Osasuna, who have never won a major trophy, fought well but ultimately fell short against the reigning Spanish and European champions, who face Manchester City on Tuesday in the Champions League semi-finals.

Rodrygo fired Madrid ahead inside two minutes and Ancelotti’s team had the better chances in the first half.

However, Lucas Torro levelled for Osasuna in the 58th minute to give them hope of an upset in their first cup final since 2005, and second ever.

Rodrygo was on hand again, though, to fire home after a rebound fell his way and ensure Madrid would take the trophy back to the capital.

Ancelotti left midfielder Luka Modric on the bench after injury, while Jagoba Arrasate deployed midfielder Jon Moncayola at right-back to try and stop Madrid winger Vinicius Junior.

It didn’t work. Vinicius broke in down the left in the second minute and his dangerous cut-back was missed by Fede Valverde but slammed home by Rodrygo.

The Brazilian, in sparkling form, scored the earliest Copa del Rey final goal since 2006 — a year after Osasuna finished runners-up to Real Betis.

Karim Benzema should have doubled Madrid’s lead but Sergio Herrera saved brilliantly to deny the forward after another lightning Vinicius break.

Osasuna earned a foothold in the game and came inches from equalising when on loan Barcelona winger Ez Abde broke through on goal.

The forward capitalised on an Eder Militao error and, one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois, lofted the ball over the Belgian goalkeeper, but Dani Carvajal cleared off the line.

Madrid continued to push for their second goal — David Alaba struck the crossbar with a free kick and Vinicius went down in the box under pressure from Osasuna defender David Garcia.

His appeals were waved away and Vinicius clashed with Garcia, who attended the 2005 final as a childhood supporter, who ruffled his hair to annoy him further.

Vinicius was booked just before half-time for complaining and exchanged heated words with Osasuna substitute Chimy Avila as the players walked in at half-time, with Lucas Vazquez wading in to stop the argument.

Torro drilled Osasuna level from the edge of the box when Abde’s deflected cross fell into his path.

The club’s passionate supporters celebrated wildly, including letting off a flare which needed to be extinguished, and one fan was taken away on a stretcher, although he appeared to be smiling.

Osasuna’s joy did not last long though, with Vinicius making another dangerous burst in down the left.

The forward fed Toni Kroos, whose shot was blocked, but Rodrygo was in the right place at the right time to finish with aplomb and put Madrid’s name on the trophy.

Queen Elizabeth’s Absence Felt At King Charles’ Coronation

0

King Charles III’s coronation was marked by many touching tributes to his late mother Queen Elizabeth II.

The historic ceremony Saturday was Britain’s first coronation since Elizabeth was crowned 70 years ago. Charles immediately ascended to the throne following his mother’s death in September at the age of 96.

As Charles was crowned alongside his wife Queen Camilla at London’s Westminster Abbey, many royal watchers noted the absence of the beloved late monarch.

“If anything, I think the queen’s absence was felt more than anything,” royal expert Shannon Felton Spence said in an interview.

“We are not used to not having her in those spaces. To have a ceremony like that and not have Queen Elizabeth II there is still strange to see. Her absence was felt.

“For the past 10 years, she has very intentionally been moving Charles into those spaces (like the opening of Parliament) so that we would be accustomed to seeing him there, but she couldn’t have prepared us for not having her there.”

Elizabeth was the longest-serving monarch in British history. She ascended to the throne at the age of 25 after her father King George VI’s unexpected death in February 1952. Her coronation took place 14 months later in June 1953.

Prince William And Kate Middleton Share New Video To Celebrate King Charles’ Coronation

Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrated King Charles III’s coronation with a new clip they shared after the conclusion of the historic day.

The Princess and Princess of Wales posted a recap video that featured official footage of the festivities following the crowning of King Charles and Queen Camilla at London’s Westminster Abbey on Saturday.

“What. A. Day.,” the couple wrote on their official Twitter page.

“Thank you to everyone who made it happen,” they added.

At the beginning of the video, Kate, 41, and William, 40, were seen clad in their formal robes and mantels as they walked down steps leaving for Westminster Abbey.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were joined by their children Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5. The family was seen smiling while getting into black SUVs on their way to the royal church.

The minute-long video featured highlights of the day including the royal procession and the flypast over Buckingham Palace. William, Kate and their children were seen waving from their carriage and smiling while gathered with the royal family on the palace balcony.

The video ended with a closing shot of Charles waving while standing on the balcony with Camilla.

The historic ceremony was Britain’s first coronation since Charles mother Queen Elizabeth II was crowned 70 years ago. The coronation was marked with touching tributes to the late monarch, who died at the age of 96 in Scotland last September.

AFCON U-17: Ugbade Delighted With Golden Eaglets Quarter Finals Ticket

0

Nigeria’s coach Nduka Ugbade has said he was relieved to see his side come off the right side of a 3-2 thriller against South Africa and qualify to the quarter finals of the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Constantine on Saturday.

The victory saw the Golden Eaglets finish second in Group B and earn an available automatic qualification slot.

“It was a really tough match because South Africa were really good team and they gave us a tough time. They have three players that are really good; Mabena (Siyabonga), Mkhawana (Vicky) and Dokunmu (Michael). They are very talented players and I was honestly scared of them at first,” Ugbade said after the match.

He was delighted to see his side finally firing well to score three goals, having struggled to find the back of the net in their first two games despite creating so many chances.

“We worked a bit in training and we did some corrections. We realized that it was purely psychological and we talked to the players and we saw an improvement. We might have conceded two but I am glad we scored three,” said the tactician.

Nigeria will now await the second placed team from Group C, either Burkina Faso or Cameroon, in the quarter finals in their quest to quench a 16 year wait for the title and earn a record extending third crown.

Transfer: Osimhen Is Going Nowhere, Says Napoli President

0

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has warned off any interested parties looking to buy Victor Osimhen this summer. The Nigerian striker is set to be the centre of mass interest from some of Europe’s top clubs.

Having scored the goal that helped his side secure the Serie A title for the first time in over 30 years, Osimhen is the top marksman in Italy and has attracted attention of Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich with his red hot form.

He wasn’t able to help Napoli to bypass AC Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals despite his best attempts in the second leg but is still valued at well over £100m, according to reports in Germany.

According to their president, though, there isn’t a price that would result in the 24-year-old being sold at the end of the season. “I will not sell Victor Osimhen this summer — no way,” De Laurentiis said.

He also passed comment on the future of Luciano Spalletti, a manager that Chelsea have considered for the vacant head coach role themselves.

Frank Lampard has uttered four words that will worry Todd Boehly and the Chelsea owners. The 44-year-old had lost six out of six since taking over as interim manager before facing Bournemouth and has only gone to show why the club is in such a mess.

Although the club legend has struggled to turn things around on the pitch and the atmosphere within the camp appears no better either, Lampard has taken a strong line when assessing the malaise.

“In the time I’ve been here it’s clear to see behind the scenes, on the training ground, the reasons why. If you’re going to be a nice team to play against all the time it doesn’t matter where you go,” he said after the loss to Arsenal.

Given his stance on things, ‘it’s clear to see’ appears to be something that new owners are yet to realise and that only makes things worse.

Benoit Badiashile proved Frank Lampard’s decision to start him right with a stellar performance as Chelsea picked up a crucial win against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. The Frenchman completed a £35million move from Monaco to Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window.

The Blues took an early lead after Conor Gallagher latched on to a brilliant N’Golo Kante cross to nod the ball past Neto. Matias Vina equalised just minutes later as the two sides went into the half-time break level at 1-1.

Badiashile restored Chelsea’s lead with his first goal for the club, volleying the ball past Neto after getting on the end of a Hakim Ziyech free-kick. Substitute Joao Felix sealed the win after Raheem Sterling set the Portuguese forward up to slot home as Lampard breathed a sigh of relief to finally pick up his first three points since returning as caretaker manager.

U-17 AFCON: Golden Eaglets Face Burkina Faso Or Cameroon In Quarters

0

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will now face either defending champions Cameroon or Burkina Faso in the quarter-finals after they defeated South Africa 3-2 on Saturday night.

The West Africans finished in second position in Group B, with six points, behind the Atlas Cubs of Morocco.

The two-time champions will know their opponent later tonight when Burkina Faso and Cameroon battle in a winner-takes-all Group C clash at the May 19 Stadium, Annaba.

The Golden Eaglets defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 to win the WAFU Cup in Niger Republic last year.

On Saturday night, Nduka Ugbade’s side rallied twice to beat South Africa.

South Africa took an early lead through Vicky Mkhawana, while Charles Agada equalised for Nigeria on 34 minutes.

The Amajimbos went into the half-time with a goal advantage after Siyabonga Mabena gave them the lead for the second time in the game.

The Eaglets fought back again with Light Eke equalising a few minutes into the second half.

Abubakar Abdullahi then netted the winner for Nigeria with Emmanuel Micheal providing the assist.
