Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong expressed confidence ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin Republic, a match pivotal for securing Nigeria’s spot in the tournament in Morocco next year.
Nigeria has accumulated seven points in its last four games under coach Augustine Eguavoen, with three victories and one draw, including a win against Benin Republic in the first leg. Now, they are set to face Benin Republic again in the decisive second leg.
In a pre-game press conference, Troost-Ekong highlighted the team’s positive experiences at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, saying, “The last time we played Benin was in October, and we won at home. We know Benin is a strong team, and Gernot Rohr, who coached our national team for over five years, knows our style well.”
He added, “It’s going to be a challenging game. But here, especially in this stadium, we have fantastic memories from earlier this year. We’re feeling at home in Abidjan and fully prepared to win and secure our qualification tomorrow.”
Troost-Ekong believes that Nigeria’s confidence will be boosted by the familiarity of the Abidjan pitch, as they aim for a fourth victory in the qualifiers. However, Coach Eguavoen has reminded the Super Eagles to stay focused and avoid complacency against Benin.
