On Sunday, Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open for the tenth time, marking his first major victory following the lifting of the visa ban.
In just under three hours, Djokovic defeated Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas, winning 6-3, 7-6(4), and 7-6(5) to tie Rafael Nadal for the most Grand Slam victories with 22.
Prior to the 2022 Australian Open, the Serbian player’s visa was canceled and he was deported because his medical exemption for the COVID-19 vaccination was rejected. In order to “arouse anti-VAX sentiment,” his appeals were also turned down on the grounds of public interest. In November, the restriction on his visa was lifted by Australian Minister of Immigration Andrew Giles.

“Dare to dream. Everything is possible,” Djokovic said after the match. “Don’t let anyone take the dream away.”
Due to travel limitations that call for anyone entering the nation to be properly immunized against COVID-19, Djokovic is still unvaccinated and did not attend the US Open the previous year.
