FG To Ban Unapproved Books In Schools By September 2026

The Federal Government has unveiled a new National Textbook Ranking System aimed at improving quality and standardisation across Nigeria’s education sector. Announced by the Federal Ministry of Education, the initiative will apply to primary, junior, and senior secondary schools, ensuring that only high-quality, curriculum-compliant materials are used in classrooms.

According to the ministry, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council will continue to approve textbooks but will now subject them to a national ranking process.

“Approved textbooks will now undergo a structured national ranking process to identify the most suitable options for each subject and level,” the statement said. Expert-led Standing Subject Committees will assess books based on academic and teaching standards.

The policy will significantly tighten regulations, as only top-ranked textbooks will be permitted for use in schools. “Only a limited number of top-ranked textbooks will be approved, ensuring improved quality control and consistency nationwide,” the statement added. It further emphasised that “Under this policy, any textbook not ranked will not be permitted for use, regardless of prior licensing status.”

Implementation is scheduled to begin in September 2026 after stakeholder consultations and the completion of the evaluation framework. The government noted that the move reflects its commitment to raising educational standards and improving access to reliable learning materials for students nationwide.
