While commending UNICEF for its magnanimity as a strategic partner in quality education delivery, he restated that qualitative education is the bedrock of development in any nation, emphasising that the 21st century is a digital period.

He noted that the digital items presented to primary and junior secondary schools in the State would go a long way to aid the use of Nigerian Learning Passport (NLP) platform by teachers and students.

Recall that the NLP, established by UNICEF and endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with Lagos State, is an additional digital learning application for optimal teaching with a broad range of subject content to improve teaching and learning outcomes.

Meanwhile, Kayode Ojelade, a Senior Official in the Office of Education Quality Assurance, enlightened the students and teachers with short video clips on easy steps to take while using the devices on NLP platform for learning purposes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the presentation of the devices to primary schools, as well as junior and senior secondary schools in each educational district was done by Abayomi, with the Tutors-General/Permanent Secretaries of the districts, to Principals, representatives of parents’ forum and students.

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has assured the Flying Eagles of all necessary support and attention from the football-ruling body as the team continues its build-up to the AfricaU20 Cup of Nations finals in Egypt.

The NFF President gave the assurance on Sunday evening while visiting the Flying Eagles at their training tour base, Hotel Novotel in Mohammedia, Morocco shortly after the team’s 2-1 victory over their Congolesecounterparts in a friendly at the Complexe Sportif Sidi Mohammed.

“Let me use this opportunity to congratulate you all for emerging victorious against the Congolese team. It was a well-deserved victory because you played well. I believe there are a lot of good players here that will make the generality of Nigerians proud.

“The NFF under my leadership is working assiduously to ensure that you get all the support necessary for you to excel and that’s why I directed the secretariat to settle all your camping allowances which was done before your departure. I assure you that we are now working on how to motivate you in an extra way when you get to Cairo. All you have to do is go out there and make Nigerians proud.

“Getting to the semi-finals is paramount because that guarantees us a place in the FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia; so I urge you to seal that ticket and then get to the final and win the trophy.”

Responding on behalf of the team, Captain Daniel Bameyi thanked the President for the visit while reassuring him the players are battle-ready for the task ahead, and will do the needful by ensuring the team not only wins a World Cup ticket but goes all out for the trophy.

However, Emmanuel Uchegbu and Adams Olamilekan turned the game around for Nigeria with goals in the 66th and 74th minute to maintain the unbeaten run of this set of Flying Eagles in all matches and competitions.

Quake Relief: Qatar Donates 10, 000 World Cup Cabins To Turkey, Syria

0

Qatar will send Turkey and Syria 10,000 cabins and caravans used during the World Cup, which would now house people who lost their homes in a devastating earthquake, Qatari officials said Sunday.

“In view of the urgent needs in Turkey and Syria, we have taken the decision to ship our cabins and caravans to the region, providing much needed and immediate support to the people of Turkey and Syria,” a Qatari official said.

The mobile homes were used for a few weeks when Qatar hosted the football World Cup last year. Officials have indicated after the tournament they would be donated.

The first shipment is set to leave Doha port for Turkey on Monday, with further deliveries expected in the coming days, Qatari officials said, requesting anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

The Gulf state’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, visited Turkey on Sunday, the first foreign leader to do so since last week’s quake.

He stayed away from the affected zones, holding talks in Istanbul with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on ways Doha could help “mitigate this disaster”, the emir said in a tweet.

Qatar has one of the biggest foreign rescue teams in Turkey, with about 130 people on the ground. It has also sent 100 tonnes in aid.

The two countries have built increasingly strong ties in recent years.

Even before the quake, Qatar had agreed to inject billions of dollars into the struggling Turkish economy and invested in shopping malls and infrastructure projects.

Erdogan has been criticised at home over the government response to the earthquake.

Turkey is now desperate for housing after thousands of buildings were destroyed in the quake and tens of thousands more needing major repairs before they can be used again.

Oldest Schoolhouse For Colored Children In U.S. Moved To Museum

0

A building believed to be the oldest surviving schoolhouse for colored children in the US was hoisted onto a flatbed truck and moved a half-mile Friday to Colonial Williamsburg, a Virginia museum that continues to expand its emphasis on African American history.

Built 25 years before the American Revolution, the original structure stood near the college campus of William & Mary.

The pinewood building held as many as 30 students at a time, some of them free Black children studying alongside the enslaved.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to celebrate its slow-speed trip into the heart of the living history museum, which tells the story of Virginia’s colonial capital through interpreters and restored buildings.

Williamsburg is less than 10 miles from Jamestown, which England established in 1607.

The Bray School was established in 1760 at the recommendation of Benjamin Franklin, chairman of a London-based Anglican charity named after philanthropist Reverend Thomas Bray. The charity also set up schools in other cities, including New York and Philadelphia.

The curriculum ranged from spellers to the Book of Common Prayer. But even within the schools’ paternalistic framework, the education could still be empowering, perhaps even subversive.

The Williamsburg Bray School operated until 1774; only Philadelphia’s reopened after the Revolutionary War. The structure became a private home for many years before it was incorporated into William & Mary’s campus.

Historians believed they had identified the original Bray School building, but it wasn’t confirmed until 2021, through the use of dendrochronology, a scientific method that examines tree rings in lumber to determine the wood’s harvest date.

“This is a remarkable story of survival,” said Matthew Webster, Colonial Williamsburg’s executive director of architectural preservation and research. “And for us, it’s so important to put it back (to its original state) and tell the full and true story.”

Egypt’s Pyramids, Grand Museum Visitors To Get 1,500 More Hotel Rooms

0

Egypt’s Al-Ahram area real estate development project will add 1,500 hotel rooms to serve visitors to the Grand Museum and the pyramids, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced.

He said the idea came about in 2015, and “today we are reaping the result of this idea in partnership with the private sector.”

He added that the project will receive the state’s full support, and that his office will handle all relevant requests, issues and obstacles.

Separately, the Egyptian Cabinet denied reports about the closure of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, coinciding with the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum.

The media center of the Council of Ministers said it contacted the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which denied the reports.

The Egyptian Museum was accredited in the list of heritage sites of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the preliminary list of UNESCO.

Dubai’s Flying Taxis To Take Off By 2026 From 4 Stations Across City

Dubai again is planning for the takeoff of flying taxis in this futuristic city-state, offering its firmest details yet Monday for a pledged launch by 2026.

Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, announced the relaunched flying taxi program on social media Sunday, saying air taxis will begin flying in Dubai within three years.

Sheikh Mohammed revealed that he had approved designs for air taxi stations at the World Government Summit in Dubai this week.

The announcment highlighted the six-rotor electric flying taxi made by Joby Aviation of Santa Cruz, California, in the promotional video.

The inclusion of Joby Aviation aircraft is featured at a stand at the World Government Summit on Monday.

The announcment also included the city plans for four “vertiports” by Dubai International Airport, downtown Dubai, Palm Jumeirah archipelago and Dubai Marina. Those points will include two launching pads and four charging points for the flying taxis.

The Joby prototype can fly over 240 kilometers before needing a charge — something which would put Abu Dhabi and other areas of the country within range. It takes off and lands vertically, while its rotors tilt forward in flight. It has a maximum speed of 320 kph.

Saudi Arabia To Send Astronaut Team To International Space Station

Saudi Arabia will send the Kingdom’s first female astronaut and a male astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) during the second quarter of 2023.

Astronauts Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali AlQarni will join the crew of the AX-2 space mission, Axiom Space’s second all-private astronaut mission to the ISS.

The spaceflight is scheduled to launch from the United States to the International Space Station.

The Saudi Human Spaceflight Program includes the training of two more astronauts, Mariam Fardous and Ali AlGamdi, on all mission requirements.

Previously launched by the Saudi Space Commission (SSC), the Saudi Human Spaceflight Program is a collaboration with US company Axiom Space to train Saudi astronauts and bolster SSC’s space exploration.

The space mission is historic as it will make the Kingdom one of the few countries in the world that brings two astronauts of the same nationality aboard the ISS simultaneously.

Saudi Space Commission Chairman Abdullah Al-Swaha said the Kingdom’s leadership is keen to give unlimited support to the program, which aims to increase graduates’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and to nurture innovation in space sciences.

It also aims to improve the Kingdom’s capacity to conduct its own research, which will benefit the industry and the nation, and develop human capital by attracting skilled talents.

Following the wave of insecurity in some parts of the country, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has said elections would not hold in 240 polling units, spread across 28 states.

INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu disclosed this on Monday at a meeting with leaders of political parties.

INEC Plans Voting Centers For Two Million IDPs

Exploring Axel Towers, Denmark

0

Axel Towers is a modernist building that has impressive features, and it is located on Axeltorv Square, in the central part of the capital city of the Kingdom of Denmark, Copenhagen.

The entire structure consists of five round towers that are of different heights, and as they have from 5 to 15 floors, they encompass space for offices and a sky bar, as well as shops and cafés on the ground floor, and underground parking.

Covering an area of some 23,000 sq m (247,569 sq ft) above the ground, the building was designed by Lene Tranberg from the Danish architect firm Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekter, who brought her vision to what we see today, a vast space where people who live and work in the city are gathering in the offices, shops, eateries, public gardens and restaurants.

The excellent exterior façade consists of cladding that is a mixture between copper and zinc known as tombac, and it is a material that gradually changes its color and expression over time, ranging from gold to a light brown with some green shades.

Even though Axel Towers have an nontraditional and unconventional shape, they still successfully blend in and fit into the surrounding.

The construction began in 2013 and was completed in 2017, which was a lengthy process due to the design and geometry of the building, where the stairs have different curves and heights, making it impossible for the same construction process to be repeated from floor to floor.

Furthermore, with the unique shape and geometry of every tower, it was decided to cast all concrete on site, where sometimes 100 trucks or ready-mixed concrete would be delivered in one day.

Finally, the people of Copenhagen have something modern that is in the city center and yet differs from the regular city blocks, which is why it slowly becomes a new public attraction for the modern architect-savvy tourists to see in person whenever in Denmark’s capital.
