Combining different Foods in meals not Dangerous – Nutritionists

0

Nutritionists have debunked the notion that certain food combinations when eaten together may be dangerous.

They noted that claims that the combination of some foods together in meals is unhealthy are often based on myths and not backed by scientific evidence, stressing that all foods can be eaten together except in cases of allergies.

They said that as long as the foods sit well with the taste buds, it is okay to consume them.

Speaking with correspondent, the experts, Mmesoma Ezeh, Nutritionist at NOWA Educational Centre, and Anicho Prosper, Nutritionist and Dietitian at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital said that it may be necessary to address the reasons why some people find certain foods repulsive and not generally claim the combination of foods is dangerous

According to Ezeh, all foods can be eaten together as long as the tastebuds and the stomach can tolerate it, noting that except there is an allergy to the food.

She said: “Total avoidance of certain foods should be based on allergic reactions, inability to digest certain nutrients contained in certain foods, or nutritional advice from a nutritionist or dietitian to stay off certain foods for obvious health reasons.

“In cases of allergies, swelling shortness of breath, etc. If certain foods that one cannot digest are consumed, indigestion, diarrhea, and discomfort may occur.”

She stressed that people should be sensitised and educated to know that the claim that some food cannot be combined is a myth.

She said: “Nutritional Education can be done in various ways. It can be done via posting educative nutritional information on various social media platforms, and billboards. Workshops and health talks can also be organised by nutritionists or dietitians.”

Also speaking with correspondent, Anicho Prosper said that every edible food can be eaten as people deem fit, noting that there are no restrictions to that.

He urged Nigerians to rather look into the quantity and quality of the foods they consume while also trying to ascertain the ones they may be allergic to, adding that some of the foods people may not be able to tolerate could be due to the mode of preparation, the level of flavour, and the ingredients used in their preparations.

He said: “The reason for their not being to combine some foods could include lack of tolerance and allergy. However, we must understand that foods require some vitamins and minerals for their absorption like the heme iron which requires Vitamin C for its digestion.

“The health implications of eating some foods that people are allergic to include vomiting and nausea. Like those who are allergic to eating protein-based foods( Beans, eggs, milk). Such foods could damage some of their intestinal walls or even lead to injury inside the walls of the intestine.

“Sensitisation on the reality of allergies as being the real danger of food combinations could occur via the print media, the use of food aids, community outreaches, and evidence-based nutrition (gotten from research conducted by people.”

According to a study published online by Healthline (2021), most of the claims on likely dangers from food combinations are not based on science.

The study says there is no evidence to support the idea that food combination contributes to disease or toxins in the body.

Another study published by Biting Truth (2018) said there is no scientific evidence to authenticate the veracity of food combinations problems.

Healthy Heart crucial to stable Mental Health – Pathologist

0

A Clinical Pathologist, Dr. Olawale Olusanya, says a prolonged period of mental health issues, caused by stress and anxiety, can impact negatively the heart’s health.

Olusanya, Centre Manager, Bola Tinubu Health and Diagnostic Centre, said this in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos.

He said that mental health issues caused by political anxiety in the past months and the socio-economic condition in the country were some of the factors that could increase heart rate, levels of cortisol, and risk of heart-related diseases.

According to him, people who suffer from arrhythmia (irregular heart rate) are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and stress compared with those without arrhythmia.

By definition, arrhythmia, a heart rhythm abnormality, causes the heart to beat too slowly at less than 60 beats per minute or too quickly at more than 100 beats per minute or record uncoordinated contractions.

Olusanya said that people with arrhythmia risked cardiovascular incidences, such as heart attack and stroke, while they might also have a greater risk of mortality.

He said that studies had shown that symptoms of anxiety and intense stress or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) might also be independently associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

”People handle stress in different ways. While some people are able to handle stress by making healthy lifestyle choices, others develop habits that are detrimental to their overall health.

”Smoking, excessive alcohol intake, binge eating, and lack of exercise are some of the lifestyle choices that can lead to the deterioration of heart health.

”To effectively manage stress-related mental health issues, a cardiac event monitoring device, such as Bittium Faros, can be used to periodically detect physical activities that trigger stress in the body.

”This lightweight device provides clinical accuracy and ease in checking heartbeat and other heart-related parameters for 24 hours or more.

”Due to the portability of bittium faros and its high level of accuracy, it empowers people with the ability to take charge of their heart health on the go,” Olusanya said.

According to him, a mini-cardiac monitor allows patients to get tested on-demand for long periods without having to contend with long waiting periods in hospitals.

Olusanya said that regular cardiac monitoring could prevent sudden complications and enable quick intervention and management.

INEC Asks Court To Vary Inspection Order Granted Atiku, Obi

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission has urged the Presidential Election Petition Court to vary the orders that were granted to the candidates of the People’s Democratic Party and Labour Party, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi respectively, to inspect materials used for the last presidential election.

INEC, in a motion on notice filed on March 4, is praying the court to vary the order which restrained it from tampering with materials used for the election.

The commission said it needed to reconfigure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System for the next round of elections.

Update: Court Grants Atiku, Obi’s Request Over Election Materials

The appellate court had on March 3, granted leave to Atiku of the PDP and Obi of Labour Party to inspect election materials used by INEC to conduct the February 25 presidential election.

The court granted the duo permission, following two separate ex parte applications filed by Atiku and Obi, who came second and third respectively in the presidential election won by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.

In the application filed by the commission and sighted by NAN, the commission is asking the court to vary the order to allow it to reconfigure its BVAS for the March 11 governorship and state houses of assembly elections.

No date has however been fixed for hearing of the application.

A credible source in the commission had told NAN that the application became necessary following an order restraining it from tampering with the information embedded in the BVAS machines until due inspection was conducted and Certified True Copies of them were issued.

Speaking off camera, the source said that the commission would require sufficient time to reconfigure the BVAS needed to conduct the election that would take place in the 36 states of the federation excluding the FCT.

According to the source, considering the number of BVAS required to conduct the election across the states, INEC needs to reconfigure the BVAS used for the February 25 elections and deploy them to polling units for the March 11 elections.

The source said that the technical team of the commission had to be deployed on time to start the reconfiguration of the devices, which had to be done one by one.

The source said the order was pertinent as not getting it could result to a postponement of the Saturday governorship and state houses of assembly elections.

Chrisland: Court Sets Inquest Hearing For April 4

0

The coroner inquest set up to ascertain the cause of death of a 12-year-old Chrisland School pupil, Whitney Adeniran, who died on February 9, has been fixed for April 4 for hearing to commence.

Magistrate Olabisi Fajana fixed the date after entertaining submissions of all counsels who appeared before the court sitting in Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The counsel to the deceased family, Femi Falana, SAN, had informed the court that they were unable to file a witness statement as instructed by the court at the last adjourned date.

Falana told the court that the Magistrate Registry refused to process the enrolling of the witness statement, on the grounds that there was no provision for filling of coroner processes.

The counsel for Chrisland School, Olukayode Enitan, SAN, and the state counsel, Akin George, also corroborated the position of Falana, seeking the court’s directives as to how to get their processes filed.

Fajana informed the counsels that she would get directives from the Chief Magistrate on how to ensure that the processes were filed before the Coroner.

Chrisland Schools’ Whitney Died from Electrocution, Asphyxia- Lagos Govt

Enitan informed the court that he had an application before it, seeking to get samples and materials to carry out an independent evaluation of the autopsy report.

In a counter-reaction, Falana, who said that they have not been served, told the court that the autopsy of the deceased was done in the presence of the school representatives and other concerned parties.

However, the state counsel, George, told the court that what the state received was a letter, not an application, and the state would respond at the appropriate time.

Fajana, thereafter, adjourned the commencement of trial until April 4 and advised all counsels to ensure that their processes were filed and confirmed on April 3.

Whitney died during the school’s inter-house sports activities at the Agege Stadium, after being electrocuted and suffering Asphyxia, the post-mortem report from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital revealed.

The 12-year-old was buried in Lagos last Thursday.

Varsity To Develop Made-in-Nigeria Water-Fueled Car

0

The Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Prof. Ibrahim Dabo, has said the university is working to develop a made-in-Nigeria car that will use water.

The dean made this known on Saturday in Zaria while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on the commemoration of the 2023 World Engineering Day for sustainable development.

Dabo said there were several breakthroughs in ABU including the recent development of an electric car and a shell eco-marathon car.

He added that the faculty was working on the development of a car that would be running with water.

“The shell eco-marathon car that was developed by the university had a capacity to cover over 100 kilometers with a litre of fuel,’’ he said.

According to him, the shell eco-marathon car has been taken to South Africa where it performed excellently, stressing that the university is working to improve on its fuel efficiency.

“The concept for the shell eco-marathon car was a small car that takes a maximum of two people for a racing competition, not for mass transit,’’ he said.

He added that the electric car that was developed is also a small car that takes a maximum of four people.

The dean however noted that the closure of Nigerian universities for 2023 general elections made the commemoration of the event low keyed at ABU.

He described the theme of the event, ‘Engineering innovations for more resilient world’, as topical, apt and timely.

Dabo, therefore, called on the government to encourage outcome based education across tertiary institutions to boost and strengthen the quality and skills of engineers produced in Nigeria.

He also appealed for improved collaboration between the academia and industries.

He lamented that most of the industries around most of the institutions were closed, few functional ones import skills and essential raw materials, resulting into parallel position between the academia and industries.

The World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development was proclaimed by UNESCO at its 40th General Conference in 2019.

The day is celebrated worldwide on March 4 of each year since 2020 as a UNESCO international day of celebration of engineers and engineering.

LASU Students Shut Gates, Protest Military Maltreatment

0

The students of Lagos State University, Ojo, have shut both gates leading to the school in protest against soldiers torturing some students last week.

A parent who could not exit the campus told The PUNCH that the students locked up both the Iyana-Iba and Ojo gates, thereby preventing both vehicular and pedestrian movement.

He said, “We have been here for some hours. The students locked up both gates. Everywhere is filled with vehicles trying to come in and exit. The security men said the students shut the gates because their executives and some students were beaten by soldiers last week. We are all waiting at the gate, no movement.”

The institution’s Public Relations Officer promised to make enquiries on the cause of the protest and get back to our correspondent. But as of the time of filing this report, he had yet to reply to our enquiry as promised.
