Take care of your Heart, CMD urges Nigerians

0

The Chief Medical Director, Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti Prof. Adekunle Ajayi, has advised Nigerians to take care of their heart while it is still functioning properly.

He gave the advice while delivering an inaugural lecture titled “Low Risk, Not risk”: The Travails of a Lifetime Pump Fighting Fate” on Wednesday at Ekiti State University in Ado-Ekiti.

The professor of Cardiology said some major risk factors can easily damage the human heart and cause untimely death.

He stated that smoking cigarettes, marijuana, high blood pressure, serum lipids, diabetes mellitus, obesity, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and metabolic syndrome are capable of causing cardiovascular disease.

Ajayi explained that smoking is associated with an increased risk for coronary heart disease in adulthood, but smoking has a higher risk of the disease in women than men.

He described hypertension as one of the strongest risk factors capable of causing cardiovascular diseases such as coronary disease, left ventricular hypertrophy and valvular heart disease and stroke.

The professor said that for an individual to lower his or her cardiovascular risk, the individual must quit smoking immediately, while individuals should choose a healthy food diet, among other measures.

He added that “low risk is never no risk, I want individuals and Nigerians to take responsibility for a healthy heart, while stakeholders in the health system must upgrade their supportive involvement to reduce morbidity and mortality arising from cardiovascular diseases.

“For Nigerians to lower their cardiovascular risk, smokers should quit smoking and for those who are yet to start, they must not start.

“I want to advise individuals to eat healthy foods with a balanced diet always to curb any forms of heart disease.

“Another way to keep the heart healthy and free from disease is to be physically active; government should provide safe sidewalks or initiate weekly keep fit exercise to promote physical activities.

“An individual must reduce Body Mass Index to less than 25kg, while blood pressure should be lower to less than 140/90mmHg a and maintain blood cholesterol of less than 5mmol/l or 190mg/dl.”

He said that if Nigerians could adhere strictly to the prescribed measures, it would reduce the mortality arising from cardiovascular diseases in the country.

Stakeholders in the health sector have called for deliberate measures to kick out leprosy from Nigeria.

They made the call at a one-day Symposium on World Leprosy Day with the theme: “The Multi-Dimensional Impact of Leprosy on the Sufferers: The Need to have the Conversation Now” in Abuja”.

Leprosy is a curable infectious disease mainly causing skin lesions and nerve damage.

Dr Chukwuma Anyaike, National Coordinator, National Tuberculosis, Buruli Ulcer and Leprosy Control Programme said there was need for Nigeria to join the global community to kick out leprosy from the country.

This, he said, it was because of its effects not just on adults but also on children.

Anyaike said that the group strongly believed that if leprosy was kicked out it would contribute majorly towards achieving sustainable development goals as a country.

Dr Sunday Udo, National Director of Leprosy Mission in Nigeria, said, “leprosy is really not getting much attention in Nigeria like other diseases probably because it affects the poorest of the poor.”

Udo said the symposium was put together to mark the World Leprosy Day was aimed at creating awareness on the disease and know how far the country had fared and the way forward.

Mrs Nella Andem-Rabana, SAN, Board Chairperson TLMN, said leprosy was curable, adding, “but because it is not known on time, it leaves indelible marks on people.

Andem-Rabana advised people to stop living by speculation and build their knowledge on how to tackle the disease so as to help themselves and those around them.

The National Leprosy Goodwill Ambassador, Chief Chika Okpala also known as Chief Zebrudaya called for the need to intensify sensitisation on the disease .

Okpala said:”If people are properly educated on the disease , then it would stop this stigmatisation that is rampant in Nigeria.”

He said that there was need for the government to take deliberate steps to tackle the disease, adding a lot needed to be done to eradicate the misconceptions around the disease.

The induction course for all the unit executives coincided with the inauguration of NANNM-FCT guests house, built within the premises of the council secretariat at Gwagwalada, Abuja. Each unit comprises the government owned general hospital, ministries and other government owned sectors.

During the induction, the chairman, NANNM-FCT, Deborah Yusuf, stated that the inducted executives would run the affairs of the council for the next four years, 2023 to 2026. She congratulated them for emerging as leaders through a democratic and highly contested election, urging them to always remember that they were first among the equals.

“As leaders of a professional association, we need to be well equipped, better informed and positioned to give our best. Leadership is a call to service, is a collective responsibility and sacrifice. I therefore enjoined you all to be focused, courageous and be a motivator.

“You must also be an organizer, be answerable and be responsible for your actions, especially on decisions taken. You must be a team leader, a leader who knows and goes the way and others follow. Do not follow where the path leads but instead where there is no path and leave a path, challenges are enormous, but yet not insurmountable.”

Yusuf also charged the executives to have clear communication skills and to be transparent and embrace change focusing on a strong goal, guided with ethics and standard. She urged them not to let adversaries stand in the way of good decisions and that they must defend their decision and not pull back. Hospital Manages Miscarriages Not Abortions – Witness Tells Panel

0

As the Special Independent Investigative Panel on Allegations of Human Rights Violations in the Counter Insurgency Operations in the North East (SIIP-NE) continues sitting in Maiduguri Borno State, a specialist Registrar attached to Maimalari Military hospital at the headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai, 7 Division, Maiduguri, Dr. Chika Maduka told the panel that, the hospital only manages miscarriages and not abortion of pregnancies.

Dr. Maduka made this known while testifying before the panel on allegations of abortion of 10,000 pregnancies of women and girls during the counter insurgency operations in the North East. The witness who is also an obstetrics gynaecologist stated that although the hospital carries out medical termination of pregnancies when the need arises, it abides by the standard practice.

He told the 7-Member panel chaired by retired Justice Abdu Aboki that in his three years practice in the hospital he never carried out any abortion of pregnancies of women and girls as alleged in a Reuters’ report.

Also in his testimony before the panel, the Chief Nursing Superintendent at the hospital, Lt. Colonel D. Tumaka, said that the hospital does not have any record of abortion. According to the Chief Nurse, every medication administered to patients is prescribed by Doctors and they are documented in nurses’ drug charts as a routine practice.

He explained that, most of the patients they treat are wives of military personnel even as he conceded they offer some assistance to women and children rescued by the troops by way of providing them with water and food and ensuring they take their bath before the appropriate military authorities hand them over to the state government.

He also said that they ensure that the medical professional ethics which is also similar to that of the military profession was strictly adhered to in all ramifications at all times. He said, “The military is highly law-abiding and no military medical facility will subject itself to illicit medical practice.”

The panel also took turns to interrogate Corporal Micheal Babatunde, the mortuary technician, LT. Nuhu Danjuma Koro, the custodian of medical records, and Sgt Nelson Meture, the pharmacy Technician, all serving at the military medical facility.

Most baby Formula health claims Unscientific – Study

0

The vast majority of health claims used to advertise baby formula worldwide are not supported by rigorous scientific evidence, a study said on Thursday, leading researchers to urge that breast milk substitutes be sold in plain packaging.

The study comes a week after a group of doctors and scientists called for a regulatory crackdown on the $55-billion formula industry for “predatory” marketing which they said exploits the fears of new parents to convince them not to breastfeed.

Breastfeeding is widely recognised to have huge health benefits for babies.

The World Health Organisation and the US CDC recommend breastfeeding exclusively during the first six months of a newborn’s life.

However, that recommendation is followed for less than half of infants globally, according to the WHO.

Daniel Munblit, an honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College London and an author of the new study, said researchers were not on a “crusade” against infant formula, which should remain an option for mothers who cannot or choose not to breastfeed.

“But we are very much against inappropriate infant formula marketing, which provides misleading claims not backed up by solid evidence,” Munblit told Newsmen.

Munblit and an international team of researchers looked at the health claims made for 608 products on the websites of infant formula companies in 15 countries, including the United States, India, Britain, and Nigeria.

The most common claims were that formula supports brain development, strengthens immune systems, and more broadly helps growth.

Half of the products did not link the claimed health benefit to a specific ingredient, according to the study published in the BMJ journal.

Three-quarters did not refer to scientific evidence supporting their claims.

Of those that provided a scientific reference, more than half pointed to reviews, opinion pieces, or research on animals.

Just 14 per cent of the products referred to registered clinical trials on humans. However 90 per cent of those trials carried a high risk of bias, including missing data or the finding not supporting the claim, the study said.

And nearly 90 per cent of the clinical trials had authors who received funding from or had ties to the formula industry, it added.

The most commonly cited ingredient was polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are in breast milk and is considered important for brain development.

However, there is no evidence of any added benefit when the ingredient is added to baby formula, according to a Cochrane systematic review.

Munblit said the health claims were mostly used to advertise premium formula products, which could be “distressing” for parents who are misled into believing the ingredients are essential but cannot afford them.

When asked what he thinks needs to be done to address the problem, Munblit was concise.

“Plain packaging,” he said.

The study comes after a series of papers were published in the Lancet journal last week calling for global policymakers to end exploitative formula marketing.

WHO infant health specialist Nigel Rollins, an author of one of the Lancet papers, said busy parents “lack the time to properly scrutinise claims” about infant formula.

The new study showed that “governments and regulatory authorities must commit the necessary time and attention to review the claims of formula milk products,” Rollins said in a linked BMJ editorial.

Cross River Distributes Health Insurance Cards To Civil Servants

0

Public and Civil Servants registered under the Cross River State Health Insurance Scheme have received their identity cards designed to enhance access to affordable medical services.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Janet Ekpenyong, said that the insurance policy was essential to achieve universal health coverage and strengthen the sector.

According to the commissioner, the occasion tagged, Access to Care for the Formal Sector of the State Health Insurance Scheme, would translate to funding for the sustenance of the health sector.

Also speaking, the Director General, Cross River State Health Insurance Agency, Sir Godwin Iyala, said that the insurance translates to savings for the government workforce because the monthly insurance cost of one thousand naira monthly was affordable.

Iyala explained that to make healthcare accessible, 36 secondary medical facilities have been selected for the implementation of the scheme across the 18 council areas and the facilities are ready to offer quality accessible healthcare to the people of Cross River State.

While officially flagging off the distribution of insurance cards to workers, the Cross River Head of Service, Mr. Timothy Akwaji, described the scheme as having the potential to transform the health sector, noting that this had to do with affordable medical care to civil servants. Besides affordability, medical supplies and medicines as well as additional workforce would transform the sector positively.

Akwaji commended the Nigeria Labour Congress for supporting government’s effort to provide quality accessible healthcare to the citizens especially workers. “I commented the NLC for collaborating with the office of the Head of Service, Ministry of Health and the Health Insurance Agency to make the implementation of this policy a reality for workers.”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the resignation of his deputy, David Mabuza, thanking him for his “unwavering support” over the last five years.

Local reports say it comes as no surprise because Mr Mabuza had already announced earlier this month that he would be stepping down.

A cabinet reshuffle is expected next week once South Africa’s annual budget is announced.
