Fire Guts UNIBEN Female Hostel

0

A female postgraduate hostel has been razed by fire in the University of Benin, Ekenwan Road Campus, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The incident, which started at about 1:00 pm, was attributed to a power surge in one of the rooms upstairs and then spread to others on the same floor, according to sources at the scene.

It was gathered that this disrupted the entire school activities, especially the students who were in their various classes taking lectures.

All the rooms upstairs in the one-storey building were completely burnt wiith nothing to salvage except the rooms downstairs.

However, the inferno was successfully extinguished by a combined team of firefighters which include the Federal Fire Service, the Edo State Fire Service, and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Fire Service, all in Benin City.

Students and officials could still be seen evacuating the belongings of the students from the rooms downstairs, which were not affected, for fear of the unknown with a mixed crowd of students – those affected and those unaffected – watching from a safe distance. No life was lost.

Gusau-Led Nff Executive Committee Charges National Team For Excellence In Forthcoming Competitions

The NFF board resolved key resolutions to the national issue surrounding the football ecosystem

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) on Monday, 17 April held an executive meeting at the NFF Secretariat in Abuja to discuss pressing issues surrounding the football system of the country and make several resolutions.

Several NFF Executive Committee members, including the President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, Aisha Falode, and other major football stakeholders attended the meeting, where the state of the Nigerian League, the Super Eagles’ disappointing performances, the Super Falcons’ World Cup preparation, and other urgent issues were discussed.

Following the meeting, the board adopted significant decisions regarding the national problem involving the football ecosystem.

It called for the immediate formation of boards for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the Nigeria National League (NNL), the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL), and the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO) within the next month in order to revamp the domestic game.

They made this decision to promote best practices in the football industry in line with the statutes.

Meanwhile, the Board expressed their satisfaction with the recent winning streak of the senior women’s national team. The Falcons have won their last three friendly games as they prepare for the World Cup scheduled to start in July in New Zealand and Australia.

However, the board encouraged the technical crew to work even harder to give confidence to the players as they poised to compete with top teams at the World Cup. They further promised that the board would do more to prepare the team for the FIFA Women’s World Cup competition coming up in Australia and New Zealand this summer.

After shoddy performances at the just concluded U-20 competition in Egypt, the Board urged the Flying Eagles crew and players to see it as a national duty to win the FIFA U20 World Cup for Nigeria in Argentina between May 20 and June 11.

They also charged the U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, to fly the country’s flag high during the Africa Championship from 29 April to19 May and ensure qualification for the forthcoming World Cup in November.

The issue of agents and football merchants around the various national teams was also addressed by the NFF Board. They pledged to enforce harsh consequences on anyone caught supporting these criminals’ actions, regardless of their standing or background and expressed concern about the crippling impact of these malicious characters.

The Board endorsed the NFF President’s statement that the Federation won’t beg any player to wear the nation’s colours. Any player who is not motivated for one reason or another to represent Nigeria should state this at the point of invitation. Any perceived lackadaisical attitude by any player wearing Nigeria’s colours at the international level will no longer be acceptable.

The Board assured Nigerians at home and abroad that they remain focused and committed to developing Nigerian football from the grassroots. The Board also aims to provide adequate support and encouragement to youth teams to produce players for the senior teams and to create a conducive environment for the growth of the football economy that will contribute to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Ahmadu Fintiri as the winner of the Adamawa State governorship election.

The Returning Officer, Muhammed Melee, declared incumbent Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party winner on Tuesday after polling 430,861 votes to defeat his major counterpart Aisha Binani of the All Progressives Congress who polled 398,788.

REC Declares Binani Winner Of Adamawa State Governorship Polls

INEC reopened the collation centre for the supplementary election results on Tuesday. The supplementary election held in the state on Saturday, April 15, after the election of March 18 was declared inconclusive by INEC, following certain irregularities.

The collation exercise in the state was stopped on Sunday after the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Ari, declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Binani, the winner of the election, which led the commission on Monday to ask Hudu to stay away from the office.

In his acceptance speech after being declared winner, the governor-elect said he was “humbled the more.”

While congratulating his co-contenders for their struggle in the governorship race, Fintiri condemned the action of Hudu who had earlier declared Binani as the winner of the election.

While saying the action of the REC “fell below expectation,” he thanked the people of Adamawa “for voting for continuity.”

Following the political drama in the state, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, ordered that the Commissioner of Police on election duty, Mohammed Barde, be withdrawn from the state with immediate effect.

The IGP also ordered that the CP in charge of Gombe State, Etim Equa, should immediately proceed to Adamawa state for election security of the keenly contested supplementary governorship poll.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made the revelation while addressing pressmen on Tuesday in Abuja, adding that the IG was committed to a free and fair electoral process.

Part of the development in the day is also the fact that a Federal High Court, Abuja, refused to hear an ex-parte motion filed by Binani on the elections. The court temporarily declined to hear the motion over issue bordering on jurisdiction.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, instead, ordered the APC candidate’s counsel, Mohammed Sheriff, to address the court on the issue of jurisdiction before hearing the substantive motion.

Upon resumed hearing on the matter, Afeez Matomi announced appearance for Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, the third respondent in the suit, shortly after the sheriff mentioned his name.

Justice Ekwo then asked Matomi if he had been served.

The lawyer told the court that though they were yet to be served, they had filed a motion to counter part of Binani’s prayers.

He said they got the hint about the ex-parte motion through social media, hence, they decided to file a motion.

But the judge, who declined to listen to Fintiri’s lawyer, said it was imperative for counsel to go by what the law said.

Justice Ekwo, who ordered Sheriff to address him on whether the court had the jurisdiction to hear the matter, held that the application would be taken together with the issue of jurisdiction on the next adjourned date.

He consequently adjourned the matter until April 26 for hearing of the motion and an address on jurisdiction.

According to the invoices given to some new ABSU students that went viral yesterday, it was seen that undergraduates in some departments had their fees jump from N122,000 Naira to N500,000.

Rabiu, who is also a lecturer at the Bayero University, Kano, disclosed this penultimate Monday at the Faculty Board Room while defending his Ph.D. thesis, titled, “Preparation and Characterization of Mixed Iron Oxides Nanocomposites for Removal of Mordant Dye, Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from Aqueous Solution”.

His findings show that some effects of the toxins on humans are skin and respiratory problems, cancer, and killing of aqua life.

The student researcher stated that the benefit of his research work was to eradicate toxins from coming in contact with humans in order to avoid problems associated with them.

He also said that his research came to light as a result of a protest from Challawa, a community in Kano.

Rabiu recommended that proper treatments of industrial effluents before their disposal in the environment should be employed.

He also proposed that the present studies should be extended to a pilot scale for industrial application.

The researcher advised that the absorption capacities of different absorbents should be investigated for the removal of other pollutants in both aqueous and real tannery effluents.

In a related development, Lakunle Olarewaju, who is also a Ph.D student at the Department of Industrial Chemistry has recommended that there should be more interactions between the town and the gown, stating that the “town creates the problem and the gown provides solutions for the town”.

Olarewaju also implored the government to create a ministry that would be charged with the responsibilities of connecting the town with the gown.

He specifically advised the Ministries of Environment at state and federal levels to always be on their toes by discharging their duties as at when due and to the fullest.

Chioma Onyekwere Breaks African Discus Record In Ramona!

0

Competing at the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona, Chioma Onyekwere went out to a massive Personal Best (PB) of 64.96m in the women’s Discus Throw at Oklahoma Throws Series, breaking the African Record in the process!

She broke what is now the previous record set in 2007 by Elizna Naudé by 9cm and bettered the World Championship qualification standard.

Her season shows she is on a good trajectory, having opened up about two weeks ago with 55.88m and then improving to 60.79m last weekend. Her previous PB also stood at 63.30m, meaning that she bettered that by over one and a half metres.

With some amazing performances from some of the Nigerian superstars, the 2023 athletics season is already looking promising.

Chioma Onyekwere put on an incredible display at the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona, California, winning the women’s discus throw with a huge personal best (PB) of 64.96 metres.

Breaking records

Along with winning the competition, Chioma Onyekwere’s enormous throw also shattered the 16-year-old African record held by South African Elizna Naudé.

Although she already has a wildcard to Budapest due to her standing as the African champion, it is as satisfying to note that Chioma reached and exceeded the World Championship qualification requirement with her most recent achievement.

This season, Chioma Onyekwere’s trajectory has been steadily higher; her first throw, two weeks ago, was 55.88m, and this weekend, she improved to 60.79m. Her new personal best beats her old record of 63.30m by more than 1.5 metres.

After having one of her greatest years in 2022, when she became the first Nigerian woman to ever win gold at the Commonwealth Games and the African Championships in Mauritius, there is hope that 2023 would be even better for the athlete and engineer who is located in America.
