UNIPORTS Celebrates New International Ranking by Webometric

0

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has celebrated its new ranking as the fourth best university in Nigeria by Webometric, a reputable international ranking organisation.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, who announced the development at the weekend said the school under his administration had continued to make steady progress from its last 5th position to its new rank.

Georgewill noted that based on the criteria for the ranking, the institution topped other universities on openness, transparency and excellence.

He attributed the recent position to the collaborative efforts of the management team and other stakeholders adding that they would not rest until the school became the first in the country.

He said: “This is a kind of global ranking that consist of some parameters. And if you look at the current result, the indexes on openness, as in being known by people that the university exists, the University of Port Harcourt ranks number first, although we are number four overall but if you look at the indexes, on openness, it ranks number one higher than the university that took overall first.

“Also, the index of excellence, we are still number one. But we have a challenge on impact. We are a bit low on impact. Therefore, going forward, this university will do all it can to make sure we improve on our impact rating.

“This university, since we came onboard has focused on reason the university was established, which are teaching and learning, research, community service and entrepreneurship.”

Georgewill dismissed claims from some quarters that the school had withheld the graduation list of over 2000 students, stopping them from proceeding for their compulsory National Youth Service.

The VC insisted that the institution was not withholding anybody’s results and asked persons claiming to have genuine cases to approach their different departments to check their results.

He said: “In the past three days, some students have been talking about 2000 students on a graduating list that had not been released. There is no such list. There is no awaiting list anywhere.

“This administration ensures that every result that is ready, the Vice-Chancellor, executively, approves that result and wait for the Senate for ratification. So, there is no result anywhere because the VC is there to approve every result.

“I have interacted with some of them even on social media and I have told them to go to their departments. I asked one of the students if she had seen her spreadsheet or her Cumulative Grade Point (CGP) and she said she had not seen it. So I asked how did she know she had finished the programme, and said her course adviser told her that she had graduated.

“Any student, who has issues, please go to your department. Ask for your spreadsheet. A spreadsheet is the total summary of what one had done in one’s course programme. Bring the spreadsheet to the VC. If you said you have finished, go and get your spreadsheet, bring it to me.

“And I have also told the students that if they have any challenge in getting their spreadsheet, when you are in the department call me and I will come and you until you do that, you cannot go to the public and say they have graduated and they are holding your result.

“The issue is that some students have not gone to their departments to even see whether they are owing courses or not.”

Other officials of the university such as the DVC, Administration, Prof. Clifford Ofurum; DVC Academics, Prof. Kingsley Owete; DVC Research and Development, Prof. Siminialayi; Registrar, Dr. Gloria Chindah; Bursar, Felicia Ayuwo and the Librarian, Dr. Helen Emajealu spoke on their various contributions to UNIPORT’s new ranking.

Largest Teaching Union In Scotland Rejects Latest Pay Offer

0

Scotland’s largest teaching union has unanimously rejected the latest pay offer from the Scottish government and councils.

EIS general secretary Andrea Bradley described the proposal as another inadequate offer to Scotland’s teachers adding that the union would proceed with planned strike action.

The latest offer involved a 6% pay rise in the current year and a further 5.5% in the new financial year, which starts in April.

The government said it had found £156m to fund the two-year deal.

However, the EIS said the 6% raise for 2022-23 was insufficient, as inflation is currently at 10.5%.

The EIS, which represents the bulk of unionised teachers, has been demanding a 10% rise this year.

Bradley said the 6% offer for this year is only 1% less of a pay cut than that previously offered, twice, by the Scottish government and Cosla.

She added that the suggested year two component of 5.5% has not been negotiated via the appropriate forum, the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers (SNCT), at all.

She said the EIS was open to further discussions with the Scottish government and the local authority body Cosla to reach a resolution to the dispute.

The next national strike is due to be held on 28 February and 1 March.

The EIS is also planning to target action in a number of areas, including the Dunfermline constituency of Education Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville and the Glasgow Southside constituency of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Somerville had said previously the latest deal represented an overall 11.5% increase in April, and an accumulative increase of more than 30% since 2018.

She said the government had to make difficult decisions to find money for the pay offer.

UK Space Launch: Dislodged Fuel Filter Blamed For Rocket Failure

0

The first ever satellite mission from the UK failed to launch last month because a rocket fuel filter had become dislodged, Virgin Orbit says.

A rocket engine overheated in turn, leading to the loss of the rocket and satellites it was carrying.

Virgin Orbit sent up a jumbo jet carrying the rocket from Cornwall on 9 January. The aircraft returned safely.

CEO Dan Hart said the company would “proceed cautiously towards the launch” of its next rocket.

“The data is indicating that, from the beginning of the second stage first burn, a fuel filter within the fuel feedline had been dislodged from its normal position,” Virgin Orbit tweeted.

“Additional data shows that the fuel pump that is downstream of the filter operated at a degraded efficiency level, resulting in the Newton 4 engine being starved for fuel. Performing in this anomalous manner resulted in the engine operating at a significantly higher than rated engine temperature.

“The early thrust termination ended the mission, and the second stage and its payloads fell back to Earth, landing in the approved safety corridor in the Atlantic Ocean.”

Virgin Orbit is headquartered in Long Beach, California, but was founded by British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.

Syria Earthquake: Baby Aya Moved Amid Kidnap Fears

0

An orphaned Syrian baby born under the rubble of her collapsed home after last week’s earthquake has been moved to a “safe location” by a health authority.

The Afrin Health Directorate took the precautionary measure to protect the girl, Aya, from possible kidnapping and adoption fraud, a source told the BBC.

On Monday, there was a violent incident at the hospital in the opposition-held region where she was being treated.

A male nurse, accompanied by two armed men, allegedly beat the manager.

The head of the health directorate, Dr Ahmad Hajj Hassan, denied claims on social media that it was a foiled attempt to kidnap Aya.

“The kidnap allegations were a misunderstanding. This was a wholly internal hospital-related issue and had no connection whatsoever with the baby,” he told the BBC.

Thousands of people offered to adopt the baby last week, after her story was widely reported by local and international media.

However, the health directorate is determined to prioritise her welfare and act cautiously with the adoption process, according to the source.

Aya’s mother went into labour soon after their family home in the town of Jindayris was destroyed by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck southern Turkey on 6 February.

She died after giving birth to Aya, who was still connected by her umbilical cord when she was found by rescuers.

Dramatic footage shared on social media showed a man carrying the baby, covered in dust, after she was pulled from debris.

Aya’s father, four siblings and an aunt were also killed in the disaster.

Khalil al-Suwadi, a distant relative who was there when she was pulled to safety, brought the baby to the hospital in Afrin.

The paediatrician looking after her, Dr Hani Marouf, said Aya had arrived in “a bad state”. “She had bumps, bruises, she was cold and barely breathing,” he added.

She responded to treatment and by the next day her condition had stabilised.

The hospital’s manager, Khalid Attiah, said his wife was breastfeeding Aya alongside their own four-month daughter and that they would care for her until she was adopted.

Jindaryis, about 8km (5 miles) from the Turkish border, was one of the worst-hit towns in Syria. Some 200 buildings there have completely collapsed.

The White Helmets, whose volunteer first responders have been leading the search and rescue effort in opposition-held areas, say 517 bodies have been pulled from the rubble there.

The deaths represent almost a quarter of the total reported by the White Helmets and opposition authorities across the region, where 90% of the 4.6 million population needed humanitarian assistance even before the disaster.

Exploring Montale Tower, San Marino

0

Montale Tower is an important tower that overlooks the capital city of the Republic of San Marino, San Marino.

Known also as the third tower, it is the smallest one among the three important towers that are also featured on the San Marino flag and coat of arms, where the other two are Cesta and Guaita Towers.

Located on the highest point of Monte Titano, Montale Tower was built in 14 century in order to give a better protection against the possible invasion by the Italian family that ruled over Rimini, the Malatesta Family, however, at some point it was also used as a prison for which most likely it was intended to be.

The entrance door is located some 7 meters (23 feet) above the ground which points to the fact that it was intended to be used as a prison, since the architecture for that kind of structures at that time was done only for prisons.

The fortress tower has a pentagonal floor plan, and even though it is a standalone tower as opposed to a castle like complex, Montale is not open to the general public, but one can get as close as possible in order to admire this historic structure that is very important for the locals.

Restored in numerous occasions, the most recent one occurred in 1935 which improved its look, and made it more presentable. All in all, a definite national pride of the Sammarinese people, the Montale Tower shall continue to attract visitors in order to see this most impressive architecture that will be always waved on the national flag.

Women’s T20 World Cup: Australia Beat Bangladesh To Move Closer To Semi-Finals

2

Defending champions Australia took a step closer to the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup with an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh.

Chasing 108 in Gqeberha, they won with 10 balls to spare, with captain Meg Lanning hitting an unbeaten 48 after opener Alyssa Healy made 37.

Bangladesh made 107-7 with Nigar Sultana Joty scoring 57, while the returning Georgia Wareham claimed 3-20.

Australia go top of Group 1, while Bangladesh sit fourth after two losses.

Lanning’s side were solid in the field and were able to restrict Bangladesh after pace bowler Darcie Brown had opener Shamima Sultana caught, before bowling Murshida Khatun through the gate.

Joty built a 31-run stand with Sobhana Mostary, before Wareham, who was returning to international cricket after a 16-month knee injury, had the latter caught at mid-wicket.

Shorna Akter then made a painstaking 12 off 27 balls which slowed any momentum in the Bangladesh innings, despite Joty striking at more than a run-a-ball at the other end.

Shorna’s 12 was the second-highest score in the innings and that left Bangladesh well short of a match-winning total against Australia’s fearsome batting line-up.

Teenager Marufa Akter did have Beth Mooney caught at slip in the third over, before Lanning edged her fourth ball just short of slip.

From there Lanning and Healy grabbed control of the chase, putting on 69 for the second wicket, before Healy was caught in the covers off Shorna.

It was a stodgy chase from Australia, who largely scored in singles, only hitting four boundaries in the final 11.3 overs of the chase.

They comfortably got over the line though with Lanning and Ash Gardner, who sold for a joint-record of £320,000 for an overseas player in Monday’s Women’s Premier League auction, sharing an unbroken 33.

Australia play Sri Lanka in their next game on Thursday, while Bangladesh face New Zealand on Friday.

Ibadan Is New Home Of Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles

0

Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan

Nigeria, the 1996 Olympic champions,  will press ahead with their objective of a second Olympic football gold medal when they host Guinea in an U23 Africa Cup of Nations final qualifying fixture, first leg at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan on Wednesday, 22nd March.

A penalty in each half, and at opposing sides, guaranteed a stalemate in the first leg of the second-round fixture against Tanzania at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam in October last year, before a textbook free-kick by Timilehin Ogunniyi and another penalty by captain Success Makanjuola in the return in Ibadan saw the Eagles sail to the final round.

The clash with Guinea will determine, after both legs, which of Nigeria and Guinea will progress to the 4th Africa U23 Cup of Nations to be staged in Morocco later in the year.

Nigeria won the second edition of the Africa U23 Cup of Nations in Senegal in 2015, and then won the bronze medal at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in Brazil the following year.

Messi, Neymar To Leave PSG

0

Things fall apart among the trio of Neymar, Mbappe and Messi as the centre cannot hold

Paris Saint-German could be set to lose Lionel Messi and Neymar this summer after a heated fallout behind the scenes. Neymar was allegedly involved in a dressing room clash on Saturday following a 3-1 defeat to Monaco, where the Brazilian was critical of teammates, Vitinha and Hugo Ekitike.

This comes just weeks after Presnel Kimpembe said he was ‘not made aware’ of Kylian Mbappe replacing him as PSG’s vice-captain at the beginning of the campaign.

Mbappe then sent out a social media post calling for ‘unity’ following their recent drop in form, but it is clear that there are major problems in the French side’s dressing room.

There is an ongoing feud between Mbappe and Neymar and now both the Brazilian and Messi are both seeking exits from the Parc des Princes.

As per the report, former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos was forced to separate Mbappe and Neymar, and manager Christophe Galtier then staged a first-team meeting in which the pair were rebuked.

Messi, on the other hand, is now in the final months of his two-year contract with PSG, meaning he is now able to speak to other clubs regarding a free transfer at the end of the season.
