The Federal Government has approved the design of a proposed monorail connecting Ikeja Railway Station to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo announced the development on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
The project is expected to improve access to the airport by connecting it to the Lagos Red Line railway network.
According to Keyamo, the design was reviewed and approved during a meeting involving officials of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and engineering teams.

Where Will the Monorail Stop?
The proposed Lagos airport monorail will have five stations connecting Ikeja to the international airport.
The proposed stations are Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station and MMI Airport Station.

The railway is expected to terminate at the reconstructed Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
This would provide an additional transport connection for passengers traveling between the airport and other parts of Lagos.
How Will Passengers Benefit?
If completed as proposed, the monorail could reduce passenger’s dependence on road transportation when travelling to the airport.
Travellers arriving through the Lagos Red Line would be able to connect to the airport through the proposed service.
The project could also improve access for airport workers and other commuters travelling within the Ikeja airport corridor.
However, passenger fares, operating schedules and expected journey times have not been announced.
When Will Construction Begin?
Although the design has received approval, the Federal Government has not announced a confirmed construction commencement date.
A completion timeline has also not been provided.
FAAN had earlier indicated that financing discussions for the airport rail connection were progressing.
The next important developments will include confirmation of funding, construction arrangements and the project’s implementation schedule.
The monorail forms part of wider efforts to modernise the airport and improve passenger movement.
