One person has been confirmed dead, while three others were rescued alive after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.
The incident occurred on Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road, leaving construction workers feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, saying its emergency response team received a distress call at approximately 12:10 a.m.
According to the agency, its Cobra Response Team, dispatched from the Onipanu Base, arrived at the scene at 12:12 a.m. and immediately commenced rescue operations.
Emergency responders discovered that the building had collapsed, with construction workers suspected to be trapped beneath the debris.
How Rescue Teams Responded to the Collapse

LASEMA said rescue operations intensified after emergency workers heard groaning sounds from beneath the rubble, suggesting that some victims were still alive.
An excavator was deployed to assist in clearing the debris, while safety measures were implemented to protect both trapped victims and rescue personnel.
By approximately 3:33 a.m., three adult men had been rescued alive, while the body of another man was recovered from the rubble.
The survivors received immediate medical attention from LASEMA paramedics and personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being transferred to a hospital for further treatment.
The rescue operation involved several agencies, including LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Ambulance Service and the Nigeria Police Force.
What Caused the Lagos Building Collapse?
The exact cause of the building collapse has not been established.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said relevant regulatory authorities would investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The agency also indicated that emergency responders were continuing their search to determine whether additional construction workers remained trapped beneath the debris.
The development has renewed concerns about construction safety and compliance with building regulations in Lagos State.
Authorities have repeatedly emphasised the need for developers and contractors to comply with approved building standards and engage qualified construction professionals.
Search Continues for Possible Survivors
Emergency responders were still assessing the collapsed structure to establish whether additional victims remained trapped as of the latest available reports.
LASEMA said the rescue operation was being coordinated with other emergency and security agencies to ensure that anyone still beneath the rubble could be located.
The agency also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
Further details about the cause of the collapse and the final number of casualties are expected following investigations and the conclusion of rescue operations.
