Group Declines Mandatory Bill Of 5-Year Service Before License

0

The , has declined the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which seeks to make it mandatory for graduates in medical and dental fields to work in Nigeria for five years before being granted full license.

The bill which was described as discriminatory, harsh and not in the interest of the people tends to check the mass exodus of medical professionals from the country.

The legislation titled, states, ‘A Bill for an Act to amend the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act, Cap. M379, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to mandate any Nigeria-trained medical or dental practitioner to practice in Nigeria for a minimum of five years before being granted a full license by the council in order to make quality health services available to Nigeria; and for related matters.’

However, the MDCAN in a press statement signed by its President, Dr. Victor Makanjuola, and Secretary-General, Dr. Yemi Raji, said the passion and concern for the health of Nigerians demonstrated by the sponsor of the bill as the panacea for physician brain drain is misdirected, ill-informed, and poorly thought through.

“In fact, this bill has the possible effect of doing the exact opposite – aggravating the exodus which we have been working with the executive arm of government to mitigate. It is pertinent to state that none of the suggestions of the inter-ministerial committee on brain drain and bonding of health workers has been implemented till date. Perhaps, a simple consultation with the primary constituency to be affected by the bill would have afforded the Honorable member a clearer understanding of the hydra-headed nature of the problem he is trying to solve.

“This bill, without making any assumptions about the ill intent of the proposer, simply lacks the basic ingredients of good faith in the sense that it is both discriminatory and harsh, to say the least, and not in the interest of the people,” MDCAN stated.

The association said a further consideration of the passage of the bill will amount to a wild goose chase in addressing the challenge of brain drain.

It said without addressing the retention of more senior doctors, coercion of the fresh doctors to stay in the system will be a futile effort if quality and effective health care delivery is the ultimate desire of the proponents of the bill.

“The question now is, are we going to have another Bill to mandate the senior doctors to stay in the system for 10 years? Curiously, the bill violates the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, as Section 34 (1) b states that “no person shall be held in slavery or servitude” while Section 34 (1) c states that “no one shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labour”.

“This bill is therefore an excellent example of modern-day slavery. It is shocking and very disrespectful to consider this rather odious bill as a measure for regulating one of the noblest professions.

“Bonding already exists in the civil service with clear guidelines for its application. The government at both State and Federal levels do provide sponsorship for university education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a provision that individuals who benefit from such sponsorship will be bonded for a specified number of years. For this Bill to therefore, consider bonding medical doctors who never benefited from any public sponsorship is, therefore, an anomaly, and a clear attempt to reap from where one has not sowed,” the association stated.

MDCAN further noted that the idea that Nigerian-trained medical doctors received heavily subsidised education is a pure fallacy as tuition has remained part of the fees paid by every medical student.

“The fact that this amount is smaller relative to other countries – especially the developed countries – does not amount to subsidy, as every graduate who is lucky to get gainfully employed afterwards pays back by earning salaries far lower than their peers in developed countries. The irony is that the generation that had federal and state governments’ scholarships and meal subsidies on campus are the ones suggesting bonding of students who are self-sponsored,” it added.

2023 UTME: JAMB Fixes New Date For Exercise

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new date for the commencement of the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

The board disclosed this in a statement signed by its Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin in Abuja on Sunday.

Benjamin said the UTME which was earlier scheduled to commence on April 29, would now start on April 25, 2023.

2023: JAMB Announces UTME Registration

He also said the board would hold its rescheduled mock-UTME on April 18, 2023.

”It would be recalled that JAMB had earlier conducted its 2023 Mock-UTME on Thursday, March 30 in 725 centres across the country.

”However, the exercise ran into some technical hitches in some centres, thereby denying some candidates the opportunity to sit for the examination.

”The board’s mock examination was designed for the purpose of testing its preparedness and that of its partners for the UTME as well as give prospective candidates the opportunity to have hands-on experience of the CBT test environment.

” It is therefore, in order to give those candidates, who were unable to sit for the examination owing to no fault of theirs, the opportunity to take the examination that the mock examination had been rescheduled to hold on Tuesday, April 18,,” he said.

He said that candidates who were present and screened for the examination but could not sit for it had been rescheduled to retake the mock examination on April 18.

Benjamin, therefore, said the result of the candidates who successfully took the mock examination on March 30, had been released.

He also said the board had brought forward the conduct of its 2023 UTME which was earlier scheduled to hold from Saturday, April 29, to Tuesday, April 25.

He said the adjustment in the date of the UTME was to accommodate some other major and critical national assignments.

”By so doing, the board hopes that no citizen will be denied the opportunity of exercising their civic responsibilities.

”It should be noted that the board does not have the liberty of shifting forward its examination as other public examinations are billed to commence their exercises in the early part of May 2023.

“Yet another factor is the need to accommodate those institutions with stable academic calendar to resume as scheduled,” he added.

He said the board would continue to partner with relevant agencies of government to ensure that its candidates got the best.

He said the board also solicited the understanding of all as it delivered on its critical mandate.

Senate Committee Chairman Kicks Against Proposed Compulsory Five-Year Service For Medical Workers

0

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary and Secondary Health in the Senate, Dr Ibrahim Oloriegbe has joined other critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s health sector to express reservations on a proposed bill seeking to mandate Nigerian-trained medical and dental professionals to practice for a minimum of five years before being granted a full license.

The proposed bill has passed the second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill seeks to amend the Medical Doctors and Dental Practitioners Act, Cap. M379, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

It is to mandate any Nigeria-trained medical or dental practitioner to practice in Nigeria for a minimum of five (5) years before being granted a full license by the Council to make quality health services available to Nigeria; and for related matters (HB.2130).

The bill is being sponsored by a member Representing Oshodi Isolo II Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Ganiyu Johnson.

The legislator who is a medical practitioner representing Kwara Central Senatorial District made his reservations known in an opinion statement he signed and made available to the media. He captioned: “My position on the Bill to make it mandatory for Medical and Dental practitioners not to be given full practising license until five years after graduation to stem brain drain.”

Oloriegbe stated that the legislation is not strong enough to curb the menace of brain drain in the country’s health sector resulting from the quest of medical doctors to seek better working conditions abroad.

He explained further that “the factors responsible for brain drain are multifaceted and the mere denial of full practice license to medical practitioners as contained in the proposal will never resolve and may even aggravate them.”

“Besides, it is not only medical doctors that are leaving the country for greener pastures abroad, there are other health workers, as well as professionals in other fields of human endeavour, trained but leaving the country on daily basis for similar purposes, consequently, focusing attention only on the medical doctors is like curing one of many ailments that are threatening the life of a dying patient without finding solutions to the others,” the lawmaker explained.

Oloriegbe stressed in the statement that “with all due respect, the issues and facts related to granting of practising license are not understood by the sponsor of the bill, thus, it becomes imperative for me as a stakeholder in the health sector to offer my perspective, this time as a medical practitioner of many years and not particularly as a senator with the privilege of heading the Senate Committee on Health.”

According to him, the piece of the proposed legislation at a minimum violates the right to the “Freedom of Movement” (Sec. 41) and “The right to freedom from discrimination” under (Sec. 42) as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) 1999, as amended.

These rights, he explained cannot be ordinarily denied by any person or government, thus, the Senate can’t be seeking legal redress through an illegal procedure.

The legislator also argued further that a person who is “qualified as a Medical Doctor” cannot be denied a license to practice having been certified qualified, except if he is found wanting in the ethics of the profession as labour laws will come into place in situations like this.

The Chairman of the committee said furthermore that “before the bill can be considered for legislative passage and executives’ approval, the following fundamental issues are important to scrutinise when does the 5-year period start, before or after the housemanship and what sort of license will be awarded to a fully trained doctor instead of a full license to practice under the proposal?”

He, therefore, said that resolving the challenge of brain drain in the country’s health sector cannot be achieved through this bill but rather, the lawmakers need to address the various factors that make skilled health workers desire to migrate out of Nigeria.

According to him, “rather than enacting laws that will curtail the rights of the citizens to free movement and seek better opportunities through legal means, legislators should advocate for an improved system that will be very attractive and make them unwilling to travel abroad to seek better living conditions.”

He recommended that medical students could be obliged to choose between paying the standard market rate for their training or opting for government-subsidised training and that quality education in its real sense can’t be free while those who however opted for subsidized training after their qualification would in return be compelled to work in Nigeria for a certain time or refund the subsidies which is a practice obtainable even in advanced countries such as the UK.

Oloriegbe also called for an improvement in the country’s health system with sustainable investments to make it conducive for the various health workers to work.

EPL: Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal Draw Puts Title Back In City’s Hands

0

Roberto Firmino’s scored a dramatic late equaliser as Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League was cut to six points in an incident-packed encounter with Liverpool at Anfield.

The Gunners were in cruise control with a two-goal lead inside the first half-hour as they went in search for their first win at Liverpool since 2012, but were left bitterly disappointed as they paid the price for losing their discipline at times.

Gabriel Martinelli pounced on sloppy Liverpool defending to put Arsenal ahead after eight minutes then Gabriel Jesus rose unmarked between Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson to head home at the Kop End.

Liverpool sparked into life after a flashpoint between Granit Xhaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold late in the first half, Mohamed Salah scoring at the far post just before the break to set up a thriller.

There was a bizarre incident at the end of the first half when referee’s assistant Constantine Hatzidakis appeared to elbow Liverpool defender Robertson  as the teams left the field.

In a dramatic second half, Salah missed his second successive penalty when he shot wide after Rob Holding fouled Diogo Jota before Firmino rose at the far post to head home Alexander-Arnold’s cross with three minutes left.

In a frantic climax, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale – who had already saved crucially from Darwin Nunez – produced two incredible stops from Salah and and Ibrahima Konate as Mikel Arteta’s pace-setters had to settle for a point, with Liverpool fully deserving their share of the spoils for a stirring fightback.

Liverpool inspired by flashpoint

Aaron Ramsdale saves from Ibrahima Konate in the final seconds of the match
Arsenal dropped points from a leading position for only the third time this season – and it could have been worse for the Gunners but for this stunning save by Aaron Ramsdale from Ibrahima Konate at the death

Liverpool had produced an insipid performance and were being outplayed until Xhaka unwisely chose to tangle with Alexander-Arnold, the incident injecting Jurgen Klopp’s side with the energy and inspiration they had been lacking – and crucially bringing the Anfield crowd into play.

Salah’s goal was the perfect invitation to mount a second-half siege in front of the Kop and it was one Liverpool accepted as they finally showed some of their true form.

Arsenal were penned back and it took an outstanding display of goalkeeping from Ramsdale to prevent a resurgent Liverpool from completing the perfect comeback.

While Liverpool’s attack looked more potent after the break, once again they looked so vulnerable at the back and both Arsenal goals were cheap.

In the final reckoning it is a result that suits neither side, reducing Liverpool’s chances of a top-four place even further and offering a boost to Arsenal’s title rivals Manchester City, who trailed by eight points at the start of the weekend but have now seen that gap come down by two points and still have a game in hand on the north Londoners.

Arsenal squander perfect position before Ramsdale heroics

Gabriel Martinelli celebrates
Gabriel Martinelli is only the second South American player to reach 25 Premier League goals while aged 21 or younger, after Gabriel Jesus (26)

Arsenal’s players slumped to the turf in disappointment when Firmino arrived at the far post to head in the perfect delivery from Alexander-Arnold.

But their wounds were largely self-inflicted after casting aside the calm control they demonstrated for much of the first half by needlessly angering Liverpool and the Anfield crowd, after which the home side were unrecognisable.

The fact that Arsenal came away with even a point was thanks to a remarkable display by Ramsdale, who emerged as a heroic figure to repeatedly deny a fired-up Liverpool attack and secure a draw that that might yet prove vital in the outcome of this title race.

He saved well as Nunez raced clear but he kept the best for last with a flying fingertip save from Salah’s deflected curling effort, before somehow keeping out Konate’s attempt to bundle home the winner from practically on the goalline with only seconds left.

Frank Lampard was booked to COMMENTATE on Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid before managerial return

Frank Lampard was set to be at Chelsea’s clash with Real Madrid as a commentator before being handed the role as interim manager on this week.

  • Lampard was due to work for BT Sport for Madrid clash
  • Is now MANAGING Chelsea vs Los Blancos
  • Will take charge of Blues until end of season

WHAT HAPPENED? On April 12 Lampard will take charge of Chelsea at the Bernabeu as they take on Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg, but as fate would have it, he was supposed to be working there that night anyway! BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher has confirmed that the Chelsea interim manager was booked as an analyst for the clash, with Lampard texting him to cancel after being given the caretaker role.

WHAT THEY SAID:

Speaking on 5 Live’s Friday Football Social, Fletcher said: “Frank Lampard was supposed to be with us in Madrid to do commentary for the Real Madrid v Chelsea match with me. He sent me a message saying ‘I’m supposed to be there working with you, and now I’m going to be on the line!’

“It’s total madness that he was going to be there anyway – now he’s going to be there in a very important capacity, let alone watching it and analysing it!”

THE BIGGER THE BIGGER PTICTURE:

Lampard was reinstated as Chelsea bosson Wednesday night after Todd Boehly ruthlessly sacked Graham Potter  with the Blues 11th in the Premier League following a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa. He was in charge of the Blues for 18 months before being dismissed by previous owner Roman Abramovich. Lampard was replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who went on to win the Champions League that season.

WHAT NEXT FOR LAMPARD & CHELSEA?

Osimhen’s Cardboard Statues Dot Naples As City Gets On Brink Of First Title In Post Maradona Era

0

The feeling is palpable. The expectations are high. Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen will be part of the history as Naples, which club, Napoli is at the brink of winning first Italian league title in 33 years since the legendary Diego Maradona last played for the club.

With many goals coming from either the boots or headers by Victor Osimhen, Napoli are 16 points clear from the second placed club, Lazio as the Serie A enters its home stretch.

The city is set for celebrations as the entire streets are adorned in sky blue, the colour of Napoli. Provisions are in place for a party on 4 June – the final day of the season – but Napoli’s wait for a first championship since Diego Maradona strolled these narrow streets could end in the next few weeks. Fifteen points from their final 10 games will make it certain, even if second-placed Lazio win all of theirs.

In the Quartieri Spagnoli, throughout Naples’ historic centre, up to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Fuorigrotta and beyond, the streets are decked with blue and white festoons. Buildings and steps have been painted the same hues.

Life-size cutouts of the current squad stand in one piazza, club shirts and player posters are pegged to washing lines in alleyways and youngsters queue for half a block to buy Napoli-coloured panino at at popular sandwich shop Con Molicao Senza.

Among the life-sized cutouts is that of Osimhen, an almost reincarnation of Maradona in terms of goal scoring.

Hotel rooms for the next couple of months have nearly all gone. Expats wanting to celebrate, football fans intrigued by Napoli’s story and visitors unexpectedly caught up in this historic moment are descending on the city. Sporting success coincides with a tourist boom.

“Naples is experiencing a moment of self-recognition and rediscovery of its greatness,” says author Angelo Forgione.

When Maradona inspired Napoli to a first Scudetto in 1987, fans placed a banner outside the city’s largest cemetery proclaiming: “You don’t know what you missed.” Now, a generation too young to remember such glory are living it themselves.

“I was six months old in 1990 but I grew up watching VHS of Diego Maradona,” says Vincenzo Credendino, from CalcioNapoli24 TV. “Now this Scudetto is like reconnecting with that time.”

Tributes to Luciano Spalletti’s players intertwine with endless Maradona artwork. He is everywhere in Naples’ charmingly gritty and dizzyingly chaotic labyrinth of streets – bar windows, bumper stickers, on billboards and etched across crumbling walls in giant murals.

At Bar Nilo, a strand of Maradona’s hair rotates as part of a shrine to the Argentine. In an underground museum the belongings acquired by his maid’s son when Maradona left the city are on display.

“Maradona is like God here,” says 23-year-old fan Maria Roberta De Iesu. “He gave people hope. Neapolitans see themselves in Maradona.”

When Maradona arrived for a world record fee from Barcelona in July 1984, the city was still on its knees from an earthquake that killed almost 2,500 people four years earlier. Feuds between the Camorra, the region’s mafia, were as bitter as ever, unemployment was huge and the Bank of Naples was facing bankruptcy.

“Yet in a Naples on the bottom, Napoli, with the help of politics, managed to buy the strongest and most expensive footballer in the world and touch the sky,” adds Forgione.

Then president Corrado Ferlaino had to lean on the city’s mayor to help finance the deal, fans offered contributions to help get it over the line, anything to get Maradona.

‘El Pibe de Oro’ was everything to Naples, and Naples was everything to him. The city resonated with its Golden Boy not just because he inspired their club to two Serie A titles and a Uefa Cup but because they recognised him. He was anti-establishment, he echoed their principles and shouldered their concerns.

“Maradona was really good with his tongue, his mouth, his attitude,” explains Credendino. “He understood how to get the heart of the Neapolitan people, he touched the right chords.”

Maradona, despite his relationship with the Neapolitan mafia, brought “justice to the people” after struggles against the north that date back more than a century to the unification of Italy, says culture expert Francesco Carignani.

“He had many problems in his life but in Naples we only remember him for the joy,” adds fan Paolo Cimmino. “We connect him as a man to a conqueror – the south won versus the north.”

No club south of Rome has won Serie A since the Napoli of Maradona, Careca, Ciro Ferrara and a young Gianfranco Zola in 1990, and Neapolitans still endure hostile taunts from their northern rivals about crime, poverty, cholera outbreaks and calls for Mount Vesuvius to erupt over the city.

People here “are first of all Neapolitans and then Italian”, explains Bellini, Napoli’s iconic stadium announcer. They have their own language, culture and history. Naples was once a thriving European capital, it remains a city of intriguing architecture, Caravaggio, pizza. Most of all, there is an intensity to life in Campania.

“Southern people in Italy, they live everything with love, with so much emotion, in different ways to the north,” adds Cimmino.

Napoli had to fall before they could rise again. Financial decline, relegation and bankruptcy followed the glory years but the fans remained. More than 50,000 attended a game in Serie C in 2004-05.

“For our city soccer is so important,” explains journalist Elena Lopresti. “It is not only football, it is a social instrument, a tool to develop us as a society.”

Film producer Aurelio de Laurentiis seized an opportunity to purchase the club in 2004 and restore top-flight and European football to Napoli, the fourth-most well-supported club in Italy after Juventus, Milan and Inter, but one whose fanbase is concentrated in the region, rather than spread “from the Alps to Sicily” as Forgione says of the big three.

“De Laurentiis had a parachute,” adds Credendino. “It was the love of the people, always ready to go to the stadium, always ready to support the team.”

Naples, Forgione explains, is a rare European metropolis represented by a single club. “Napoli’s victory is the victory of identity, of those who live it completely,” he adds.

“In Naples, football is everything,” says Cimmino. “It is joy, it is love, it is fun, it is sadness. It is a way to escape from the daily problems, a way to have fun with the people and party, and this period is happiness.”

The De Laurentiis era has been characterised by astute recruitment – Edinson Cavani, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Jorginho, Gonzalo Higuain – profitable sales, and falling short in the title race.

It was only last summer, after another championship bid slipped away, that ultras promised to return boss Spalletti’s stolen Fiat Panda on the condition he left the club.

“Now he deserves a Ferrari, not a Panda,” laughs journalist Credendino.

Spalletti is not from Naples, but he shares that Neapolitan passion. After being sacked by Inter, he spent two years on his farm in Tuscany before taking on the Napoli job. Now he lives by the training ground working relentlessly to deliver the Scudetto.

Maradona was the face of Napoli’s previous triumph but this time unfamiliar heroes have emerged – cleverly acquired by sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli and fuelled by Spalletti’s coaching.

“Giuntoli is the man of this miracle,” says Credendino, despite some fans fretting when the club sold high-profile stars Kalidou Koulibaly, Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens last year.

EPL Round-Up: Man City keeps Aribo, Onuachu in bottom spot with Southampton

0

Though the Nigerian duo of Aribo and Onuachu were conspicuously missing in action for the Saints, their woes were compounded by the ruthless City team

Manchester City kept the pressure on Arsenal as they romped to a 4-1 win over Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Though the Nigerian duo of Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu were conspicuously missing in action for the Saints, their woes were compounded by the ruthless City team, who has momentarily reduced Arsenal’s lead at the top to five points.

As for Southampton, they stay on 23 points but now with an inferior goals difference of -27.

The latest defeat for Southampton is their 19th in the present campaign in the league and the chance of beating the drop is looking bleaker every passing week.

Though Southampton did well to hold City in the first 45 minutes, Erling Haaland broke the deadlock just before the half-time whistle sounded.

Jack Grealish doubled City’s lead in the 58th minute and 10 minutes later, Haaland made it 3-0 as Pep Guardiola’s men were already coasting to another routine victory.

Sékou Mara pulled one back for the Saints in the 72nd minute barely three minutes after he was introduced into the game.

It wasn’t long, however, before City restored their three-goal lead with Juan Alvarez scoring from the penalty spot in the 75th minute.

More heartache

Elsewhere, it was heartache again for Nigerian quartet of Taiwo Awoniyi, Emmanuel Dennis, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho after they failed to get any match point on Saturday.

While Nottingham Forest were beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa, Leicester City lost 1-0 at home against AFC Bournemouth.

With these losses, the Super Eagles stars will be spending the weekend in the relegation zone with their clubs.

Also on Saturday, Alex Iwobi was in action for 90 minutes but he was not able to save Everton from going down to a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay and Antony Martial with his first league goal ensured United stayed in the top-four zone

With 27 points from 30 games, the Toffes are just outside of the relegation zone due to their better goals difference compared to their other relegation battlers.

La Liga: Chukwueze Nets Curling Winner Over Real Madrid

0

Chukwueze got his second goal in the 80th minute to complete the comeback victory for Villarreal over Real Madrid

After a below-average performance for the Super Eagles during the international break, Villarreal forward Samuel Chukwueze picked up the pieces with a quite phenomenal showing for the Yellow Submarine as he scored a brace against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday night.

The Nigerian player was the man of the match as his 80th-minute strike completed the comeback victory for Villarreal, which had cancelled Real Madrid’s lead twice during the encounter. It was Chukwueze’s sixth league goal of the season.

The 23-year-old winger scored a brace and was involved in Jose Morales’ goal as Villareal recorded a 3-2 comeback win over Real Madrid, whom they had trounced earlier at the Estadio Ceramica three months ago to break a five-year jinx against the Galacticos.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s victory was revenge for the Yellow Submarine, who were eliminated by Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey last January, in a five-goal thriller in which Chukwueze scored.
The Nigerian was sensational on the night. He first got on the scoresheet for the visitors in the 39th minute with a dazzling dribble past David Alaba in the Madrid box and fired past Thibaut Courtois to cancel Pau Torres’ 16th-minute own goal.

But while Villareal kept the tempo to record their second consecutive league win over the Carlo Ancelotti-led side, Chukwueze was one of the most talked about players in the first half of the game, with several offensive attempts against Nacho on the left side of the pitch.

However, three minutes into the second half, Villareal lost concentration and gave Vinicius Junior the time and space to receive a pass from Dani Ceballos before he slotted past Pepe Reina.

The visitors restored parity for the second time in the 71st minute after Chukwueze’s cross scrambled into the legs of substitute, Jose Morales, who didn’t hesitate before firing past Courtois.

Super Eagles Drop In FIFA Ranking, Argentina Rise To The Top

0

After a loss and a win and just one goal scored over 180 minutes, the Super Eagles are now ranked No. 6 in Africa.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles, coached by Jose Peseiro, have dropped down the FIFA rankings.

The team, who fell 1-0 to Guinea Bissau last month, is currently ranked 40th in the world, down from 35th in the previous ranking released in December.

Nigeria was the fifth-ranked team in Africa, below FIFA World Cup semifinalists Morocco, African champions Senegal, Tunisia, and Cameroon. But in the latest ranking, Egypt has overtaken Nigeria and climbed into fifth place. Cameroon also fell three places, from fourth to seventh.

World champions Argentina moved to the summit, supplanting South American rivals, Brazil. FIFA, in a release, said, “Six years after last topping the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, Argentina (1st, plus 1) are once again at the summit of world football.

“Recent friendly wins against Panama (2-0) and Curaçao (7-0) helped the world champions dethrone Brazil (3rd, minus 2), who paid a high price for defeat in their friendly against Morocco (2-1).”

The release also revealed that the Central African Republic have been the most improved side since the last ranking. “However, the most improved side in this edition are Central African Republic (122nd, plus 10).

“By twice beating Madagascar, at the time ranked 30 places above them, Les Fauves du Bas-Oubangui rose 10 places in the global standings, outperforming other notable movers such as Namibia (106th, plus 7), Malaysia (138th, plus 7) and The Gambia (120th, plus 6).”

The Super Eagles will have the chance to improve their ranking in June when they travel to Freetown to face Sierra Leone in a continuation of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
