The Argentine’s name was jeered by some PSG fans as the teams were announced prior to the 1-0 home defeat against Lyon in Ligue 1.

Messi, who recently won the World Cup for Argentina, will Miss PSG’s next two games, in Troyes this Sunday, and against Ajaccio on Saturday, May 13.

Charles Engola, Uganda’s state minister for labour, employment and industrial relations, was shot dead by his bodyguard.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga, said the minister was shot dead at about 8 am local time on Tuesday at his home in Kampala, the country’s capital.

Enanga declared it a murder-suicide case.

He said “(Engola) was shot at his residence in Kyanja by one of his bodyguards who allegedly fired several shots at close range. He fled from the scene up to the trading centre at Kyanja, Ring road where he entered a salon and also shot himself dead.”

The shooter was identified as Wilson Sabiiti, an ex-soldier.

According to a witness, Sabiiti complained that the minister owed him several months of unpaid salary as he shot in the air to warn civilians at Kyanja town, moments before turning the gun at himself.

“The guard said he hadn’t been paid Ush4 million (about $1,000). He said he had a pregnant woman and his children were not going to school, yet the minister’s children were schooling,” the eyewitness said.

Alcaraz breezes into Madrid Open quarter-finals

0

World number two Carlos Alcaraz breezed past Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 to reach the Madrid Open quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Third-ranked Daniil Medvedev crashed out against Russian compatriot Aslan Karatsev, 7-6 (7/1), 6-4.

In the women’s competition world number two Aryna Sabalenka was forced to sweat by Mayar Sherif but eventually came through 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to reach the semi-finals.

Top-seeded Spaniard Alcaraz, who also beat Zverev in last season’s Madrid final, gained revenge for the German’s triumph when they met later in the 2022 French Open quarter-finals.

Two-time Madrid winner Zverev, was blown away in the opening set. He improved a little in the second but not sufficiently to trouble Alcaraz, who moved his opponent around at will.

Zverev zipped past Hugo Grenier 6-1, 6-0 in the third round, appearing to find form after the ankle injury he suffered last year, but was exposed by a razor sharp Alcaraz.

The US Open champion dropped just two points in the first set in his near-immaculate service games, and put strong pressure on the German’s serve.

Alcaraz converted his third break point to take a 2-0 lead in the 11-minute second game, before wresting another from Zverev for 5-1, consolidating to take the set.

The duo traded blows on serve at the start of the second set before Alcaraz carved out a break for 3-2 when Zverev sent a forehand return wide.

Alcaraz again broke for a 5-2 lead with a neat forehand down the line and triumphed on serve when Zverev batted a return long.

Alcaraz, who turns 20 on Friday, is aiming for his 10th tour-level title after defending the Barcelona Open in April.

In the last eight, the Murcian will face Karen Khachanov who dispatched Andrey Rublev 7-6 (10/8), 6-4 in another all-Russian battle.

Martin Odegaard fired Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League as the Norway midfielder’s double inspired a 3-1 win against woeful Chelsea on Tuesday.

Mikel Arteta’s side lost control of the title race after last week’s 4-1 defeat at Manchester City.

But the Gunners signaled their intention to push City all the way to the wire with a much-needed first win in five games.

Odegaard’s brace was followed by a Gabriel Jesus strike as the hosts raced into a three-goal before half-time at the Emirates Stadium.

Noni Madueke’s second half goal was no consolation for Chelsea’s wretched performance.

Arsenal are now two points clear of second placed City and while Pep Guardiola’s men remain favorites to win the title, the north Londoners have at least applied a little pressure on the champions.

City will go back into first place if they beat West Ham at home on Wednesday in the first of their two games in hand on Arsenal.

After 10 weeks at the top, Arsenal was knocked down to second place by City’s win at Fulham on Sunday.

Three successive draws, including two blown two-goal leads, and the calamitous loss at City have led Arsenal to be written off as title race chokers.

But Arteta insisted this week that the title was still winnable and his players responded to the Spaniard’s rallying cry.

Troubled Chelsea were ideal opponents for Arsenal to get back on track before a tricky trip to Newcastle on Sunday.

The Blues have now lost all six games since Frank Lampard returned as caretaker boss to replace the sacked Graham Potter.

Languishing in 12th place, Chelsea are on an nine-game winless run in all competitions and face the prospect of failing to finish in the top half of the table for the first time since 1996.

Judge Orders Pennsylvania District To Allow After-School Satan Club

0

Saucon Valley School District in Pennsylvania must now allow The Satanic Temple (TST) to use school facilities for its After-School Satan Club as courts continue to examine a civil rights lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania in late March, for changing its mind about approval for its club.

US District Judge John M. Gallagher wrote in a filing that the Saucon Valley School District violated the After School Satan Club’s free speech privileges when it rescinded its agreement to let the group meet on school grounds.

The club, which is sponsored by the Satanic Temple, had its official approval revoked earlier this year after its promotional flyers caused a stir in the Lehigh Valley community.

The national ACLU, the ACLU of Pennsylvania, and Dechert LLP subsequently sued the district on behalf of the Satanic Temple in March, the Hill reported.

Gallagher reasoned in his decision that “Here, although The Satanic Temple, Inc.’s objectors may challenge the sanctity of this controversially named organization, the sanctity of the First Amendment’s protections must prevail.”

“When confronted with a challenge to free speech, the government’s first instinct must be to forward expression rather than quash it. Particularly when the content is controversial or inconvenient. Nothing less is consistent with the expressed purpose of American government to secure the core, innate rights of its people,” Judge Gallagher wrote in the Monday ruling.

In Virginia, an After School Satan Club was also allowed to meet earlier this year following a similar controversy that made headlines.

Taliban Not Ready For $10bn Lithium Deal With China

0

The Taliban says they are not in a hurry to give China access to Afghanistan’s lithium reserves, despite an offer to pay for access to the rich deposits of the metal.

Afghanistan has abundant mineral riches, which also include copper, gold, oil, natural gas, uranium, bauxite and iron.

The US Department of Defense estimated in 2010 that it could be holding $1 trillion of untapped mineral deposits.

The country’s reserves of lithium are key to the global supply of a metal that is crucial to the production of batteries for electric vehicles.

Chinese company Gochin held talks with Afghan Mines and Petroleum Minister Shahabuddin Delawar last month and, according to the ministry, offered to invest $10 billion in mining the metal and employing 120,000 people for the operations.

But although the deal could fuel hopes for the revival of Afghanistan’s reeling economy, its Taliban rulers say they are in no rush.

Afghanistan and China are connected by land through the narrow, resource-rich Wakhan Corridor.

The reason Beijing is interested in Afghanistan’s lithium reserves is related also to their proximity, according to Muhibullah Sharif, a political science expert in Kabul

Exploring One Of World’s Oldest Surviving Churches, Saint Hripsime Church, Armenia

0

Saint Hripsime Church is one of the oldest surviving churches in the world, and it is located in the city of Vagharshapat, in the Armavir Province which is in the western part of the Republic of Armenia.

The current building that we can see, was completed and consecrated as a religious structure in the year 618 following the traditional tetraconch Armenian architectural style which is very common throughout the country.

The church was ordered by Komitas I Aghtsetsi and dedicated to one of Armenia’s first Christian martyrs, Saint Hripsime.

Before the completion of this stupendous building, there was another temple similar to the Temple of Garni, as well as a martyrium that was destroyed in 4 century by the last Persian imperial dynasty, the Sasanian Empire, also known as the Empire of Iranians.

The church is considered to have some great achievements in medieval architecture, and when seen from the top it is visible that it follows an almost cross-like shape, being 23 meters (75 feet) long and 18 meters (58 feet) wide.

Still, the domed building is accessed from the main entrance that is covered with an open narthex, also known as a gavit, and a bell tower, and it’s a very unique shape and appearance inspired architects to construct similar churches, thus naming this architectural style as the Hripsime-type.

Despite being one of a kind that deserves to be replicated, there is also a similar one located in neighboring Georgia which predates Saint Hripsime.

Nevertheless, due to the historic significance and importance, it has for the Armenian people, Saint Hripsime Church was dedicated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 together with additional nearby sites naming it as ‘Cathedral and Churches of Echmiatsin and the Archaeological Site of Zvartnots’.

Throughout the centuries the church was destroyed and rebuilt so many times, but it was dilapidated and abandoned by the early 17 century when some serious restorative work was carried out by Catholicos Philipos.

Throughout the years, the church was fortified with brick walls and towers on each corner of the wall, its foundations were strengthened, the roof dome repaired, the plaster within the church removed, the interior floor lowered, and the final reparation was done in 1987 when the bell tower was renovated.

In conclusion, influencing many other Armenian churches, the Saint Hripsime Church is one of the greatest historic buildings which is well known worldwide and many people would want to come and see it in person because this is the place that inspired many other churches to be constructed with the Hripsime-style medieval Armenian architecture.
