Meet the New Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Akeem Owoade

Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade has been appointed as the new Alaafin of Oyo, following the approval of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

Early Life and Royal Lineage

Born in 1978, Prince Owoade hails from the esteemed Owoade-Agunloye royal family of Oyo town. He is a descendant of Aremo Aderounmu Iyanda Owoade of the Agure Compound. His father, Pa Rasaki Ibiyosi Owoade, contributed significantly to agricultural development in the Oke-Ogun community through his work with the Oyo North Agricultural Development Programme (ONADEP).

Educational Background

Prince Owoade’s educational journey began at Baptist High School in Saki, Oyo State, where he completed his secondary education in 1992. He pursued a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro (1994–1997), followed by a Higher National Diploma in the same field at The Polytechnic, Ibadan (1999–2001).

After his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) tenure with the Nigeria Gas Company in 2002, he briefly worked as a teller at Oceanic Bank International Plc in Warri (2003–2004). Seeking further education, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sunderland in 2008 and a Master of Science from Northumbria University in 2012. He also achieved Project Management Professional (PMP) certification in June 2015.

Professional Career

Alaafin of Oyo

Prince Owoade’s professional experience spans multiple countries and industries. He served as a Planning Engineer at Oil Reach Company in Glasgow, UK, before relocating to Canada. In Canada, he holds the position of Project Coordinator at Manitoba Hydro, a leading utility provider. Additionally, he is the president of 100279 Manitoba Limited, a real estate investment and financial services firm.

Philanthropy and Community Engagement

Known for his philanthropic endeavors, Prince Owoade has been actively involved in supporting his communities in both Nigeria and Canada. His contributions include educational support, community projects, and aid during crises, reflecting his dedication to social welfare.

Appointment as Alaafin of Oyo

The selection process for the new Alaafin involved extensive consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the council of kingmakers in Oyo. Prince Owoade’s appointment was officially confirmed on January 10, 2025, by Governor Seyi Makinde, ending the succession crisis that followed the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022.

Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade’s ascension to the throne is anticipated to usher in a new era of progress, cultural revival, and community upliftment in the historic Oyo Kingdom.
