Over 137 Sponsored Scholars Absconded – TETFUND

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) says over 137 students sponsored on scholarship abroad has absconded.

The Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Sonny Echono disclosed this  when he appeared before the House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating the alleged mismanagement of N2.3 trillion tertiary education tax by the Fund.

According to Echono, the scholars who were sponsored by TETFUND for higher education abroad refused to return to the country after completing their programmes.

He noted that the unpatriotic act has become a major crisis, adding that their guarantors had suffered undue hardship because when scholars disappear, guarantors are made to pay all the money expended on behalf of such students.

The E.S however stated that the Fund  was working with stakeholders for stringent and effective measures to be taken against those who refused to return to the country for Nigerians to benefit from their expertise.
