ISIS Claims Responsibility For Attack That Killed 29 In Northeast Nigeria

The Islamic State(ISIS) has claimed responsibility for a deadly assault in northeast Nigeria that left 29 people dead, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the group said it carried out the attack on the village of Goyako in Gombe State, where armed fighters reportedly opened fire on residents.

According to reports, the attackers not only killed civilians but also destroyed homes and looted property, causing extensive damage within the community.

Local authorities noted that the motive behind the attack is still unclear, but cautioned that such incidents have become increasingly common across the region in recent years.

Northeast Nigeria has faced prolonged insurgent violence, with extremist-linked groups frequently targeting communities, security personnel, and infrastructure.

These recurring attacks have displaced millions and triggered a long-standing humanitarian crisis, leaving many residents struggling with insecurity, food shortages, and limited access to essential services.

While the Nigerian government and military have stepped up operations against insurgents, the situation remains complex due to challenging terrain and the ability of armed groups to carry out sudden attacks.

Global humanitarian organisations have continued to call for increased support and stronger protection for civilians, as violence persists in destabilising parts of the region.
