Exploring Rhyolite, U.S.A.

0

Rhyolite is known as a ghost town that is located in the Bullfrog Hills of the Nye County in the State of Nevada, within the United States of America.

When it was confirmed that there is gold among the quartz in the local mines, the people started coming in where by 1906 the town had all the promising indicators of permanence with largest population in the area.

Buildings sprang very quickly, where the highest one, John S. Cook and Co. Bank, had three floors and it was considered to have costed its owners some 90,000 USD.

In addition to that one, there were plenty of hotels, stores, one school for around 250 children, ice plant, two electric plants, a hospital, and even foundries and machine shops.

The name for this abandoned ghost town comes from the igneous rock which is composed of light-colored silicates, usually buff to pink and occasionally light gray, most commonly known as rhyolite.

Throughout the years, the town developed very quickly, and in 1907 it had even concrete sidewalks, electric lights, water mains, telephone and telegraph lines, daily and weekly newspapers, a monthly magazine, police and fire departments.

Unfortunately, in 1907 there was a slight decline in the growth of the town, as well as the finances from the mine, where in February 1908, a committee of minority stockholders, suspecting that the mine was overvalued, hired a British mining engineer to conduct an inspection whose report was unfavorable, causing for the further decline.

Even though the mine was profitable by 1909, after that no new ore was discovered, and by 1910 the mine operated at a loss for most of the year.

It was the decision of the owners to close it for good in 1911, and sadly by 1916 the lights in the city went out forever.

Since then, Rhyolite has been left on the goodwill of the weather conditions, which could do more damage to the structure which are already before collapse.

There were some cases where the remaining infrastructure became the source of building materials for other towns and mining camps, such as the Miner’s Union Hall of Rhyolite which was turned into the Old Town Hall of Beatty.

Maintained by the Bureau of Land Management, Rhyolite has an indelible charm and appeal with rich heritage, that impresses plenty of visitors.

The ghost town was even used in some of Hollywood movies, where some structures were somewhat restored.

All in all, Rhyolite is a perfect example of how one small town can grow into a commercialized place, so that in very short time would decline and be left into ruins, making it a perfect getaway place for visitors to get a glimpse of the life of the former mining communities.

A resident, Bakura Ibrahim, said the insurgents positioned themselves under a tree and stood by the roadside with bags of old naira notes. he said “we left Monguno at about 12 noon.

As we approached Mairari, there were no existing checkpoints in the area; we were apprehensive.

ICPC Arrests Woman Offering New Naira Notes For Sale

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arrested a woman, Omoseyin Esther, with the Twitter handle Simisola of Lala, offering new naira notes for sale on social media.

The arrest was a result of intelligence received which led the ICPC operatives to seek out and promptly arrest the suspect.

Esther, a social media “serial entrepreneur” who deals in skincare, sales of fuel, facilitation of foreign travels through visa acquisitions, and other businesses, seized the opportunity of the scarcity of the new naira notes to openly market the new notes.

According to the spokesperson, ICPC, Azuka Ogugua, “It is believed she is in collusion with key elements in the financial services sector diverting the newly released notes away from banking halls and payment channels into a “black market”

Ogugua said the suspect is currently in ICPC detention and is helping the Commission with its findings on the criminal trading of the naira and the attendant scarcity and negative economic outcomes being caused by the action.

“The action is in furtherance of the collaboration between CBN ICPC and EFCC in implementing the new cashless policy and naira redesign”, she said.

Actors’ Guild Re-Launches Health Insurance Scheme For Members

0

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) on Monday re-launched a health management and insurance scheme for its members.

Emeka Rollas, National President, AGN, during the launch of the health insurance scheme in Lagos, emphasized the need for actors to take their health seriously.

Rollas noted that other juicy welfare packages had also been put in place for members.

He said it was so discouraging to note the apathy and lackadaisical attitude guild members had shown toward welfare packages including their health issues.

He said that in view of this, the guild had designed a week-long health and wellness sensitisation programme aimed at creating awareness to enable members enrol on the health management scheme and insurance policy.

He said Feb. 11 had been slated for a health walk and free medical check-up at Teslim Balogun Stadium from 7a.m. to 5p.m.

According to him, this will also feature health management and insurance renewals, lectures, healthy and complete diet tutorials.

“This is to help make healthy life style a priority,” he said.

Nigeria Attains 100% Broadband Penetration

0

President Muhammadu Buhari says that the Federal Government has achieved 100 per cent broadband penetration across Nigeria.

The president said this in Abuja on Tuesday at a Digital Economy Conference tagged: “Promoting a Vibrant Digital Economy, A Catalyst for Economic Growth in Nigeria”.

According to reports, the conference was organised by the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).

Represented by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isah Patami, the President said the figure was contrary to reports that the country had achieved 43 per cent penetration only.

According to him, reports on 43 per cent penetration is obsolete.

“One of the richest persons in the world announced that Nigeria out of the 54 African countries has outstanding broadband.

“As I speak to you today the broadband penetration in Nigeria is 100 per cent,” Buhari said.

He said that the Federal Government performed excellently in terms of achieving wider broadband for Nigerians.

According to him, from 23 per cent coverage in 2019, this administration increased the broadband by 77 per cent in 2022 and 100 per cent in 2023.

“As at today, the broadband can be accessed everywhere in the country whether in the urban area, rural area or desert.

“We are the first African country to attain this and the only one so far,” the President said.

Buhari further said the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy had been rated very high by an independent assessment.

He said, “70 per cent is distinction and the digital sector has surpassed it.

“We delivered excellently in all the eight priority areas in the sector.

“For instance on pillar number one, which is broadband penetration, we achieved 134 per cent,  pillar number two, which is 4G penetration, we achieved 127 per cent.

“Furthermore, we delivered 99 per cent on the third pillar, the fourth pillar, which has to do with national identity, we achieved 94 per cent.

“On the fifth pillar which is quarterly revenue generation, we moved from generating N51 billion in three months to N408 billion in three months”.

The President further said, “on the sixth pillar we achieved 103 per cent result, seventh pillar we achieved 111 per cent and the eight pillar we achieved 137 per cent.”

On call by the President of NACCIMA for inclusion of the organised private sector in the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the president said the provision had been made.

He asked NACCIMA to forward the names of their representatives for consideration.

Ide Udeagbala, National President of NACCIMA, said the conference was to among other things promote the technology ecosystem in Nigeria and establish potentials of the digital economy for job creation.

He also said the conference was being organised to identify the opportunities that existed in the technology industry and grow them by attracting local and foreign investments to Nigeria.

Udeagbala further said the conference would help identify challenges impeding development of the technology industry and encourage government to enunciate policies that would build on existing laws among others.

He said part of the discussions at the conference would also centre around establishing digital hubs in the six geo-political zones.

This according to him will give opportunities to the rural areas, promote start-ups and encourage innovations in the industry while discovering technology savvy experts.

FG Moves To Train 250,000 Persons On Data Privacy, Protection

0

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to train 250,000 data protection officers on enhanced management of data across organisations to safeguard the privacy of citizens.

Dr Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, (NDPB) made this known during a capacity building workshop for data protection officers in the public sector, in Abuja.

He said that there is need for data protection officers operating in the public sector to understand the difference between data security and data privacy as they carry out their duties.

He bemoaned the poor statistics of data expert operating in Nigeria, adding that the Bureau would not relent in its drive to build capacities and train data protection officers in the country.

“We will develop a pool of competent data protection experts in the country. This is first set of data protection observers that we are training so far.

“We have gone round ministries and parastatals, we have trained them. We have done for the Attorney-General office, we have done for NTA, we have done for VON, we have done for Federal Polytechnic Nekede, we are working with the office of the secretary general to conduct their own.

“We are also working with the Federal Ministry of Health. We are pulling different people from ministries and departments and this is the first batch and I want to really congratulate all of them.

“Data privacy protection ecosystem is still emerging globally.

“In Nigeria the number of data processors and controllers that we have identified are over 500,000 and by our own estimates, those who are experts are not up to 10, 000, so there is a huge gap of over 490, 000 jobs available,” he said.

For his part, the Head, Legal Enforcement and Regulations, NDPB, Babatunde Bamigboye, said that the training is part of its activities to commemorate this year’s Data Privacy Day, celebrated yearly on Jan. 28.

Bamigboye said that the training which would be in series, is aimed at ensuring that the officers are placed at per with their counterparts in the western world.

On enforcement mechanisms to checkmate data breach on data protection by any organisation, he said that the Bureau would continue to create awareness and build capacities of data protection officers in the country.

“The bureau is currently investigating two banks because of data privacy issues. We realize that it is possible that organisations could have data privacy or protection policies at the very top.

“Sometimes they have third parties and these policies do not go down the strata. We have enforcement, though it is an emerging thing but we still have to create awareness even though ignorance of the law is not an excuse,” he said.

A participant, Patrick Odeh, from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) appreciated the Bureau for the training, adding that the knowledge gained from the training would make them more effective as they handle data issues.

“I believe that what NDPB is trying to do is to ensure that we understand what it takes to be able to manage our records, manage the data, and also put the subject data into consideration,” he said.

Buhari: Foreign Groups bent on Destroying Nigeria behind Boko Haram

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has commented on the Boko Haram situation in the country. This time around the president stated that he suspects international groups that want to destroy Nigeria are behind the plight of Boko Haram we have faced, adding that it is fraudulent even by the name given to the terror group.

He said this while delivering a keynote address at a lunch organized by the Kano State Government after the commissioning of some Federal and State projects.

“When we came into power in 2015, Boko Haram was in control in 13 of the 27 local governments of the state, only four were with the Government then.

more so, half of the local Governments in Yobe state were with Boko Haram.

“Today with the help of a patriotic and dedicated governor in Borno state the local Governments have been recovered.

“what is Boko haram? it is very fraudulent. I suspect there’s an international group that wants to destroy Nigeria. if not, how can Boko (western education) be haram? the president said

Buhari, who was in Kano for a state visit, praised his administration’s performance, particularly how it has been able to provide more infrastructure with less funding than the previous regime.

“Recall that between 1999 and 2019, the NNPC produced 2.1 billion barrels per day at a cost of $100 per barrel. So Nigeria was earning $100 per barrel for producing 2.1 million barrels per day but look at our infrastructure.

“Some of them are 60 years old, look at our power sector, what can advance without infrastructure?

“However, those in power during those years went around not only in Nigeria but around the world saying they were wonderful but couldn’t explain what they had done.

“But the cost of petroleum today has gone down to about 37 dollars per barrel which only 1.5 million barrels is produced and yet we have put in place a lot of infrastructure. “Look at what we’ve accomplished,” Buhari added.

Finally, he expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support and cooperation, as well as the opportunity to serve them.

Nollywood Actress, Rahama Sadau, Calls On Govt To Urgently Fund Movie Industry

0

Nollywood actress and movie producer, Rahama Sadau, has called on the federal government to urgently fund the movie industry to boost the nation’s economy.

According to her, the paucity of funds is one major setback affecting the industry.

The actress stated this at the premiere of a Netflix Limited Series, ‘The Plan’ at the weekend in Abuja.

The Plan portrays the culture of northern Nigeria, with a focus on a storyline based on trust and loyalty.

The series directed by Dimbo Atiya, and produced by Sadau and Safina Mohamed, has set a record in the movie industry having the first movie where all the Executive producers are from northern Nigeria.

Sadau said: “Hugely, lack of funding has been a major setback for the entire industry. We have a lot of talents. We have a lot of creatives, and we have no or little funding anywhere.

“We have almost 90 per cent of filmmakers who bring in their money to produce films. So, what I will always plead is for government involvement.

“We have seen Avatar, Wakanda. It is not just one person that made the movie, there are a lot of producers.

“The government should look into the creative industry so that we can be a greater industry,” she said.

On the production, she said: “The movie means a lot to northern Nigeria, it means that we are now telling our stories to the global audience and rather than just telling our stories to ourselves, not just northern Nigeria, but Nollywood as a whole because any movie on a platform like this deserves an acknowledgement.”

One of the Executive Producers of The Plan, Sefyna Mohammed, said the movie is the first Hausa movie on Netflix where all the executive producers are from the north, adding that the movie portrayed the culture of northern Nigeria.

London’s National Gallery Buys Record-Setting Cavallino, Once Owned By Met Trustee

0

London’s National Gallery acquired a painting by 15th-century Italian artist Bernardo Cavallino at Sotheby’s in New York, where it was set a record for $3.9 million (with buyer’s premium).

The painting, which depicts its titular subject Saint Bartholomew in a seated pose holding a knife, is believed to have produced between 1640 and 1645. The inclusion of the knife foreshadows the apostle’s martyrdom, as he was flayed alive.

During the sale, held on January 27, the museum won the Cavallino painting on a hammer price of $3.2 million; it was sold by developer Mark Fisch, a prominent Old Masters collector and a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The result surpassed the artist’s 2018 record of $532,457, paid for his Saint Cecilia (1645) at Christie’s London.

Saint Bartholomew was acquired with funds raised from the museum’s U.S. trustee group, American Friends of the National Gallery, according to a report by the Art Newspaper. In a statement announcing the purchase, the National Gallery described the work as “one of the largest and most splendid works Bernardino Cavallino ever painted and dates to the 1640s, when the Neapolitan artist was at the height of his artistic powers.”

When an image of the recently auctioned work was published in a Sotheby’s catalogue in 1988, it was then attributed to an anonymous “Spanish School” artist and sold for a price around $280,000.

After passing through the hands of several dealers, it later entered into Fisch’s collection, which he assembled with his partner, Rachel Davidson. Their holdings had been the subject of a contentious divorce proceeding that began earlier this year.
