Pele: Portuguese Dictionary Adopts Name As Adjective

0

“Pele,” arguably the best footballer in history, is now also an adjective.

On Wednesday, the word “Pele” was added to the more than 167,000 words in the Michaelis Portuguese dictionary printed in Brazil.

For the world’s Portuguese speakers, “pele” can now be used to denote something or someone extraordinary — the sense in which it is already employed informally in Brazil.

“The expression already used to refer to someone who is the best at what they do has been eternalized on the pages of the dictionary!” The Pele Foundation said on social Media.

Under the new entry, the word is defined as “exceptional, incomparable, and unique” — qualities associated with “The King” of football who died in December at the age of 82.

The online version of the Michaelis also provides useful examples: “He is the Pele of basketball… She is the Pele of Brazilian drama.”

For now, the word has been included only in the Michaelis online version, though it will be added to printed dictionaries in future.

It is the result of a campaign by the Pele Foundation, the sports channel sportv and the Sao Paulo football club Santos where Pele played for much of his career.

Pele scored a world record 1,281 goals during his more than two decades playing with Santos (1956-74), the Brazilian national team, and the New York Cosmos (1975-77).

the director of special missions of the Nema, Onimode Bandele said the organization thinks there are more than 5,000 Nigerians (in Sudan) but for now we are talking about 3,500, including students, who will be transported in buses to Aswan in Egypt,”

According to him, the trip “will take some time because Khartoum is about 1,200 kilometres from Aswan.

Upon arrival in Aswan, the evacuated Nigerians will be flown to Abuja, the Nigerian capital by local airline Air Peace who volunteered to fly the Nigerians for free.

The 12 days of intense fighting between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo and the regular army of Abdel Fattah al-Burhane have thrown the country into chaos and sent foreigners scrambling to return home.

These two generals, who staged the coup in October 2021, are now engaged in a merciless war for power, which has resulted in several hundred deaths and a massive exodus.

Western powers have sent Special Forces and military aircraft to repatriate their nationals and diplomatic personnel.

Many other countries began evacuations by road and sea shortly after the 72-hour U.S.-brokered cease-fire went into effect Tuesday.

Since fighting between paramilitaries and the regular army began on April 15, more than 459 people have been killed and more than 4,000 wounded, according to the UN.

The revenue is from the illegal sale of 48 million barrels of crude oil export from 2014 till date.

The chairman of the committee, Mark Gbillah on Thursday, April 20 2023, announced that Malami will face the lawmakers on April 27.

Gbillah said the committee obtained reports that Malami received funds from outside the country through the whistle-blower policy but did not remit it to the federation account.

But appearing before the lawmakers, the Minister of Justice said that disclosing the details of the whistle-blowers as requested by the committee violates confidentiality.

With regard to details of accounts into which recoveries were paid, Malami stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) maintained these accounts, not the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation. Malami argued that his office is not a signatory, nor does it manage the accounts.

According to him, over $650 million have so far been recovered from different sources including late Head of State, General Sani Abacha; former Bayelsa State Governor, Diepreye Alamiesiegha, and former Delta State Governor, James Ibori

A 22-year-old lady, Josephine Adah, has bagged First Class in Civil Engineering from the University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, Enugu State.

During an interview, Adah, who hails from Cross River State, told DAILY POST her love for Mathematics as a child propelled her to study engineering, despite being considered a male-dominated discipline.

She said the financial challenges she faced in school (having lost her father at a tender age) didn’t discourage her from targeting a First Class at the prestigious university in Enugu.

She said: “I faced financial challenges where I could not afford some of my learning resources at school. However, I am grateful to senior colleagues and classmates that assisted me with books. I started some petty business and got awarded the National Merit Scholarship from NNPC/Total which assisted in easing the financial burden.

“I also experienced low access to electricity where I stayed at home. I am not usually productive at home compared to when I am at school. When we were sent home from school because of industrial actions by ASUU, my learnings were usually dificult because I couldn’t continue learning as much as I would love to with little or no access to electricity.”

She acknowledged that her academic success was partly due to her membership in professional bodies while at the University.

“When I got to school, I joined communities in school like the Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria (APWEN), Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and the Association of Catholic Engineering Students (ACES). These communities were the foundation of my growth. They groomed, mentored and taught first-year students how to build character, capacity, the resilience to excel in the tertiary institution.

“As I advanced in my year of study, I joined AIESEC, Student Personal Development Hub (SPDH) and the UNN Scholars Accelerators to build leadership skills and take up civic engagement responsibilities,” she stated.

Speaking about her next big plans, Adah said: “I don’t have a big plan. I consistently take baby steps. I plan to get an entry-level position. I am interested in the Energy, Tech (Artificial Intelligence Research), Construction and Management Consulting industries.

“I am also working towards graduate studies in the interception between Civil Engineering (Infrastructure and Energy) with Artificial Intelligence. I am also committed to supporting youth development organizations to advance quality education, Clean Energy and Sustainable cities.”

She added: “The news (of the first class result) came with a lot of gratitude rather than surprise. Gratitude, because, for me, it was a breaking forth – being the first person in the family with a First Class and studying Engineering. The news was appreciated to encourage females in STEM courses to believe that they can stand out anywhere they find themselves”.

“I could also perceive the joy and excitement from family, mentors, and friends that contributed to helping me achieve the goal while they sent congratulatory messages. The win was a win for the community.” she added.
