Ahead of the Ondo State governorship election on November 16, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled a peace accord signing for November 8, with all candidates agreeing to commit to a violence-free election. The National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, will oversee the ceremony to promote a peaceful electoral process.
In a recent consultative meeting with Civil Society Organisations in Abuja, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu announced a significant milestone in voter engagement, with nearly 72% of registered voters having collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). He further noted that a mock accreditation exercise is set for November 6 in select polling units to ensure smooth uploads to the results viewing portal.
To bolster election security, INEC is conducting a final assessment of logistical arrangements and has coordinated with security agencies to address any potential hotspots. Prof. Yakubu emphasized INEC’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment throughout the election period and acknowledged the vital role of civil society in encouraging peaceful elections.
He also urged CSOs who observed the recent Edo State election to submit their reports promptly, highlighting the commission’s ongoing engagement with officials, stakeholders, and security agencies as part of their readiness review for the Ondo election.
