FCT Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands

Government-owned schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were left deserted on Monday as teachers commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved demands by the authorities.

A visit to several schools, including LEA Primary School in Area 10, Garki, and Government Science Technical College in Area 3, Garki, revealed empty classrooms and silent premises, with no students or teachers present.

The industrial action follows a directive issued by the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which instructed all primary and secondary school teachers to down tools indefinitely starting Monday.

In a communiqué signed by State Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, State Secretary Margaret Jethro, and State Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, the union stated that the decision came after an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting.

The meeting reviewed a seven-day ultimatum previously issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on March 11, which expired on March 29 without resolution.

The union explained that the strike became necessary due to the continued silence on teachers’ demands and the worsening economic conditions affecting workers, particularly within the FCT education sector.

The situation has now disrupted academic activities across public schools in Abuja, leaving students at home as negotiations between teachers and authorities remain unresolved.
