0

Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun remains the leading scorer in Ligue 1 after he netted his 15th goal of the season in a 4-0 win by Reims over Troyes.

Balogun found target in the 50th minute for his team’s third goal in this Ligue 1 Derby.

He drove into the box, literally shrugged off his marker before he slotted home.

He has now scored a goal more than Ben Yedder of AS Monaco and two more than Lacazette (Lyon) and Kylian Mbappe (PSG).

The striker is eligible to play for the Super Eagles through his parents; USA, where he was born and England.

INEC Has No Candidate In 2023 General Election- Yakubu

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured that it will not support any candidate or political party in the 2023 general election, as it is only interested in the electoral process.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman, INEC said this when he addressed Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) for the 2023 general election in Abuja.

Yakubu urged them to be committed to their oath of neutrality and allegiance to Nigeria.

He advised them not to see their job as service to INEC but to the country as a whole in which they were equal stakeholders.

“The commission is determined that the 2023 general election will be a best ever and you are the people that will help the commission to make it happen and help to ensure that Nigeria has a pleasant experience on election day.

“INEC is not a political party. INEC has no candidate in the election. Our only interest is in the processes. The choice of who becomes what in Nigeria is left to the Nigerian people to decide,” he said.

Yakubu described the work of the SPOs as critical to success of the 2023 general election, urging them to uphold integrity of the process.

“You are the people who supervise those who will work at the most important level, the Polling Units (PUs) level. That is the only place where voting take place.

“The collation officers at the polling units level are collating results from the PUs. When collation officers at the PU go to the local government level, they are collating results from the PUs.

“When it goes to the state level they are collating results from the PUs and when they come to Abuja, where we collate the presidential result it would have passed through all these processes.

“So, by the time the results come to Abuja, Nigerians would have known the outcome of the election,” he said.

Yakubu added: “Our responsibility is simply to collate. So you are playing very critical role. What will help you help the commission, help Nigerians and the electoral process is your Integrity as individuals.”

He said that the training was going on simultaneously in all states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He said that the training was a further reassurance to Nigerians of INEC readiness to conduct election on Feb. 25 and March 11.

“Today we are commencing the training of the most critical staff for the 2023 general election. Between today and tomorrow, we will train the PSOs.

“In the FCT we require 282 SPOs but we are training more than that no. We have added 70 to make it a total of 352 in case some are unable to make it on Election Day for one reason or another, we have a buffer.

“What is happening in FCT is happening in all the 36 days of the federation at the same time.

“Between today Feb. 11 and tomorrow Feb. 12, we will train the SPOs. Then on Tuesday the Feb. 14 to Thursday Feb. 16, we will train the Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers (APO) 1, 2 and 3,” he said.

Dispute Over Control Of $5 M. Van Gogh Painting Heads To Federal Appeals Court

0

A federal appeals court has agreed to hear a dispute over the control of a Vincent van Gogh painting recently displayed in an exhibition about the artist at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA).

In addition to the court granting an injunction on Monday, it also ordered the museum to continue to hold the 1888 painting Une Liseuse de romans while the case is pending.

The painting of a woman reading a book was part of the DIA’s exhibition “Van Gogh in America,” showcasing 74 pieces by the Dutch artist that were on loan from collectors and museums around the world.

Last month, as the show reached its end, Brokerarte Capital Partners LLC filed a lawsuit claiming ownership of the painting. Brokerarte said that it purchased Une Liseuse de romans for $3.7 million in 2017, giving temporary possession to a third party, and that it spent years trying to track its location before learning it was part of DIA’s exhibition. It is now estimated to be worth $5 million.

The museum, which said in its exhibition materials that the painting was on loan from a private collection in Brazil, has not been accused of wrongdoing.

Brokerarte is owned by Brazilian collector Gustavo Soter. The company wants the museum to return the painting.

But last month, a judge agreed with the DIA, saying that the museum had done its due diligence to assure that the work was not stolen. The museum has invoked the Seizure Act, a federal law that governs the international sharing of art. The DIA has argued that upholding it is crucial to ensure that foreign owners continue to lend important works to US institutions.

The Association of Art Museum Directors also urged the appeals court to dismiss the case.

Real Madrid Beat Al Hilal, Win Record Fifth Club World Cup

Real Madrid’s French forward Karim Benzema (C) celebrates with the trophy at the end of the FIFA Club World Cup final football match between Spain’s Real Madrid and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal

Real Madrid lifted the Club World Cup for a record fifth time with a pulsating 5-3 win over Al Hilal on Saturday in Morocco.

Vinicius Junior and Fede Valverde struck twice each, while Karim Benzema also scored on his return from injury in Madrid’s spectacular victory over their Saudi Arabian opponents.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who qualified as Champions League winners last season, had far too much attacking quality for their opponents to handle.

Madrid’s emphatic triumph at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium secured their second piece of silverware of the season, after winning the European Super Cup in August.

It also provided welcome respite from their La Liga campaign, where they sit eight points behind rivals Barcelona, who also beat them in the Spanish Super Cup final in January.

Madrid also won three Intercontinental Cups in 1960, 1998 and 2002 — a match between European and South American champions, which merged with the Club World Cup in 2005.

“We are very happy, for the eighth time Madrid are champions of the world, it was what we had to do,” Ancelotti told Telecinco.

“We’re happy, it was a good game. We had a lot of quality up front.

“I think we were good up front, with Vinicius, Karim, Valverde, who got two, up top the team had mobility and quality.”

Ancelotti brought Benzema back into the starting line-up after he had missed the semi-final win over Al Ahly with a thigh injury, with Rodrygo dropping to the bench.

The 35-year-old striker created the opening goal for Vinicius with a short pass to send the Brazilian winger through on goal.

After a frustrating spell in Spain because of racist abuse from the stands and opponents targeting him on the pitch, Vinicius was able to enjoy himself in Morocco, netting in both of Madrid’s matches and crowned player of the tournament.

The same went for the team as a whole, glad to take a short break from their domestic battle with Xavi Hernandez’s Barcelona to earn the title of world champions.

Valverde rifled the second goal home through defender Ali Albulayhi’s legs, leaving goalkeeper Abdullah Al-Mayoof unsighted.

Former Porto striker Moussa Marega pulled one back for the 2021 Asian Champions League winners, sliding a shot past Andriy Lunin, who should have done more to keep it out.

The Ukrainian goalkeeper, standing in for the injured Thibaut Courtois, was celebrating his birthday but despite the win he had a game to forget.

For a short period it seemed the Saudi Arabian side were going to truly test their more illustrious rivals, but Madrid stepped up a gear in the second half and secured an entertaining victory.

– Turning on the style –

Vinicius set up Benzema early in the second half with a stunning cross using the outside of his boot and the French forward made no mistake from close range.

Uruguayan midfielder Valverde netted his second goal after a slick combination with defender Dani Carvajal, finding his form and goals again after a dip in form.

Al Hilal pulled another goal back through ex-Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto, who dinked an effort past Lunin.

Vinicius quickly hit back with a clinical strike but Vietto pounced with a clever turn and finish to cut the distance to two goals again.

Marega sent a good chance wide with 10 minutes to go, letting Madrid off the hook when he might have forced a nervy finale.

Earlier Brazilian Copa Libertadores winners Flamengo finished third with a 4-2 win over Egypt’s Al Ahly.

Djokovic Seeks Special Permission For USA Entry

0

Novak Djokovic has applied for special permission to enter the United States to play at the Indian Wells and Miami Open, his brother Djordje has revealed.

The requirement for foreign air travellers is not expected to be lifted before main draw action at Indian Wells kicks off on March 9. The Miami Open runs from March 22 to April 2.

World number one Djokovic was named this week on the entry list for Indian Wells, where he is a five-time champion.

“Novak has to obtain special permission as the U.S. is still denying entry to non-vaccinated persons, which is simply unbelievable as the whole world is open and sports events feature vaccinated and non-vaccinated athletes alike,” Djordje told Serbian news agency Tanjug.

“Novak has submitted all the required documentation and a request, and the directors of the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments have publicly said Novak is needed at those tournaments and that they want him to come.

“There are only a few days to go before a decision is made and what remains for us to do is hope for a positive outcome.” Last month, Indian Wells tournament director Tommy Haas said it would be a “disgrace” if Djokovic was not allowed to compete at Indian Wells and other tournaments in the United States this year.

Djokovic missed last year’s Australian Open and was deported from the country due to his vaccine status. He regained entry into the tournament this year and won it to claim a record-tying 22nd Grand Slam title.

The 35-year-old has previously said he would miss Grand Slams rather than receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

Olympics Row Deepens As 35 Countries Demand Ban For Russia And Belarus

2

A group of 35 countries, including the United States, Germany and Australia, will demand that Russian and Belarusian athletes are banned from the 2024 Olympics, the Lithuanian sports minister said on Friday, deepening the uncertainty over the Paris Games.

The move cranks up the pressure on an International Olympic Committee (IOC) that is desperate to avoid the sporting event being torn asunder by the bloody conflict unfolding in Ukraine.

“We are going in the direction that we would not need a boycott because all countries are unanimous,” Jurgita Siugzdiniene said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy took part in the online meeting attended by 35 ministers to discuss the call for the ban, pointing out 228 Ukrainian athletes and coaches died as a result of the Russian aggression.

“If there’s an Olympics sport with killings and missile strikes, you know which national team would take the first place,” he told the ministers.

“Terror and Olympism are two opposites, they cannot be combined.”

British sports minister Lucy Frazer said on Twitter that the meeting was very productive.

“I made the UK’s position very clear: As long as Putin continues his barbaric war, Russia and Belarus must not be represented at the Olympics,” she wrote.

Lee Satterfield, Assistant Secretary of State who leads the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, also participated in the meeting.

“The Assistant Secretary outlined that the United States will continue to join a vast community of nations in our unwavering support for the people of Ukraine and hold the Russian Federation accountable for its brutal and barbaric war against Ukraine, as well as the complicit Lukashenka regime in Belarus,” a U.S. Department of State spokesperson said.

“We will continue to consult with our independent National Olympic Committee – the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee – on next steps, and look forward to greater clarity by the IOC on their proposed policy toward Russia and Belarus.”

With war raging in Ukraine, the Baltic States, Nordic countries and Poland had called on  international sports bodies to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing in the Olympics.

Russia launched a wave of attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure in the cities of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia on Friday morning as Ukrainian officials said a long-awaited Russian offensive was under way in the east.

“We know that 70% of Russian athletes are soldiers. I consider it unacceptable that such people participate in the Olympic Games in the current situation, when fair play obviously means nothing to them,” Czech foreign minister Jan Lipavsky said after meeting the heads of the Czech IOC and the national sports agency.

BOYCOTT

Ukraine has threatened to boycott the games if Russian and Belarusian athletes compete and Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk has said Russians will win “medals of blood, deaths and tears” if allowed to take part.

Such threats have revived memories of boycotts in the 1970s and 1980s during the Cold War era that still haunt the global Olympic body today, and it has called on Ukraine to drop them.

However, Polish Sports Minister Kamil Bortniczuk said that a boycott was not on the table for now.

“It’s not time to talk about a boycott yet,” he told a news conference, saying there were other ways of putting pressure on the IOC that could be explored first.

He said that most participants had been in favour of an absolute exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes.

“Most voices – with the exception of Greece, France, Japan – were exactly in this tone,” he said.

He said that creating a team of refugees that would include Russian and Belarusian dissidents could be a compromise solution.

NEUTRALS

The IOC has opened the door for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutrals.

It has said a boycott will violate the Olympic Charter and that its inclusion of Russians and Belarusians is based on a UN resolution against discrimination within the Olympic movement.

Anette Trettebergstuen, Norway’s Minister of Culture and Equality, also said it was “far too early” to think about a boycott but added that it was “strange and provocative” for the IOC to consider allowing Russian athletes to compete.

“In a Russian context, there is no difference between sport and politics, and any sports performance is pure propaganda,” Trettebergstuen told Norwegian newspaper VG.

“Saying the athletes should be able to compete as neutrals… Neutrality is not possible. It’s a dead end.”

Some 18 months before the competition is due to start, the IOC is desperate to calm the waters so as not to jeopardize the Games’ message of global peace and deliver a huge hit to income.

While Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of host city Paris, said Russian athletes should not take part, Paris 2024 organisers, who last week said they would abide by the IOC’s decision on who would take part in the Games, declined to comment.

The Russian sports ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment. An IOC spokesperson said they would not comment “on interpretations from individual participants of a meeting whose overall content is unknown”.

Diego Cocca is unveiled as new Mexico coach – Centro de Alto Rendimiento, Mexico City, Mexico – February 10, 2023 Diego Cocca during press conference

Mexico have appointed Argentine Diego Cocca as head coach on a deal until 2026 following the exit of Gerardo Martino, the country’s soccer federation (FMF) announced on Friday.

The 50-year-old Cocca takes over after Martino’s contract expired after Mexico were eliminated in the World Cup group stage last year for the first time since 1978.

“Diego showed his interest in coaching the national team and we are happy to unveil him,” said Rodrigo Ares de Parga, Mexico’s Director of National Teams.

“He is a hard-working man, he knows Mexican football, he is a great tactician, he has great team management and we believe that starting in March we are going to start getting good results.”

The appointment comes a day after Mexican league side Tigres UANL, who Cocca joined just three months ago, announced the termination of the coach’s one-year contract after he told the club he had decided to take the Mexico job.

“For me it’s not just any job to be the coach of this country that has given me so much, that has opened doors for me and made me grow as a professional and again as a coach,” Cocca told reporters.

“To have the chance to help Mexico grow its national team is a privilege and an opportunity that I could not miss.”

The former Racing Club boss is known in Mexican soccer for winning back-to-back league titles with Atlas in 2021 and 2022, ending the club’s 70-year title drought.

Mexico are aiming to qualify for the CONCACAF Nations League finals in June, while they will also look to reclaim the Gold Cup, which runs from June 24-July 16 in the United States, after losing their title to the U.S. in the 2021 final.

The U.S., Mexico and Canada will co-host the 2026 World Cup.

Laliga: Zidane Gives Real Madrid Condition To Replace Ancelotti As Manager

0

French boss, Zinedine Zidane has given Real Madrid president Florentino Perez one condition to fulfil before he (Zidane) could return as the club’s manager.

The Frenchman would be willing to make a return to Santiago Bernabeu only if Perez agrees to sign Rayan Cherki, according to French media.

The former Real Madrid player and manager is keen to work with the French sensation.

Zidane is said to have told Perez he would return to the club as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti if he is guaranteed the signing of Rayan Cherki.

Cherki is widely seen as one of the most exciting young players in European football at the moment and Zidane is a huge fan of the versatile forward.

Ancelotti’s future at the Spanish giants is not certain despite the veteran manager leading Los Blancos to La Liga and Champions League success last season.

Real Madrid are second in the league, eight points behind their arch-rivals Barcelona.
