Fire Guts UNIBEN Female Hostel

A female postgraduate hostel has been razed by fire in the University of Benin, Ekenwan Road Campus, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The incident, which started at about 1:00 pm, was attributed to a power surge in one of the rooms upstairs and then spread to others on the same floor, according to sources at the scene.

It was gathered that this disrupted the entire school activities, especially the students who were in their various classes taking lectures.

All the rooms upstairs in the one-storey building were completely burnt wiith nothing to salvage except the rooms downstairs.

However, the inferno was successfully extinguished by a combined team of firefighters which include the Federal Fire Service, the Edo State Fire Service, and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Fire Service, all in Benin City.

Students and officials could still be seen evacuating the belongings of the students from the rooms downstairs, which were not affected, for fear of the unknown with a mixed crowd of students – those affected and those unaffected – watching from a safe distance. No life was lost.
