Don Seeks Inclusion Of Social Studies In School Curriculum

0

A Professor in the Department of Social Sciences Education, University of Ilorin, North Central Nigeria, Abdulraheem Yusuf says that for Nigeria to survive as a nation, it must include social studies curriculum at all levels of education system.

Professor Yusuf stated this while delivering the 223 Inaugural Lecture of the Institution, titled ‘Socialising or Civicising the Citizens: The Quandary of a Failing Nation.’

He emphasised that one major means of inculcating and cultivating discipline among the citizens is by reintroducing social studies at all levels of education, to make Nigeria grow into a vibrant county.

He said that “a disciplined citizen observes the laws of the land without being noticed and adheres to solid moral principles.”

According to him, teaching social studies seems to be the only way to resolve Nigeria’s national problems for political and economic agreements.

“It will neutralise geographical and ethnic diversities and result in the establishment of a united Nigeria with responsible leadership.

“Without committed, disciplined and purpose-driven leadership at all levels, no action plan will succeed, no matter how noble it seems. We commonly see that the majority of those in positions of power lack the necessary skills and those who have those skills are not in positions of authority. This circumstance has resulted in inept leadership and its attendant frustrated citizenry,” the Lecturer explained.

According to him, Nigerians break laws just because they want to take undue advantage of other people.

Professor Yusuf said; “In order to gain power, we betray ourselves, we renew our hopelessness at every election, we sell our votes to elect mediocre, promise breakers and ineffective leaders, we provide questionable certificates to attain power, we jump or shunt queues and we hoard necessities to drive up prices, as evidenced by the frequent petrol scarcity.”

Professor Yusuf described a study of Social studies as the subject that covers national values, leadership, followership, unity, equity, conscience and integrity, as well as truthfulness and justice.

He said that these are effective tools for national development and also serve as powerful inspirations for Nigerians to support the nation’s unity, consciousness and peace.

The Lecturer explained further that “carefully chosen social issues such as drug trafficking, insecurity, poverty, unemployment, cultism and human trafficking are addressed in the subject stated that it not only throws light on these challenges but also offers solutions as students who acquire these value constructs grow into more receptive and responsible citizens.”

The Educationist said having a solid understanding of social studies would help elect trustworthy and responsible people to positions of authority while students who have taken social studies classes will make better leaders and be expected to work to better the lives of others.

While making a comparison between social studies and civic education, Prof. Yusuf said that since the start of civil education in Nigeria in September 2007, our rights have received more attention than our values as citizens of the country.

He said that “Civic education attempts to teach people democratic values, norms and legal practices. It helps students realize the idea that those who lack literacy or have limited awareness of their legal rights and obligations would be unable to exercise them.”

The educationist, however, recommended that Social studies should be reintroduced, taught effectively and diligently studied at all levels of education, while its curriculum must be reviewed regularly to account for the change in society, content, and techniques to meet the changing requirements of individuals and the nation.

Passion Of The Christ Sequel ‘Resurrection’ Set To Begin Filming This Spring

1

The sequel to “The Passion of the Christ” is set to begin filming this spring and will depict the days immediately following Christ’s crucifixion.

It was reported that actor, director and producer Mel Gibson is expected to begin production on the highly anticipated sequel “Resurrection” in the next few months.

Unlike “Passion,” which focused on the graphic crucifixion of Jesus Christ, “Resurrection” is expected to explore the three days between His death and resurrection.

“‘Resurrection’ would focus on the twenty-four hours encompassing Jesus’ passion and the events that occurred three days between his crucifixion and resurrection,” it added.

Jim Caviezel will reprise his role of Jesus, and Maia Morgenstern as Mary, Christo Jivkov as John, and Francesco De Vito as Peter.

As previously reported, Gibson, who spoke at a Crusade in 2016, said he has been working on the project for several years.

Then, in 2020, Caviezel shared details about the second installment of the blockbuster hit, telling Breitbart News that he had received a new draft of “Resurrection.”

“Mel Gibson just sent me the third picture, the third draft. It’s coming,” he said at the time.

“It’s called ‘The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection.’ It’s going to be the biggest film in world history,” he declared.

Despite its lack of industry support, the first film, released in 2004, earned a staggering $612 million worldwide with a production budget of just $30 million.

In the same interview, Caviezel was asked if he had encountered politically-driven blacklisting following his portrayal of Jesus in “The Passion of the Christ.”

“I had no choice. I had to defend it. I had to fight to survive. The film exploded. It was off the charts,” Caviezel responded. “You’d think, ‘Oh, you’re going to work a lot.’ No, I didn’t. I was no longer on the studio list. That was gone. … Because of what I do as an actor — that’s my skill — it was given to me from God. I didn’t give it to myself, but it’s something in which I have a great range.”

Caviezel went on to say that he held to his convictions because he believed his “faith was much bigger than the industry and Hollywood, and bigger than the Republican or Democratic Party or any of that.”

Caviezel and Gibson haven’t revealed any other details about the sequel, but in the past, the “Persons’ of Interest” actor revealed minor details about the project following one of his conversations with Gibson.

FIFA President Infantino Lands In Algeria For CHAN Opener

1

The president of the globe’s ruling football body FIFA, Gianni Infantino has arrived in Algeria ahead of the opener of the 2023 African Nations Football championship CHAN that will pit host Algeria against Libya at the Nelson Mandela stadium in Algiers this Friday.

The Chan, Africa’s second nations flagship tournament reserved solely for players plying their trade in their domestic championships.

FIFA’s supremo Gianni Infantino expressed delight after arriving in the North African nation.

“I’m very happy to be in Algiers where I will take part in the inauguration of the Nelson Mandela stadium,” Infantino said.

“I will also be meeting with Algeria’s president, the Algerian football community as well as stakeholders of African football.”

“I’m also here for the CHAN which begins on Friday. It is a very important moment for African football” Fifa’s president mentioned.

The 2023 Chan in Algeria will be the first event that will see 18 teams rival for continental recognition after the number of participants was increased from 16 to 18.

The Chan which is in its seventh edition was lastly won by Morocco in 2021 in Cameroon

Lionel Messi May Team Up With Odion Ighalo In Saudi Arabia

0

Lionel Messi, Odion Ighalo and Wilfred Ndidi confronting the referee at the Nigeria-Argentina World Cup clash in 2018. Messi and Ighalo may become clubmates later in 2023.

If on-going speculations are anything to go by, Super Eagles’ former hit-man, Odion Ighalo may play in the same team with the legendary Lionel Messi at the Al-Hilal.

Speculations are rife that Lionel Messi’s father who is also the player’s agent, Jorge Messi, is in Riyadh  for talks with Al-Hilal about the possibility of his son joining the Saudi club on a staggering £245m-a-year contract.

Messi’s PSG are due in Saudi Arabia for a friendly match against Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.

Both Messi and Ronaldo have dominated the football space in the past 15 years and it appears that the rivalry may shift to Saudi Arabia, who appears are taking cue from Qatar to use football as public relations tool.

it has emerged that Al Hilal, which Ighalo plays for, are keen to bring Messi when his contract expires at PSG in June.

Like it happened to Cameroon’s captain, Vincent Aboubakar when Ronaldo was brought in by Al Nassr, it is hoped the Ighalo would not be sacrificed for Messi at Al Hilal.

Ighalo at the moment is one of the seven foreign players at Al Hilal.

“They would be willing to pay him $300m-a-year (£245m) to get a deal over the line”, a Spanish news outlet reported.

Nasser Al-Attiyah, a relative of the Emir of Qatar, has further fueled speculations that he will move to the Middle East after reportedly stating: ‘Messi, his next club after his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, will be Saudi Arabia.

Al-Hilal are currently banned from adding players until the next transfer window, but they want Messi to sign now ahead of a potential move in the summer.

Messi’s father has arrived in the Saudi capital to discuss the proposed move, as reported by Saudi media.

, which would see Messi renew his on-pitch rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo joined fellow Saudi side Al-Nassr last month and will receive £175m per year during his time with the club.

Should Messi accept Al-Hilal’s proposal, he will earn significantly more than Ronaldo and also get the chance to play against his great nemesis once more.

Messi and Ronaldo enjoyed a historic rivalry while competing against each other for Barcelona and Real Madrid between 2009 and 2018, when they established themselves as the two best players on the planet.

Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr appeared to have signalled the end of their rivalry, but Messi could now follow him to Saudi.

Clashes between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal are considered Saudi’s equivalent of El Clasico, and seeing Messi and Ronaldo on opposite sides would only add extra spice to the occasion.

The legendary paid could also play against one another when PSG travel to Riyadh to take on an All-Star XI featuring players from Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal on January 19.

Morocco May Make U-Turn Over CHAN Withdrawal

1

Morocco’s English newspaper, Morocco World News has reported that the  country’s football team may still travel to Algeria for their African Nations Championship title defense if they get a positive response from the hosts, Algeria.

The football federation previously said the team would be withdrawing from the competition. But according to the publication, Morocco’s national football team of local players is still making preparations for the African CHAN championship at the Mohammed VI complex, and is “ready to travel at any time,” President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation Fouzi Lekjaa told sports channel Arryadia on Thursday.

“All we are awaiting is related to the organizers of the competition who need to give authorization for the national team to travel on a Royal Air Maroc airplane,” Lekjaa explained.

He added that the airline is the official transport partner for all of Morocco’s national football teams.

“As you know, we are a short distance away, and it requires a short flight time,” he went on to say. “At any time that we receive a positive response, the national team is ready and equipped to travel to Constantine to participate in CHAN.”

Lekjaa also said that if an authorization is not given, the Moroccan team would be robbed of the chance to play in a tournament that they spent a long time getting ready for, as well as the chance to defend their title.

In December, Lekjaa announced that Morocco would boycott the continental tournament if the Moroccan team was not allowed to travel directly from Rabat to Constantine, the host of the tournament, on a Royal Air Maroc plane.

The tournament is set to kick off this Friday, and Morocco, being the defending champions and the holders of the most titles (DR Congo and Morocco both have two), would be conspicuous by its absence from the event.

Faced with Morocco’s demand for a direct flight route, Algerian officials have shirked their country’s responsibility in the matter.  Rachid Oukali, the head of the CHAN organizing committee, has said that the host country is not responsible for ensuring direct travel routes for the participating teams.

TETFUND Gives University Of Ibadan N342M Research Fund

4

The University of Ibadan has said no fewer than 14 proposals submitted from the institution are to be funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) in the 2021 National Research Fund, to the tune of N342 million.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC), of Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, Professor Oluyemisi Bamgbose, made the disclosure, on Thursday, while distributing letters of award to the TETFUND National Research Fund Grantees.

Professor Bamgbose commended TETFUND for filling the research gap in Nigeria, noting that worldwide, not every university lecturer is a researcher as many lecturers only focus on the teaching track, while only a few combine teaching with the research track.

She described the situation as an anomaly, as both teaching and research are supposed to go hand in hand, affirming that only a small proportion of academic staff engage in research due to a lack of access to local research funding.

The DVC also disclosed that the management of UI is doing all possible to make the University a research-intensive institution, saying: “To this end, each faculty and department is expected to have an active research committee to promote research culture among members of staff.”

Professor Bamgbose appealed to senior researchers to, as the essence of mentoring, ensure that they use their grants to support early career researchers so that there would be a generation of researchers to pass the baton to.

She assured that under the present administration, UI would continue to maintain her rightful position in the comity of higher education institutions globally and sustain her leadership role in Nigeria and West Africa, while contributing to societal development.

The DVC stated that the administration would deploy more resources to Research Administration so that UI would continue to soar higher.

INEC Extends Deadline For PVCs Collection To Jan. 29

3

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the timeframe for the collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) nationwide by eight days.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of, the Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, said the decision was taken at the commission’s meeting, to give registered voters ample opportunity to collect their PVCs before the forthcoming elections.

“For this reason, the timeframe for collection of PVCs is extended by eight days. Instead of ending on Sunday Jan. 22, the collection of PVCs will continue until Sunday Jan. 29.

“At the moment, the period of collection is 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. daily (including Saturdays and Sundays)”.

Okoye said following the extension, “Collection at Registration Area (Ward) level is extended by one week from Jan. 16 to 22. Collection at Local Government level Will resume on Jan. 23 to Jan. 29.

He also disclosed that INEC was investigating allegations of extortion by officials at some of the collection centres and inducement by some unscrupulous voters to circumvent processes in order to obtain their PVCs.

He said that those found culpable would face disciplinary action and/or prosecution.

“Similarly, the commission is disturbed by allegations of discriminatory issuance of PVCs in some locations. This is against the law.

“All bonafide registrants are entitled to their PVCs and to use them to vote on Election Day in any part of the country where they are registered”.

Okoye said that Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) had been directed to ensure that no such practices occurred nationwide and take immediate disciplinary action against violators.

“For the record, the commission has printed 13,868,441 PVCs for all new valid registrants as well as applicants for transfer or replacement of cards.

“Nevertheless, issuing officers should compile any complaints about non-availability of cards and forward them to their immediate supervisors for the attention of Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) who shall compile and forward them for necessary action.”

Okoye said INEC was encouraged by the turnout of registered voters and the surge in the number of collected PVCs across the country, particularly in some of the states, as many as 100,000 PVCs were collected in the last five days since the devolution to Ward level started on Jan. 6.

He also appreciated the patience and perseverance of citizens as INEC continued to finetune its process to make the collection easier.

Exploring Puerto Princesa Underground River, Philippines

1

The Puerto Princesa Underground River, also known as the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, is a spectacular underground national park that is also a protected area, located in the Province of Palawan, within the Republic of the Philippines.

Having the limestone karst mountain landscape, the park is located more precisely in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the western coast of the Province, and since 1992, it is managed by the City Government of Puerto Princesa.

The national park, as the name suggests, encompasses one of the world’s most impressive cave systems, featuring spectacular limestone karst landscapes, pristine natural beauty, and intact old-growth forests and distinctive wildlife that are quite unique for the surrounding area.

The underground river is 8 km (5 mi) long, however, the highlight of this subterranean river system is that it flows directly into the West Philippine Sea, with its brackish lower half subjected to tidal influence, distinguishing it as a significant natural global phenomenon.

The caves include major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers, including one Italian’s Chamber which is approximately 360 meters (1,181 feet) long, making it one of the largest cave rooms in the world.

Nonetheless, the flourishing flora has a large variety of forest formations which are representing eight of the thirteen forest types found in tropical Asia, namely forest over ultramafic soils, forest over limestone soils, montane forest, freshwater swamp forest etc.

There are reports that the researchers have identified more than 800 plant species from 300 genera and 100 families. Still, the fauna is making the area even more attractive for visitors who would like to get an impressive glimpse of the Philippine’s treasure.

The largest group of vertebrates that can be found in the park are the birds. Reportedly, there are some 165 species of birds all around the national park, from the 252 birds which can be found in Palawan. Most notable are the blue-naped parrot, Tabon scrub fowl, hill myna, Palawan hornbill, and the white breasted sea eagle.

In addition, there are also some 30 mammal species visible to every explorer of the park, among which are the long-tailed macaque, which is the only primate that can be found in the area, the bearded pig, bearcat, Palawan stink badger and the Palawan prcupine.

Nonetheless, reptiles, amphibians, bats, swiftlets and spiders can be seen for the experience to be even greater.

Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, nowadays, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is definitely something worth of, if not being seen, being mentioned, so that the people around the world would learn more about the beautiful Filipino places.
