Nigeria’s Apex Bank Insists New naira Notes Still In Circulation

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says the redesigned naira notes were still circulating despite complaints about its scarcity.

CBN’s acting director, Corporate Communications Department, Isa Abdulmumin, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Sunday.

“The new and old currency notes have been circulating side by side,” said Mr Abdulmumin.

“The CBN has been taking delivery of a good quantity of the redesigned banknotes from the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company Limited.”

He said there were no plans to phase out the redesigned naira notes from circulation.

Mr Abdulmumin said that the apex bank was committed to supplying the “approved indent” for the smooth running of the economy.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the redesigned and old notes will continue to be accepted as legal tender.

“They will circulate side-by-side for transactions ahead of the Dec. 31 deadline, when the old N1,000, N500 and N200 banknotes will eventually be phased out,” he said.

The statement was a reaction to viral news on social media that the apex bank was contemplating the withdrawal of the recently redesigned N1,000, N500, and N200 currency banknotes from circulation.

Transmission Company Of Nigeria Shuts Down Supply To DISCOs Supplying Kaduna, Kano

0

Transmission Company Of Nigeria as market operator has shut down supply to the DISCOs supplying Kaduna & Kano.

As the state governors begin to navigate the murky waters of the transfer of power (bill 33) from the exclusive to concurrent legislative lists, the Nigeria Governors Forum will need to sit down in meetings with GENCOs & help them work through issues like:

• Cost of servicing their turbines/FX for spare parts
• Cost of LPFO & what will happen when NGMC deregulates the prices of Gas (Dec 2023)
• Increase in transmission pipes to supply more gas needed by GENCOs

• How deregulation of gas prices will impact the PPA signed with NBET

considering the current historical tariff shortfall from the multi-year tariff order (MYTO).

The NGF will need to incentivize the GENCOs to raise their generation capacity and lay out a plan that will:

• Phase out the historical tariff shortfall
• Privatize a section of TCN

as a means to ensure that the capacity load supplied to a decentralized grid (in the future) is taken fully, and not lost because either the grid keeps collapsing or NBET is unable to pay all their load in the final settlement statement (FSS).

*Considering that the North Central, North West, North-East has a gas supply shortage (and AKK was meant to solve that). And CNG trucks has a limit of 500km it can travel from South South to the North-West & North-East,

Increasing the number of internal transmission pipes for gas, and converting those associated gas from well-heads for gas trapped from future drilling sites in Bauchi (Kolmani 89) and Nasarawa (Ebenyi A) exploration Wells, is key.

US Accuses China of Harassing Philippine Vessels

0

The United States has accused China of intimidating and harassing Philippine vessels, asking Beijing to end “provocative” action in the South China Sea.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said this in a statement on Saturday, just two days before President Joe Biden is to host his counterpart, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, in Washington, DC.

The move comes after a recent near-collision between a Chinese vessel and a Philippine Coast Guard boat and the State Department warned that an attack on Philippine security forces or public vessels would trigger a US response.

Miller said the United States stands with their Philippine allies in upholding the rules-based international maritime order and reaffirms that an armed attack in the Pacific, on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft, including those of the Coast Guard, would invoke US mutual defense commitments.

The US was responding to a near-miss between Chinese and Philippine vessels off the Spratly Islands which has become the latest in a long string of maritime incidents between the two countries in the South China Sea

The Philippines on Friday accused China’s coast guard of “aggressive tactics” following an incident during a Philippine Coast Guard patrol close to the Philippines-held Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly archipelago, a flashpoint for previous altercations located 195km off its coast.

The Second Thomas Shoal is home to a small Philippine military contingent on board a rusty World War Two-era US ship that was intentionally grounded in 1999 to reinforce the Philippines’s territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Beijing claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, ignoring an international ruling that the assertion has no legal basis.

The Chinese foreign ministry said on Friday that the Philippine boats had “intruded” without China’s permission and called it a “premeditated and provocative action”.

But Manila responded, saying that routine patrols in our own waters can be neither premeditated nor provocative and insisted they will continue to conduct the patrols.
