NAFDAC has launched an investigation into the death of a corps member in Enugu State following allegations involving medicines administered during his treatment.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is investigating the death of National Youth Service Corps member Etimbuk Daniel at an orientation camp in Enugu State.
Daniel, a former Students’ Union Government president of Akwa Ibom State University, died while participating in the compulsory NYSC orientation programme.
His death has raised questions about medical care at orientation camps and allegations that substandard medicines may have contributed to his condition.
What Happened Before the NYSC Member Died?

According to preliminary information released by NAFDAC, Daniel visited the camp clinic on October 7, 2026, with symptoms suggesting severe malaria and a history of peptic ulcer disease.
Medical personnel treated and stabilized him before discharging him with oral medication the following morning.
He later returned to the clinic on October 10 after developing additional symptoms, including sweating, thigh pain and recurring low blood pressure.
As his condition deteriorated, medical personnel referred him to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla.
He subsequently became unconscious, and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Did Fake Drugs Cause His Death?
Allegations about possible fake medicines emerged following the incident.
However, NAFDAC has not confirmed that fake or substandard drugs caused Daniel’s death.
The agency’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, said preliminary clinical findings suggested acute kidney injury associated with severe dehydration and shock.
She emphasised that the preliminary assessment did not establish whether the medicines administered contributed to his death.
What Has NAFDAC Discovered?
NAFDAC officials have visited the camp clinic, interviewed medical personnel and collected medicine samples for laboratory analysis.
The investigation seeks to determine whether substandard or falsified medicines were involved in Daniel’s treatment.
The agency says appropriate regulatory action will follow if its findings identify violations.
What Happens Next?
The Nigerian Senate has also ordered an investigation into Daniel’s death and the state of healthcare facilities at NYSC orientation camps.
The outcome could prompt closer examination of emergency medical services and medicine quality controls within the NYSC system.
For now, the cause of death remains subject to investigation, while the laboratory results are expected to help clarify the allegations.
