Oyo Police Rescue Two Abducted Children, But Where Are Oriire’s Missing Teachers And Pupils?

The recent rescue of two abducted children by the Oyo State Police Command has renewed attention on one of Oyo State’s most troubling unresolved cases, the disappearance of teachers and pupils from Oriire Local Government Area.

The intelligence-led operation, carried out in collaboration with the Amotekun Corps, local vigilante groups and hunters, also resulted in the arrest of four suspected kidnappers and the recovery of a cache of sophisticated weapons, including Russian-made double-barrel guns, a Magnum pump-action rifle, an English-made revolver pistol and dozens of live cartridges believed to be linked to an armed robbery syndicate.

According to the police, the operation followed the abduction of two children in Ebinpejo Village, Lanlate, where security operatives tracked the suspects to a forest hideout after receiving credible intelligence.

Following a gun battle, the suspects fled, but four were later arrested during follow-up operations, while the abducted children were rescued alive and reunited with their family after receiving medical attention. The latest breakthrough has raised fresh hopes that similar efforts could eventually provide answers in the unresolved Oriire school abduction, where dozens of pupils and their teachers remain missing.

Here is what we know so far.

The Oriire Abduction Still Remains Unresolved

Despite these recent security successes, attention has again shifted to the unresolved abduction involving 46 pupils and their teachers from Oriire Local Government Area.

The incident shocked Oyo State and sparked widespread concern over the safety of schools, particularly in rural communities.

Months after the mass abduction, authorities have yet to provide a comprehensive update on the whereabouts of all the victims, leaving many questions unanswered.

Families Continue To Wait For Answers

For relatives of the abducted children and teachers, every successful rescue operation elsewhere in the state brings renewed hope that their loved ones may also be found.

However, the prolonged silence surrounding the Oriire case has deepened anxiety among affected families and residents.

Community members have repeatedly called for intensified search efforts and regular updates from security agencies regarding the ongoing investigation.

Security Agencies Continue Operations Across Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command has maintained that it remains committed to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes through intelligence-driven operations.

The command has also praised the collaboration between the police, Amotekun Corps, local vigilante groups, hunters and members of the public, describing their support as critical to recent breakthroughs.

Authorities have urged residents to continue providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations and rescue operations.

What Happens Next?

Although the recent rescue of two abducted children demonstrates that coordinated security efforts can produce results, the unresolved Oriire school abduction remains one of Oyo State’s most pressing security concerns.

Families, residents and concerned Nigerians continue to hope that the same level of intelligence gathering and joint operations that secured the rescue in Ibarapa will eventually lead to the safe return of the abducted teachers and pupils from Oriire.

For now, many are still asking one question: Where are Oyo’s abducted teachers and pupils?

What’s The State Government Saying?

Governor Seyi Makinde has repeatedly described the Oriire school abduction as a tragedy that requires unity rather than political blame. Addressing protesters and labour unions during demonstrations over the kidnapping, the governor said his administration was working closely with security agencies to secure the safe release of the victims and urged residents not to lose hope.

Makinde has also revealed that security agencies established contact with the abductors during rescue efforts but maintained that his government would not negotiate with kidnappers, insisting that doing so would encourage more criminal attacks. According to the governor, surrendering to ransom demands would amount to handing the authority of the state over to criminal elements.

The governor further blamed the worsening security situation on the movement of terrorist groups from northern Nigeria into parts of the South-West, saying intelligence reports linked the attack to armed groups taking advantage of forest corridors.

He has consistently assured families that rescue operations remain active and that the government is doing everything possible to bring the abducted teachers and pupils home safely.
