0

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the postponement of the 2023 Population and Housing Census, earlier scheduled for May 3-7 2023, to a date to be determined by the incoming administration.

The President gave the approval after meeting with some members of the Federal Executive Council and the Chairman of the National Population Commission, Nasir Isa-Kwarra, and his team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, April 28, 2023.

Gov Ortom Calls For Postponement Of 2023 Census

This is contained in a press statement signed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, and released Saturday morning.

“In arriving at the decision to postpone the census,” the statement says, “the meeting reiterated the critical need for the conduct of a Population and Housing Census, 17 years after the last census, to collect up-to-date data that will drive the developmental goals of the country and improve the living standard of the Nigerian people.”

Mohammed quoted Buhari as saying that appreciable progress had been made in the preparation for and implementation of the now postponed census, adding that the President commended the methodology being put in place by the NPC to conduct accurate and reliable census.

“The President noted that with the completion of the Enumeration Area Demarcation of the country, conduct of first and second pre-tests, the recruitment and training of ad hoc workers, procurement of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and ICT infrastructures, appreciable progress has been made in the implementation of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

“He also commended the methodology being put in place by the Commission to conduct accurate and reliable Census, especially the massive deployment of technology that is capable of delivering world class Census and laying a sustainable basis for future censuses.”

The statement added, “The President further directed the Commission to continue with preparations for the conduct of the 2023 Population and Housing Census in order to sustain the gains already recorded and provide the basis for the incoming administration to consolidate these achievements.”

“The meeting was attended by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed; the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed; the Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha,” the statement concluded.

There were indications that the 2023 census would be postponed. There have been calls from some quarters for the postponement of the census for reasons ranging from inadequate preparation, lack of funds, lack of training of supervisors for the exercise, credibility doubts raised by its timing, to security concerns, among other things.

Labour Rejects FCT Refusal To Use Eagle Square

0

The Organised Labour in Nigeria has rejected a ‘stop used letter from the federal capital territory, FCT not to make use of the popular Eagle Square for the May one workers Day celebration.

The Abuja investment and property limited had written to the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, informing them of the latest development.

DSS Report Won’t Stop Solidarity Rally, Labour Tells Federal Govt.

At briefing in Abuja, TUC President, Festus Osifo on behalf of the Labour movement says workers will not accept the old parade ground alternative, they will rather occupy the streets of Abuja.

Osifo says the letter claims the May one workers Day will affect preparation for May 28 inauguration at the Eagle Square.

The Eagle has been used for Workers day May one celebration since 1999, except for the 2020 edition which was due to the covid-19 lockdown.

According to the Labour movement the action of the FCT authorities is more political than the excuse of the inauguration, due to the Labour movements affiliation to Labour Party.

Vietnam Holds 65 For Smuggling Drugs In Toothpaste Tubes

Vietnam has arrested 65 people for smuggling 50kg of hard drugs into the country, with some of the stash arriving in toothpaste tubes.

The arrests were made in Ho Chi Minh City, a very common drug smuggling route with its convenient location near the border of Cambodia.

The incident follows the arrest of four cabin crew members of Vietnam Airlines last month who were caught carrying toothpaste tubes containing ecstasy, ketamine, and cocaine in their carry-on bags. They claimed they were hired to transport toothpaste, unaware of the illegal substances in the tubes.

Further investigation revealed that half of the toothpaste tubes carried by the flight attendants contained drugs and that the flight attendants were allegedly hired by the same smuggling ring that used the 65 suspects recently arrested.

The suspects are accused of buying, selling, transporting, and storing narcotics.

It is believed that Vietnamese nationals living in France are frequently used by the same drug syndicate to bring drugs into Vietnam. On arrival in Vietnam, the drugs are allegedly taken to Dong Nai province bordering Saigon for distribution to numerous locations.

Authorities have reported more incidents over the past three months than over the past five years combined.

Possession, smuggling or manufacture of drugs such as heroin or methamphetamine can mean the death penalty in Vietnam. Although, with the value of the illegal drugs trade, this is not always enough of a deterrent.

Although the flight attendants involved in the incident a few months earlier are currently out on bail, it will be a worrying wait for them to know their fate. From an outside perspective, whether innocent or unaware of what they were carrying, transporting anything on an airline to Vietnam for someone else is just not worth it.

UAE Astronaut Sultan Al-Neyadi Ventures On Arab World’s First Spacewalk

0

UAE astronaut, Sultan Al-Neyadi, is making history on Friday as he becomes the first Arab astronaut to perform a spacewalk.

The spacewalk 408km above the earth’s surface makes him the highest flying Arab national in history.

Al-Neyadi, 41, ventured outside the International Space Station with astronaut Stephen Bowen for six-and-a-half hours.

Their mission involves replacing communication hardware installed on the exterior of the orbiting science laboratory.

Al-Neyadi is wearing what is known as an EMU spacesuit which is specially designed for spacewalks and is made with up to 16 layers of material.

He joins an elite group of just 259 astronauts to have stepped outside the ISS since its construction began in 1998.

Spaceport Cornwall Opens New Satellite Launch Centre For Research, Development.

0

Spaceport Cornwall has officially opened a new centre for businesses involved in satellite launch and development.

The Space Systems Operations Facility (SSOF) opening comes after the unsuccessful launch of satellites by a plane from the spaceport in January.

The SSOF will enable businesses to build and launch satellites from Cornwall, Spaceport Cornwall said.

It will also be a centre for research and development.

Matt Archer of the UK Space Agency said the Virgin Orbit satellite mission in January “was not the outcome that we wanted”.

But he said it “proves that they have the capability and the resilience and the ability to position themselves as a long-term spaceport”.

The January satellite mission, the first from UK soil, ended in failure after a rocket fuel filter became dislodged.

Virgin Orbit has since filed for bankruptcy.

Subsea Cable Set To Boom In Scotland

0

At last, after numerous false dawns, the renewable energy boom is about to generate manufacturing jobs at scale. Not one, but two big plants for making subsea power cables are in Scotland’s planning system.

Sumitomo Electric, part of a Japanese engineering giant with serious pedigree in this sector, has announced it will build one in the Highlands.

It is not yet saying precisely where, what the scale will be, how many jobs will be required, and how much it intends to invest. But all these numbers are likely to be large. Such plants only stack up if they’re on a very big scale.

And it seems that by no coincidence at all, the owner and operator of the Nigg industrial site in Easter Ross, Global Energy, has lodged a detailed plan for precisely that type of factory to be built on 15 hectares of farmland next to the existing fabrication yard.

That’s an area equivalent to 20 football pitches. The buildings would take up nearly half of that, and two of them will be up to 44m (144ft) high – the same height as the spire of St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Nigg lies within the boundaries of the green freeport designation, won in January by bidders for the Cromarty Firth and Inverness. It means tax breaks for investors, though the details of how the incentives will work are some months off.

Exploring Epupa Falls, Angola

Epupa Falls

The Epupa Falls, also known as Monte Negro Fall, are dramatic waterfalls with quite scenic views which are created by the Kunene River, located on the border between the Republic of Namibia and the Republic of Angola.

The canyon which creates this astonishing falls is less than a kilometer wide, where the river drops in series of waterfalls which are spread over 2 km (1 mi) with the highest drop measuring at 37 meters (121 feet).

Stitched Panorama

Due to the annual rains or droughts, the water level is always changing, however, the most interesting part is the name Epupa that comes from the Herero language which is part of the Bantu subfamily of the Niger–Congo group, meaning “foam” and according to some sources it can be found as “falling water”.

Surrounded with truly enchanting scenery, with palm and baobab trees lining the riverbed, Epupa Falls are one of the most visited attractions in Namibia, even though it is somewhat difficult to get there.

Stitched Panorama

Once there, the Ovahimba people together with the other tribes like Ovatjimba, Ovazemba and Ovatwe people will make every visitor to see how the nomad life is in the area, and with the growing tourism, there are other tribes who are migrating in the area.

Staying for a couple of days in the lodges or campgrounds in the vicinity of Epupa is definitely worth since plenty of activities will make every visitor’s experience greater with the guided tours of the villages, excursions to see the crocodiles living in the river, bird watching, rafting, and the most memorable would be the 4×4 vehicle adventure in the wilderness filled with many Baobab and Mopane trees.

Visible from either side of the border, Epupa Falls shall become certainly one of the most intriguing natural wonders from Namibia.

Head teachers in England are preparing to hold another vote on whether to strike over pay, funding, workload and wellbeing.

The National Association of Head Teachers union (NAHT), mainly representing primary heads, had already voted overwhelmingly to reject the government’s pay offer for teachers.

The union held a strike vote in January which supported taking action but did not reach the required 50% turnout.

The Department for Education says its pay offer was fair and reasonable.

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) are already on strike and it could continue into the next academic year.

Most state school teachers in England had a 5% pay rise in 2022, but the unions are asking for further increases and more funding to ensure pay rises do not come from schools existing budgets.

Talks between the government, NAHT and other education unions, which took place in March, resulted in a pay offer comprising a 4.3% rise next year, as well as a £1,000 one-off payment this year.

However, the pay offer was rejected by each of the unions and no further negotiations have been planned with the Department for Education saying the pay would now be decided by the independent pay review body, which would recommend pay rises for next year.

The NEU has since confirmed further strike days, including a walkout which took place on 27th April, planning a strike action on May 2nd, which will be the fifth national strike date this year.

The NASUWT said it would also re-ballot its members on strike action after failing to reach the turnout in its own ballot earlier in the year.

The other school leaders union, ASCL, said it would ballot members on strike action for the first time in its history.
