The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced a substantial deployment of troops to support the Nigeria Police Force in ensuring a peaceful and orderly governorship election in Ondo State on November 16, 2024.
In a statement released on Thursday, Major General Buba Edward, Director of Defence Media Operations, emphasized that the presence of troops is intended to secure the election process, allowing citizens to vote freely without fear of intimidation. He added, “The deployment of troops is to ensure the safety of voters, prevent any form of harassment, and keep potential disruptors in check.” The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is also contributing by airlifting essential electoral materials to aid the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
General Edward also provided updates on various military operations across the northern regions, reporting that 88 terrorists were neutralized, and 228 suspects were detained in recent efforts to dismantle terrorist groups. “Our intensified operations in the North West and other areas aim to trap and dismantle terrorist networks across the country,” he stated.
Additionally, in the South-South region, troops disrupted oil theft activities, seizing stolen crude oil worth approximately N1 billion. They uncovered and destroyed 13 illegal refining ovens, 20 pits, 73 boats, 25 storage tanks, and 59 illicit refining sites. Other recovered items included three barges, seven speedboats, and over 940,000 liters of stolen crude oil.
During these operations, troops recovered 84 assorted weapons and more than 2,390 rounds of ammunition, including AK-47 rifles, Dane guns, revolver pistols, and various other arms, along with communication devices, vehicles, and motorcycles.
Major General Buba concluded by stressing the commitment of the armed forces to protect Nigeria’s citizens, resources, and territorial integrity through ongoing and adaptable operations.
