Tottenham fire interim coach after Newcastle thrashing

0

Tottenham fired interim manager Christian Stellini on Monday after chairman Daniel Levy branded Sunday’s 6-1 defeat at Newcastle “wholly unacceptable”.

Stellini, who was only put in charge last month after his former boss Antonio Conte left the club, would be replaced by Ryan Mason with immediate effect.

Conte’s long-term assistant won only one of his four games in charge, dealing what appears a fatal blow to spurs’ chances of champion’s league football next season.

Tottenham still sit fifth in the premier league but are six points adrift of the top four and have played at least one game more than the sides directly above them.

Mason, who also took charge towards the end of the 2020/21 season, will be in the dugout for Thursday’s clash at home to Manchester united.

After finishing fourth under Conte last season, hopes were high that Tottenham could go even better this campaign as the former Chelsea boss was armed with over £100 million ($124 million) of new signings.

But after just one defeat in their opening 10 league games, spurs have lost 10 of their last 22.

24th Edition Of Art Toronto Returns In October

0

By the time Art Toronto comes around in late October, art fair hoppers will have travelled throughout Europe and will be planning their Miami itineraries. One might ask why a Canadian stop is needed in an already jam-packed art fair schedule?

For one, Art Toronto is home to over 100 galleries, ranging from the best in Canada to some of the hottest names in the international market. Galleries like Patel Brown (Toronto), Cooper Cole (Toronto), Daniel Faria (Toronto), Night Gallery (Los Angeles), Catriona Jeffries (Vancouver), Galerie Hugues Charbonneau (Montreal), Royale Projects (Los Angeles), Fazakas Gallery (Vancouver), Pangée (Montreal), and Galerie Pici (Seoul), along with many others, are participating in Art Toronto this year, and will test collectors’ appetite for up-and-coming talent.

Art Toronto runs October 26–29 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre located in the heart of downtown.

This year, legendary curator Kitty Scott has joined the Art Toronto team and will curate the fair’s 2,000-square-foot “Focus” exhibition, which will present new, ambitious artworks by artists shown at the fair alongside important historical work. Staying true to the art-fair model, all works featured in “Focus” will be for sale. Scott’s decades-long career with Canada’s leading art institutions makes her one of the most respected curators in Canada. A champion of Canadian artists, Scott curated the Canadian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2017, featuring an installation by Geoffrey Farmer, and co-curated the Liverpool Biennial in 2018.

In keeping with the goal of acting as a springboard for young talent, Art Toronto is launching Discover, a new section dedicated to exhibitions of work by emerging artists. Presented by principal partner RBC, Discover aims to create opportunities for galleries to showcase the dynamic practices of up-and-coming artists and to introduce them to new audiences.

Manchester City v Arsenal: Pep Guardiola & Mikel Arteta Say Game Is Not Premier League Decider

0

Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta both say the top-of-the-table game between Manchester City and Arsenal will not decide the Premier League title race.

League leaders Arsenal are five points above Pep Guardiola’s side before Wednesday’s match at Etihad Stadium.

However, second-placed City have two games in hand on the Gunners who have drawn three matches in succession.

“It is really important, but not decisive because there are many games to play,” City boss Guardiola said.

The two Spaniards worked together at City before Arteta left to become Arsenal manager in 2019, but Guardiola says “nothing changes” their relationship when their sides face each other.

“We see each other less and we speak less but our relationship is always happy,” he said.

The Gunners have suffered defeats by City in both the league and FA Cup already this season and Arteta expects another “difficult” game.

Arsenal, who last won the Premier League in 2004, drew 3-3 against bottom placed Southampton  on Friday, after squandering two-goal leads against both West Ham and Liverpool.

“If we win tomorrow we have not won the league. It will shift probably the percentage, but five games in this league is very tricky still,” he said.

“We knew we had to go to Etihad, it will be difficult, but will it decide the season? No,” Arteta added.

“The belief is there, I look at how the players reacted after Southampton, they defend each other in every moment. We really want it and we are again going to show it tomorrow night.”

Guardiola said his former assistant had helped take the Gunners to “a different level”.

“Arsenal have always had incredible details about keeping the ball, the players they select for the club have big quality and skills,” he said.

“Mikel [Arteta] has brought them to a different level; they are so competitive and aggressive.”

Arteta confirmed midfielder Granit Xhaka, who missed the Southampton game with illness, is a doubt for the fixture, while centre-back William Saliba has shown “no real improvement” in his recovery from the injury he sustained in the Europa League penalty shootout defeat to Sporting Lisbon in March.

Russians And Belarusians Have Signed Declarations To Compete Says Wimbledon

0

Several Russian and Belarusian players have already signed personal declarations that will clear them to compete as neutrals at this year’s Wimbledon championships, the All England Club said on Tuesday.

Wimbledon announced last month that it had lifted its ban which prevented athletes from the two countries playing last year following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Speaking at the club’s pre-tournament Spring media conference, Club chairman Ian Hewitt said the U-turn had been the hardest decision of his four years in the job.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision,” he told reporters. “I think our statement on March 31 set out the position as clearly as we could, namely that there were a combination of factors and it was a combination of factors and developments since last year which led to our decision.”

Wimbledon and the other British grasscourt tournaments stood alone in barring Russian and Belarusian players such as former world number ones Daniil Medvedev and Victoria Azarenka last year.

The decision resulted in ranking points being stripped from the events and the Lawn Tennis Association being hit with huge fines by the ATP and WTA.

To compete this year, Russian and Belarusian players must agree to compete as neutrals, not to make statements supporting the war or the regimes involved and not to receive funding from either nation or state-supported businesses.

“The development of the wording of the declarations is obviously based on government guidance, working with the Tours, the ITF and our partners at the LTA,” All England Club CEO Sally Bolton said on Tuesday.

“As soon as we made the announcement players were able to sign the declarations and they are able to right up until the entry deadline. I won’t share the details of who but a number of players have already signed.

“We listened to the feedback from athletes from last year and that was that they wanted the choice to be able to sign the declaration. They fully understand what they are signing up to.”

U-TURN CRITICISED

Wimbledon’s U-turn attracted some criticism with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba calling it “immoral”.

Bolton said she had personally spoken to Ukrainian players at the time of the announcement and that the majority had understood the situation and the club’s decision.

Hewitt reemphasised Wimbledon’s “condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine”, which Moscow calls a special militry operation, and said that the tournament would continue to support players and refugees from the country.

Wimbledon will meet all of the accommodation costs of Ukraine players during the tournament and all of the build-up events in the British grasscourt season, while one pound will be donated to Ukraine relief efforts for every ticket sold — amounting to around 500,000 pounds ($621,150.00).

Other announcements included a continuation of play on the middle Sunday, which came into effect last year, and the extension of a trial allowing players to receive coaching from their entourages in the stands.

An announcement on prize money will be made in June.

Electricity Project: North Sea Power Line To Connect Wind Farms To UK

0

A huge electricity cable project in the North Sea could provide green power to 1.8 million UK homes in plans announced by the UK and Dutch governments.

It would connect to offshore wind farms and transfer electricity between the two countries.

European nations are under pressure to fulfil climate promises to end reliance on fossil fuels and to improve energy security.

The deal was announced on Monday at an energy summit in Ostend, Belgium.

The power line, called LionLink, is being developed by the National Grid and Dutch electricity network TenneT and could be running by the early 2030s.

The government claims LionLink will carry 1.8GW of electricity, giving it the largest capacity of any cross-border electricity line in the world.

An existing cross-border connection between Germany and Denmark carries 0.4GW.

“We are bolstering our energy security and sending a strong signal to Putin’s Russia that the days of his dominance over global power markets are well and truly over,” said UK Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year caused energy prices to skyrocket as it disrupted gas and oil supplies from Russia to Europe.

“We are facing a climate crisis at the same time some of our ecosystems are in decline, and offshore wind is an integral part of both climate action and safeguarding our energy security,” the leaders of Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Ireland, Norway and the UK wrote in news website Politico about the Ostend summit, which aims to increase wind power in the North Sea.

The UK government has made legally binding commitments to become net zero by 2050 – meaning the UK should stop adding warming greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

Experts says that will require a huge shift away from fossil fuels like oil and gas to greener sources of energy like wind and solar power.

EPL: Chelsea In Talks With Pochettino

0

Chelsea are reportedly increasingly likely to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as the club’s next head coach.

Upon sacking Graham Potter at the beginning of April, the Blues hierarchy made the decision to bring in former boss and club legend Frank Lampard on a caretaker basis.

Had Lampard led Chelsea to the Champions League final, the Englishman would have been in contention to remain at Stamford Bridge in the long term, but the 4-0 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals meant that any possibility of a permanent second stint was ruled out.

As a result, it appeared likely that either Julian Nagelsmann or Luis Enrique would eventually be handed the reins, yet both candidates were out of the race come last Friday.

At the same time, Pochettino became the clear favourite to return to the Premier League having previously managed fellow London club Tottenham Hotspur.

Although it has been widely reported that Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is also under consideration, Pochettino is said to have made a positive impression on Todd Boehly and fellow club officials.

There is now every expectation that the Argentine will be soon be confirmed as the new head coach.

While it is stated that discussions and negotiations are far from complete, it is suggested that an unforeseen change of heart from either party would prevent a deal from being finalised.

With Chelsea having just seven Premier League fixtures left and with little but Europa Conference League qualification to play for, an announcement may be made before the end of the season.

Pochettino has spent this season out of work having been relieved of his duties at Paris Saint-Germain last year, a consequence of their last-16 exit from the Champions League.

Nevertheless, the 51-year-old remains highly regarded in Europe, helped by his stint at Spurs where the club became Premier League title challengers and reached a Champions League final.

In recent days, it has also been claimed that a number of Chelsea players would support the appointment, arguably a key factor when it comes to Boehly and co making their final choice.

Should Pochettino arrive in West London, he will be tasked with overseeing a much-changed squad, a result of Chelsea needing to facilitate a wide array of sales to comply with FFP.

Alec Baldwin resumed the filming of Rust

0

Hollywood star Alec Baldwin on Monday says he’s ‘grateful’ for support as Rust filming continues at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana, nearly a year and half after Halyna Hutchins was shot dead on set.

The 65 year old actor, who has regained his role as main character in the Western, posted a photo on instagram as he wrote: “We filmed SUPERCELL in Billings. Now outside of Bozeman to complete RUST. Montana is stunning”.

Baldwin’s update went on: “I’m grateful for all of the support I have received here.”

On 21 October 2021, ‘Rust’ shooting was suspended  after Hutchens was fatally wounded on set when a prop gun Baldwin was holding went off during a rehearsal.

Actor Alec Baldwin Settles Lawsuit Over Shooting Incident On Film Set

The actor, Alec Baldwin, says the gun went off accidentally and he did not pull the trigger.

All criminal charges against the actor were dropped earlier this month of April 2023, however the civil lawsuit brought against Baldwin by Hutchins’ family is still going ahead.

Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, is now an executive producer on the film, as well as on a documentary about his late cinematographer wife.

Director Joel Souza, who was also injured in the shooting, has returned to lead the film.

He said in a statement after filming resumed: “Though bittersweet, I am grateful that a brilliant and dedicated new production team is joining former cast and crew to complete what Halyna and I started.”

Production is expected to complete by the end of May, while Armourer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who was responsible for weapons and ammunition for the production, is facing an involuntary manslaughter charge.

Incredible Opportunity Awaits Arsenal At Man City-Arteta

0

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has urged his Premier League leaders to make the most of an “incredible opportunity” when they travel to nearest challengers Manchester City on Wednesday.

The Gunners are five points clear of second-placed City but have played two games more than the reigning champions.

Anything other than a first away win against City since 2015 would leave the destiny of the title in Pep Guardiola’s side’s hands.

Arsenal have drawn their last three league games, raising doubts over whether a youthful side can deliver the North London club’s first Premier League crown in 19 years.

But Arteta, having seen Arsenal record several notable away wins this season, told a pre-match news conference on Tuesday: “It is going to be a tough night and challenge, yes, but the opportunity is incredible for us.

“We knew from the beginning — you want to win a Premier League, you have to go to Spurs and you have to beat them, you have to go to Chelsea and you have to beat them.

“This is what we have been doing, that is why we are here and now we have to go to City and we have to beat them — you want to be champion, you have to win these matches, it is as simple as that.”

Arsenal will again be without William Saliba as the France defender has shown “no improvement” in recovering from a back injury, while Arteta also revealed Granit Xhaka is doubtful for the match at the Etihad.

The Switzerland captain missed Friday’s frantic 3-3 draw with strugglers Southampton through illness and has yet to return to training.

– Massive game –

Arteta, who won two league titles as an assistant to Guardiola at City, played down suggestions he would need a radical rethink in tactics.

The former Gunners midfielder said it was important the team was able to adapt to changing situations within a match.

“That’s what we do every game in certain areas,” he said. “Are you talking in ball possession, out of possession, in transition, at restarts, on set pieces, emotional state?

“You have to shift it all the time. Every opponent demands and questions different things of you and gives you different opportunities.

“There’s no difference with that team (City), it’s just obviously the quality of the opponent is as good as it gets anywhere in the world.”

Arteta added he had little time for the idea that Wednesday’s match was a ‘winner-takes-all’ contest in the title race.

“If we win tomorrow night we haven’t won, for sure,” the 41-year-old Spaniard said.

“It would shift the percentage a little bit but five games in this league with the games we still have to play, it’s very tricky.

“We knew from the beginning that City was the team to beat with Liverpool because of what those teams have done in the past few years.

“We wanted to close that gap as much as we could and we’re toe-to-toe with them.

“We know it is going to be a massive game. Is it going to define the season? The answer is no.”

Flydubai Aircraft Lands Safely In Dubai After Bird Strike

1

Flydubai flight FZ 576 has landed safely in Dubai past midnight on Tuesday after experiencing a bird strike during takeoff from Kathmandu.

“Our experienced flight crew followed standard operating procedure and continued the onward journey after determining that the engine was within normal operating parameters.

The aircraft landed normally in Dubai and further inspection will be conducted,” a flydubai spokesman said in a statement posted on Twitter through the Dubai Media Office.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority. We apologize for any inconvenience caused to our passengers’ travel schedule,” the statement added.

But Nepal’s civil aviation authority disputed whether the flydubai plane had been hit by a bird strike in Nepali airspace, calling the UAE carrier’s account of the incident “misleading.”

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) said on Twitter on Tuesday that the airline’s country manager and airport manager had been barred from entering Katmandu airport for spreading “misleading” news about a bird strike.

Flydubai said it would respond shortly to a request for comment on the tweet. The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“How did the company say it was a case of bird strike. The pilot has not reported that and there is no evidence of it so far. There is no proof or basis for this,” Jagannath Niroula, a CAAN spokesperson, said.

Niroula earlier said an engine caught fire on the flydubai Boeing 737-800 plane with 167 passengers on board, shortly after takeoff from Katmandu and the fire had been brought under control.

“Flydubai flight number 576, (Boeing 737-800) Katmandu to Dubai flight is normal now and proceeding to her destination Dubai as per the flight plan,” the Nepali civil aviation authority said in an earlier tweet.

Exploring San Jeronimo Fort In Panama

0

San Jerónimo Fort is a historic fortification that is located in the port city of Portobelo, which is part of the Colón Province, right on the Caribbean coast of the Republic of Panama.

Built in the eastern part of the bay with the purpose of protecting the city which had big significance during colonial times, the fortification was actually built in several stages that were spread between 1596 and 1779.

As the Spanish wanted to protect the transportation of goods from South America to Spain, and with the frequent pirate attacks, the San Jerónimo Fortress was the perfect spot that could offer it at that time.

As a matter in fact, nowadays some 16 cannons can be seen which face the mouth of the bay, and some of them are exactly where the Spanish troops left them.

From historic notes, it is known that the original fort was completed in 1596, however, substantial portions were rebuilt and new additions were added throughout the years, up until 1779.

That is why the entire structure is considered to be an important example of historic architecture with diverse European influences, constructed as part of an extensive defensive system in the Spanish Caribbean.

Still, when Panama gained its independence from Spain in 1821, the fortress instantly became an important part of the country’s heritage.

Even though most some of the historic structures within the fort don’t exist anymore, there are still the remains of the officers’ quarters, barracks, guardroom and huge observation terrace over the water which are bringing the visitors much closer to the historic times when the Spanish Empire was at its peak.

Definitely being one of the greatest landmarks from Portobelo, San Jerónimo Fort is one of the most complete accessible fortifications that can be visited, not in the city, but the country as well.
