Why We Can’t evacuate Students in Sudan Now – Nigerian Govt

Onyema noted that Nigerian students and others stranded in the war-racked nation have urgent “needs our help.”

He said he is compelled to help because Nigeria cannot afford to lose her citizens in that country, adding that it would be his own commitment to making sure that the stranded Nigerians in the war-torn country are safe.

“Again, Air Peace is willing to evacuate Nigerians stranded in Sudan free of charge if the government can get them to a safe and secure airport in any of the neighbouring countries bordering Sudan. Everything must not be left to the government and the government alone.

It added, “We are very ready to do it immediately. No time wasting. Any action that would promote national pride, national cohesion, peace and unity, we are for it.

“Again, we have no apologies for believing in our nation and loving the nation despite certain national challenges. If they are moved to Kenya or Uganda or any other country, we will move in to get them out. Some parents have started calling on us to help. We are ready to do this again and again,” he said.

If they are moved to Kenya or Uganda or any other country, we will move in to get them out. Some parents have started calling on us to help. We are ready to do this again and again,” he said.

In 2019, Air Peace deployed flights to evacuate Nigerians in South Africa when the xenophobic attack against Africans living in that country threatened the lives of Nigerians.

The Federal Government said preparations is underway to evacuate about 5,500 stranded Nigerians out of Sudan through the Egyptian town of Luxor.

It was gathered that the Federal Government was seeking Egypt’s support so that the stranded Nigerians could be moved to Luxor.

The Director of Special Duties of the National Emergency Management Agency, who doubles as Chairman of NEMA’s Committee for the Evacuation of the Stranded Nigerians from Sudan, Dr Onimode Bandele, said the Federal government was meeting with government officials in Egypt on how to move Nigerians out of Sudan through Egypt.

Bandele said this as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, said the government had concluded arrangements to evacuate 5,500 Nigerians in Sudan by road.

According to him, Nigeria, for security reasons, will get authorisation from the Sudanese government before the evacuation.

Monarch Tells Envoy, Repatriated Benin Artefacts’ Custody Settled

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, says custody of the repatriated Benin artefacts has been settled by the Federal Government, stressing that there is no more controversy over the issue.

The Oba made the clarification at his palace on Friday during a meeting with the Ambassador of The Netherlands to Nigeria, Wouter Plomp, saying the Federal Government rightly recognised the significance of having the repatriated artefacts in the custody of the Oba of Benin.

Recall that the Federal Government had in Notice No. 25 in the official Gazette No. 57, Volume 110 at pages A245-247, dated March 23, 2023 laid to rest, the raging tussle between the Oba and the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on who to be the custodian of the repatriated artefacts.

Reacting to comments by the Ambassador of The Netherlands on the future of repatriated Benin bronzes, Oba Ewuare II said the future of the Benin bronzes and artefacts were in the gazette.

The Oba said, “The ownership, custody, and management of the artefacts are clearly stated, which is vested in the Oba as an institution. That is the law.

“The ongoing plans for the construction of Benin Royal Museum Project, at the instance of the Nigerian government, is on course. It is a Federal Government project and we have been on it for some time now.”

Addressing the Benin throne earlier, the Ambassador hailed Oba Ewuare II for redirecting the course of history.

He pledged his country’s support in strengthening Nigeria in the area of employment and cultural diplomacy.

“We are very interested in all the history of the Benin bronzes, some of which are still in the Netherlands. Contacts are underway between Netherlands Commission for monuments and the Commission for monuments of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

‘There has been meetings between the commissions about the future of the Benin Bronzes,” Plomp added.

International and local artists paint giant, colourful murals on the exterior of a 15-storey building in Ivory Coast’s commercial capital called “the Pyramid,” an architectural gem that fell into disuse 20 years ago.

A symbol of Ivorian prosperity in the 1970s and one of the first towers built in the central business district of Plateau in Abidjan, this futuristic pyramid-shaped building was neglected for years. The project “Pyramid 2023, tomorrow is already born” aims to give it a second life.

Through this initiative, Ivorian artistic director Lemon Otto renovates external facades of older building such as Pyramid, which was completed in 1973 under the direction of the Italian architect Rinaldo Olivieri.

“This project allows us to have a look at Abidjan, which is not always well known, to highlight Ivorian creativity, to show that Ivory Coast is … a land of inspiration and of entrepreneurship in the cultural and creative industries,” said Françoise Remarck, Ivorian minister of culture, who aims to make Abidjan West Africa’s artistic and cultural hub.

The renovation must respect the original architecture of the building since the current structure is in good condition, added the minister of construction and urbanism, Bruno Nabagne Kone.

Many buildings in the business district are internationally known and could teach Ivorians about their own urban history, architects say.

“Ivorians should learn to look at the architectural heritage that surrounds them,” said architect Issa Diabate.

CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United Lose At Home To Two Mayele’s Second-Half Strikes

Late in the second half, Mayele scored twice, giving the Tanzanian squad what appears to be one leg into the next round.

Piston Mayele’s brace made the difference as Young Africans from Tanzania defeated hosts Rivers United 2-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Sunday evening during the first leg of the CAF confederations cup quarter-final game.

After a first-half barren draw, Mayele broke the deadlock in the 74th minute before completing his brace seven minutes later to give the Tanzanians an enormous advantage going into the second leg in Dar es Salaam.

Having conceded two goals at home, Rivers United would need to score three goals without a reply in Dar es Salaam next weekend to qualify for the next round.

Nine minutes into the game, Rivers United had the first attempt on goal with Ebube Duru’s cross, wrongly hit by Nwagua Nyima in the opponent’s box.

Yanga FC had their first attempt at goal through a header in the 16th minute from Yannick Litombo, which went past goalkeeper Sochima Victor, but Ukeme Williams cleared the goal-bound chance to a corner. Sochima then saved the attempt thereafter from Stephane Aziz.

Four minutes later, goalkeeper Djigui Diarra’s corner clearance from Ekeocha Lawrence met Kazie Enyinnaya, whose rebound shot was blocked.

The visitors then got another chance to break the deadlock when Fiston Mayele’s splitting pass was received by Aziz Ki, who fired towards the goal but Sochima stretched to save the ball in the 27th minute.

The goalkeeper then saved Mudathiri Abasi’s header in the 43rd minute as both sides played a barren draw in the first half at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.

But the second half had a distinct atmosphere, especially from the visitors who pressured the defence area of the Pride of Port Harcourt.

Nwagua’s header went off target, but Mayele’s header towards Sochima was blocked for a corner in the 71st minute.

Soon after missing the attempt, Mayele broke the deadlock in the 74th minute after receiving a pass from captain Bakari Mwamnyeto, who dribbled past Kazie Enyinnaya before slotting the ball to Sochima’s far left corner. After a VAR check, the goal stood as the Tanzanian nicked a vital away goal.

The striker then doubled the lead in the 81st minute from a counter and calmly slotted the ball past Sochima to give the visitors a second goal and give Rivers United a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Elsewhere, Sunshine Stars bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to Abia Warriors with a lone-goal win over Lobi Stars at the Akure Township Stadium.

David Onovo scored the only goal of the encounter via a finish to a 23rd-minute corner kick.

Meanwhile, a 12th-minute goal from Nenrot Silas made the difference during the Northern derby between Plateau United and Nasarawa United at the New Jos Stadium.

In the game that was earlier played, Remo Stars picked a vital away point in Aba against Enyimba in a game that ended 1-1.

The Sky Blue Stars having dropped points against Bendel Insurance at home last Sunday did hold Enyimba who failed to continue their winning streaks at home.

Philip Odubia scored for the visitors in the 43rd minute before a last-minute strike restored parity for the Elephants.

Manchester United will face rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final after Solly March’s spot-kick miss saw Brighton suffer semi-final shoot-out heartache.

Three days on from their Europa League quarter-final exit to Sevilla, Erik ten Hag’s side found themselves in the familiar position of needing to bounce back from a humiliating loss.

Brighton made United sweat as the south coast club sought to reach just their second FA Cup final, with the semi-final ending 0-0 after 120 minutes at Wembley.

The first 12 penalties of the shoot-out found the net before Albion favourite March blazed over, allowing Victor Lindelof to win it 7-6 and set-up a Wembley return against City.

Roberto De Zerbi’s exciting side had been bookmakers’ favourites in their third FA Cup semi-final appearance and began in the manner onlookers have become accustomed to.

Alexis Mac Allister’s early free-kick was saved by David De Gea, with the under-fire United goalkeeper brilliantly tipping over a Julio Enciso attempt after half-time.

United settled and the match went to extra-time, which also ended goalless meaning the semi-final went to spot-kicks under the arch.

March’s miss was the key moment, with Lindelof striking brilliantly in sudden death as the Carabao Cup winners progressed to a record-equalling 21st FA Cup final.
