In an effort to enhance accountability and address criminal activity within the scrap industry, the National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria (NASWDEN) and other key stakeholders have announced a new registration initiative for scrap dealers across Nigeria. This initiative was presented at NASWDEN’s Extraordinary Special Delegates Conference in Abuja.
NASWDEN President, Mr. John Obeh, highlighted that the registration drive is in response to criminal incidents involving unauthorized scrap collectors, which have damaged the industry’s reputation. The campaign, themed “Operation Say No to Vandals and Double Taxation on Our Highway,” aims to mitigate the rising cases of vandalism linked to rogue elements within the industry.
To further bolster integrity, NASWDEN is creating a national database with biometric records for easy identification of registered dealers. A new task force will also oversee inspections of scrap-bearing vehicles at designated checkpoints, ensuring materials like railway tracks, manholes, and other infrastructure are not transported illegally. Trucks found carrying restricted items will be handed over to security agencies.
Addressing another concern, Mr. Obeh condemned the activities of illegal ticketing agents who impose arbitrary charges on scrap-bearing trucks along highways, inflating costs and hindering the federal government’s ease of doing business efforts. He called on the Inspector-General of Police to intervene in addressing these issues, which he said disproportionately affect the scrap industry.
In addition, NASWDEN urged partnerships with the Ministry of Steel Development and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria to create a sustainable supply of scrap materials for industrial use. Mr. Obeh also appealed to the Federal Government for logistical support, particularly in areas such as the Federal Capital Territory, to aid the task force’s operations.
Representing the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Chris Isokpunwu commended NASWDEN’s commitment to eliminating vandalism. He expressed optimism that this initiative would improve industry standards and safeguard the nation’s infrastructure.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps echoed their support, reinforcing the commitment to uphold security measures within the industry.
