JAMB Warns Against Admission Outside CAPS

The examination board advises candidates to verify admission offers before accepting them, warning that unapproved admissions could affect their academic records.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned candidates against accepting admission outside CAPS, saying offers that bypass the approved process may not be recognised as valid.

The board issued the warning on Monday, October 12, 2026, through its official social media platforms, urging students seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions to confirm their status before accepting offers.

JAMB explained that admission offers made outside its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) could expose candidates to difficulties with their academic records and official admission documentation.

The warning comes as universities, polytechnics and colleges of education continue their admission exercises for the 2026/2027 academic session.

Why JAMB Warns Against Admission Outside CAPS

According to JAMB, admissions must follow the approved procedures established to ensure transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

The board explained that candidates who accept offers outside the official framework risk having their admissions rejected.

JAMB made the announcement while promoting an episode of its public education programme, JAMB Explained, which discusses illegal admissions and the potential consequences for affected students.

The examination body advised candidates to verify admission offers before making decisions that could affect their academic future.

What Makes an Admission Invalid?

JAMB’s 2026 admission guidelines specify that valid admissions must be processed through the examination board and supported by an official admission letter available through its e-Facility platform.

An admission offer issued by a tertiary institution without the required JAMB authorisation is not recognised by the board.

This means receiving an admission notification directly from a school does not necessarily establish that a candidate has completed the official admission process.

Candidates must ensure that their admission is approved through CAPS and reflected in their JAMB records.

The board maintains that candidates who accept admission outside the approved system do so at their own risk.

How to Check JAMB Admission Status on CAPS

Candidates who have received admission offers can verify their status through JAMB’s official online services.

JAMB CAPS portal used by Nigerian students to check and confirm admission status.
Candidates can check their admission status through JAMB’s official CAPS platform before accepting admission offers.

To check their admission status, applicants should visit the JAMB official website, access the e-Facility portal and sign in using their registered credentials.

They can then navigate to the admission-status section and access CAPS to review their application information.

Candidates whose admission status shows “Admitted” can proceed with the official acceptance process.

However, applicants whose status displays “Not Admitted” or “Admission in Progress” should continue monitoring their records rather than assuming that admission has been finalised.

JAMB has previously explained that an admission marked “In Progress” is not automatically approved.

Candidates should also confirm that they can obtain an official JAMB admission letter after completing the required procedures.

Why JAMB CAPS Verification Matters

The Central Admissions Processing System was introduced to automate and improve admission procedures across Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The platform provides a central record of admission decisions and allows candidates to accept or reject approved offers.

It also helps address irregular admission practices, multiple admissions and discrepancies between institutional records and JAMB’s official database.

By using CAPS, prospective students can confirm that their admission has passed through the required verification process.

JAMB Urges Candidates to Verify Before Accepting Offers

JAMB has continued to caution institutions and candidates against bypassing the official admission process.

Its latest warning reinforces the importance of obtaining proper admission approval rather than relying exclusively on notifications from institutions or third parties.

The board advises prospective students to confirm their status through its official platforms and ensure that their admission records are properly documented.

For candidates awaiting admission in the 2026/2027 academic session, verifying their offers through CAPS remains an important step towards securing recognised admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
