Djokovic Wins Australian Open for the Tenth time

On Sunday, Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open for the tenth time, marking his first major victory following the lifting of the visa ban.

In just under three hours, Djokovic defeated Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas, winning 6-3, 7-6(4), and 7-6(5) to tie Rafael Nadal for the most Grand Slam victories with 22.

Novak Djokovic of Serbia plays a backhand return to Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece during the men’s singles final at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023.

Prior to the 2022 Australian Open, the Serbian player’s visa was canceled and he was deported because his medical exemption for the COVID-19 vaccination was rejected. In order to “arouse anti-VAX sentiment,” his appeals were also turned down on the grounds of public interest. In November, the restriction on his visa was lifted by Australian Minister of Immigration Andrew Giles.
