Bolt Driver Apologizes To Abia Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh

Stephen Abuwatseya, an e-hailing driver, has publicly apologized to Alex Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member representing Aba North/South in Abia State, following an altercation during a package delivery. In a video statement released on Thursday, Abuwatseya expressed remorse for any actions that may have provoked the lawmaker’s anger and called on Nigerians to move past the incident.

In his apology, Abuwatseya stated, “Good day, Nigerians. My name is Stephen Abuwatseya. I recently had a misunderstanding with Rt. Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh. I want to apologize for any words or actions that may have led to the incident. Let us focus on unity, moving past divisions of religion, tribe, or region to build a stronger Nigeria.”

He continued by urging forgiveness and reconciliation, referencing the Lord’s Prayer, “Please, Nigerians, let’s forgive and move on. There is no justice without forgiveness. Thank you.” Abuwatseya also expressed gratitude to his family and supporters, saying, “I want to thank my family, friends, and everyone who stood by me. God bless Nigeria.”

The incident, which took place on October 28, saw Ikwechegh confront the driver during the delivery of a package at his Maitama, Abuja residence. The altercation, captured in a viral video, showed the lawmaker striking the driver after being asked to step outside to receive a delivery of snails.

In response, Ikwechegh issued a public apology on Instagram, acknowledging his behavior and expressing regret. He apologized to Abuwatseya, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Assembly, stating that his actions did not align with the standards expected of a public official, even under provocation.

The lawmaker added that both he and Abuwatseya had reached a “mutual and respectful agreement” through alternative dispute resolution, bringing closure to the matter.
