Eye Health: Experts Commemorate World Sight Day 2023

World Sight Day is dedicated to raise public awareness of the importance of vision and eye health. It is observed on the second Thursday of every October. This year 2023, World Sight Day is celebrated on the 12th of October (Thursday).

This World Sight Day is aimed at educating individuals about the value of maintaining their eyesight at work and urging business leaders to give the eye health of employees worldwide top priority.

Visual impairments have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life in terms of its physical, emotional, social, and economic aspects. Nearly 220 billion people worldwide are visually handicapped, and 10 billion people have a vision impairment that could have been prevented or is still untreated.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) and International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) estimate that 350 million eye injuries occur at work each year, and that over 1.3 million people worldwide have vision impairment connected to their jobs. 90% of incidents of blindness can be prevented or treated if they are discovered early. As a result, raising public awareness is essential for stopping and slowing the course of eye illnesses. In order to raise awareness about eye health, advocate for better eye care, and support actions to avoid blindness and vision loss, the World Sight Day was established.

The World Sight Day theme for 2023 is “Love your eyes at work,” a worldwide urge to all corporate leaders to prioritize their employees’ eye health and recognize the value of vision at work.
