FG: Ebola Patient Recovering, No Community Spread

The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria’s confirmed Ebola patient is showing signs of recovery, with no evidence of community transmission reported so far.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare disclosed the development on Friday, October 23, as health authorities continued efforts to prevent the spread of the virus.

The patient, a woman who recently travelled from Uganda, tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in Abuja on October 20, 2026.

She remains under medical care as health officials monitor her condition.

Ebola Patient Shows Signs of Improvement

The Health Ministry said the patient’s condition had improved following treatment and monitoring.

However, officials have not announced her full recovery or discharge from medical care.

Authorities also confirmed that contact tracing, quarantine and surveillance activities remain ongoing.

The measures aim to identify possible exposures and prevent additional infections.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 44 contacts had been identified as of October 20.

These individuals included people who may have encountered the patient during her travel or medical treatment.

Importantly, the 44 contacts are not confirmed Ebola cases.

According to WHO, the patient developed symptoms on October 7 and sought treatment at a private healthcare facility in Abuja on October 11.

Laboratory testing subsequently confirmed the infection on October 20.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated its emergency response coordination system.

Government Strengthens Ebola Surveillance

The Federal Government has directed relevant agencies and healthcare institutions to comply strictly with Ebola prevention protocols.

Health authorities are strengthening surveillance at entry points and improving infection prevention measures at healthcare facilities.

Officials have also warned against misinformation about Ebola treatment and prevention.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated materials. Early identification, isolation and proper medical care are essential to controlling transmission.

The Health Ministry has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and rely on information from recognised public health authorities.

Although the latest recovery update is encouraging, the public health response continues.
