Several Injured as Vehicle Crashes into Liverpool Victory Crowd

An evening of joy turned tragic in northwest England when a car slammed into a group gathered to mark Liverpool Football Club’s latest Premier League triumph, leaving dozens — including four children — with injuries.

Authorities detained a 53-year-old local man believed to be responsible for the incident. They described it as “an isolated incident” and confirmed there are no other suspects involved, adding that there’s no indication of a terror-related motive.

Liverpool’s mayor assured the public that a formal investigation will uncover the full story behind the crash. “It’s not for people on social media to be speculating what happened,” the mayor stated. “The police are the only people who have all of that information to hand – and they are the people we should trust.”

Visuals captured after the event revealed a street cordoned off with police presence and debris scattered at the location.

Massive crowds had filled the streets to take part in a celebratory bus parade following the club’s landmark 20th league title. However, celebrations were cut short when a gray minivan drove into fans dressed in red. Bystanders quickly surrounded the vehicle, some attempting to stop it.

Medical officials confirmed 27 individuals were transported to hospitals, with four people in serious condition. Emergency crews had to free three adults and one child who were trapped underneath the vehicle. Around 20 others were treated for minor wounds at the scene.

“This gray people carrier just pulled up from the right and just rammed into all the people at the side of us… It was extremely fast. Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car,” said a fan, who was present with his wife and two daughters. “It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people … I saw people lying on the ground, people unconscious. It was horrendous. So horrendous,” he added.

Clips circulated online showed the driver being confronted by a furious crowd. At one point, individuals could be seen attacking the vehicle, which then reversed and sped away.

Another person described watching the car enter Water Street at considerable speed while honking. The vehicle drove past a police van and through the crowd.

Footage also captured emergency responders assisting the wounded, with some being lifted into ambulances. Police restricted access to the crash site and erected a tent as part of their investigation.

“We heard a frantic beeping ahead, a car flew past me and my mate, people were chasing it and trying to stop him, windows smashed at the back,” one witness recalled. “He then drove into people, police and medics ran past us, and people were being treated on the side of the road.”

Local authorities received the alert shortly after 6 p.m. regarding a car that had hit several pedestrians in the downtown area. Officials mentioned that detailed traffic control plans had been implemented in advance of the parade.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision and it is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media,” one senior police official stated.

‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’

The event coincided with a UK holiday and featured the Liverpool team parading through the city atop a bus, cheered on by thousands over a 10-mile route.

The incident left the city in shock, and numerous figures from the sports community expressed solidarity with those affected.

Former club manager Jurgen Klopp commented, “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected,” also posting, “You’ll never walk alone.”

Fellow football clubs — including Manchester United and Everton — also offered messages of sympathy, as did the Premier League.

On a national level, the Prime Minister extended support, saying, “My thoughts and the thoughts of the whole country are with all of those that are affected, those injured, which of course includes children, their families, their friends… Liverpool fans everywhere.” He also thanked emergency workers “who did a fantastic job and continue to do so.”

Youth Influence On Nigeria’s Future

In Nigeria’s unfolding story, the youth are no longer just the leaders of tomorrow—they are powerful voices shaping the narrative today. With over 60% of the population under the age of 30, the energy, creativity, and determination of young Nigerians are becoming the country’s most vital force for change.

Every year, something special happens in the University of Lagos, called —The Convention, the flagship event of the National Association of Political Science Students (NAPSS UNILAG). Far from the confines of lecture halls and academic theories, this annual gathering becomes a vibrant stage where Nigeria’s next generation of political thinkers step into the real world of governance and policy.

Designed as more than just a talk shop, The Convention brings students face-to-face with political leaders and policy experts, creating a rare opportunity for meaningful exchange.

Here, young minds critically analyze the dynamics of Nigeria’s governance, confront the gaps between policy ideals and harsh realities, and work together to craft practical solutions.

By the end, students walk away not just informed but inspired to participate, advocate, and shape the future of policy-making in Nigeria. The Convention isn’t just an event; it’s where engagement meets empowerment.

May 27: What You Should Know About Child Adoption In Nigeria

0

The federal government plans to review the child adoption regulations in the country, to improve the process and stop violence and other forms of abuse against children.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said this at a press conference held with Save the Children International (SCI) ahead of the Children’s Day celebration on Monday, 26th May 2025 in Abuja.

Ms Sulaiman-Ibrahim said the review will help protect children’s rights and welfare and make adoption more transparent, effective, and focused on the child.

She also said the government will soon introduce updated National Creche Guidelines to help regulate childcare centres and prevent abuse.

“We are establishing the Child Protection Knowledge and Data Centre. We are finalising the Child Protection Services structure, including formal protection, reporting, response, and rehabilitation,” she said.

“We are also promoting the approved six-month maternity leave for new mothers and two weeks’ paternity leave for new fathers.”

She said the government is also working to strengthen the Nigerian Children’s Parliament across the country.

“We recognise it as a vital platform for child participation, leadership, and advocacy on development issues.
The voices of our children matter, and we must amplify them in shaping policies that affect their present and future,” she said.

Duncan Harvey, Country Director of SCI, also spoke about the need to involve children in finding solutions to issues that affect them.

Mr Harvey said: “Children are not just victims; they are part of the solution. Support child-led platforms, peer support groups, safe spaces, and school clubs that encourage children to speak up and support one another.
Involve children in developing school rules and anti-bullying policies. Incorporate empathy, respect, and conflict resolution into the children’s syllabus.

engage children in feedback sessions and policy reviews to ensure their voices shape school culture and anti-bullying measures,” he said.

Child Adoption Rule In Nigeria

The major law that regulates the adoption process in Nigeria are the Child’s Rights Act and other state adoption laws.

The legal and regulatory framework for adoption revolves primarily around;

  • Child’s Rights Act 2003 this is the principal legislation regulating adoption in Nigeria and It outlines the requirements one must meet in order to be qualified to adopt a child.
  • (State) Adoption Laws
  • Regulatory Agencies
  • International Conventions
  • Judicial Precedents

The act in Section 129 provides for the category of persons who may adopt a child in Nigeria.

From the provision:
The following persons may apply for an adoption order-

  • a married couple where each of them has attained the age of twenty-five years, and
  • there is an order authorizing them jointly to adopt a child; or
  • a married person, if he has obtained the consent of his spouse, as required under section 132 of this Act; or
  • a single person, ifhe has attained the age of thirty-five years, provided that the child to be adopted is of the same sex as the person adopting; or
  • in all cases specified in paragraphs (a), (b), and (c) of this section, the adopter or adopters shall be persons found to be suitable to adopt the child in question by the appropriate investigating officers.

By law, anyone who wants to adopt a child must be at least 25 years old and must be at least 21 years older than the child. So, if you want to adopt a 10-year-old child, you must be at least 31 years old.

It is also important to note that people who are cohabiting or in same-sex relationships are not allowed to adopt children under Nigerian law.

Character and financial ability are also important in the adoption process.

The Child’s Rights Act says that the person applying must have good character and must have enough money and resources to take proper care of the child.

Getting Approval from the State Welfare Office

In most states, people who want to adopt a child must first write a formal request to the state welfare office. This request asks for permission to begin the adoption process. After sending the request, the welfare office invites the applicants for an interview. During this interview, the office checks if the applicants are fit to adopt a child.

Filing a Court Application

If the applicants pass the welfare office interview, they need to apply to a court for child adoption.

This application goes to the court registrar and must include documents like a marriage certificate, birth certificate or age declaration, passport photos, and a medical fitness report from a government hospital.

Home Background Check

After the court receives the application, it sends an order to the welfare office to carry out a background check on the applicants.

This investigation checks if the applicants are suitable to raise a child. At the same time, the court picks a guardian ad litem to protect the child’s interest during the process. The guardian acts like a probation officer and writes a report to the court after completing the investigation.

Welfare Officer’s Recommendation

The welfare officer will visit the applicants’ home several times to check how well the child is adjusting.

Once the officer believes the child is settled, they write a recommendation to the court based on their findings.

Court’s Final Decision

The court considers the adoptive parents’ plans to keep the child safe, healthy, and happy. If the court is satisfied, it gives an adoption order. If not, it can reject the application.

New Birth Certificate

When the court approves the adoption, the new parents must get a new birth certificate. This document officially names them as the child’s parents.

South Africa Condemns U.S. Refugee Policy for Afrikaners

0

The South African government has issued a sharp rebuke to the United States’ decision to grant refugee status to Afrikaners, a white ethnic minority, under a controversial policy initiated by President Donald Trump.

The policy, which fast-tracks asylum for Afrikaners citing alleged racial discrimination, has sparked outrage in South Africa, with officials dismissing claims of persecution as baseless and accusing the U.S. of undermining the country’s post-apartheid progress.

On May 12, 59 Afrikaners arrived in the U.S. after Trump’s February executive order prioritized their resettlement, halting admissions for other refugee groups from conflict zones like Sudan and Afghanistan.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called the move “misinformed” and a “slap in the face” to the nation’s constitutional commitment to non-racialism.

“These individuals are not fleeing persecution,” Ramaphosa stated during a tense White House meeting with Trump on May 21.

“They are fleeing the accountability of a democratic society addressing historical inequities.”

He further labeled those leaving as “cowards” unwilling to embrace South Africa’s transformative policies, such as the Expropriation Act of 2024, which allows land redistribution but has seen limited use.

The South African Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation echoed Ramaphosa’s sentiments, arguing that Afrikaners, who constitute about 7% of the population but own over 70% of private farmland, remain among the most economically privileged groups.

A government statement emphasized that crime, including farm attacks, affects all racial groups, with police data showing only 44 farm-related murders in 2024, a fraction of the country’s 20,000 annual homicides.

“There is no evidence of genocide or systemic racial targeting,” said spokesperson Chrispin Phiri, refuting Trump’s claims amplified by advisor Elon Musk.

Prominent Afrikaner groups, including AfriForum and the Solidarity Movement, have distanced themselves from the U.S. policy.

AfriForum’s CEO, Kallie Kriel, stated, “We are committed to building a future here, not fleeing to the U.S. under false pretenses.”

The groups criticized the African National Congress’s race-based policies but rejected the notion of widespread persecution, noting that most Afrikaners intend to stay and contribute to South Africa.

The policy has strained U.S.-South Africa relations, already tense after Trump cut $8 billion in aid and expelled South Africa’s ambassador for criticizing the policy as a “supremacist insurgency.”

South Africa’s charge at the International Court of Justice against Israel for alleged genocide has also been cited as a factor in Trump’s decision, seen as retaliation for Pretoria’s stance.

Critics, including U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, have accused the administration of creating a “global apartheid” by prioritizing Afrikaners while barring other refugees.

South African officials have expressed concern that the policy misrepresents the country’s efforts to address apartheid’s legacy, potentially emboldening far-right narratives.

“This is not about humanitarian need but political posturing,” said Supra Mahumapelo, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations.

As thousands more Afrikaners reportedly inquire about U.S. asylum, South Africa insists it will not obstruct their departure but maintains they do not qualify as refugees under international law.

The controversy underscores broader tensions over race, privilege, and international perceptions of South Africa’s democratic project, with the government urging the U.S. to reconsider its approach to avoid further diplomatic fallout.

US ‘Golden Dome’ Could Ignite Nuclear Conflict -North Korea

North Korea has denounced the United States’ intentions to build a state-of-the-art “Golden Dome” missile defense network, cautioning that it could “turn outer space into a potential nuclear war field”.

The advanced system, which President Donald Trump aims to reveal before concluding his presidency, is being developed to tackle “next-generation” threats from the sky, such as cruise and ballistic missiles.

According to reports from state-run outlets, officials in Pyongyang’s foreign ministry described the proposal as “the height of self-righteousness [and] arrogance”.

They also accused the US of being “hell-bent… to militarise outer space”, suggesting the initiative might escalate tensions and trigger “a global nuclear and space arms race”.

North Korea has consistently positioned the US as a hostile power and frequently lashes out at joint defense exercises carried out by Washington and Seoul.

Hong Min, a leading expert at the Korea Institute for National Unification, shared with AFP that Pyongyang likely views this missile initiative as a move that could “significantly weaken” its current nuclear strategy.

He added, “If the US completes its new missile defence programme, the North will be forced to develop alternative means to counter or penetrate it”.

In 2022, North Korea enacted legislation officially naming itself a nuclear-armed nation. Since then, it has ramped up its weapons testing, launching a series of both cruise and ballistic missiles.

Earlier this year, it announced the successful test of a medium-range ballistic missile equipped with a hypersonic warhead, asserting that the weapon “will reliably contain any rivals in the Pacific region”.

China has echoed North Korea’s disapproval of the US plans. In a statement last week, Beijing expressed that it is “seriously concerned” about the Golden Dome project, claiming it carries “strong offensive implications”.

“The United States, in pursuing a ‘US-first’ policy, is obsessed with seeking absolute security for itself,” China’s foreign ministry said. “This violates the principle that the security of all countries should not be compromised and undermines global strategic balance and stability.”

While some defense specialists agree the US needs to modernize its outdated protective systems, they caution that bringing the Golden Dome to life could be hindered by both political resistance and technological complexity.

One concern is the financial burden it may impose. Although $25 billion (£18.7 billion) has been set aside in the latest funding plan, projections suggest the full cost could swell to 20 times that amount over the coming decades.

Edo State Security Corps: What It Means For The State

On May 26, 2025, the Edo State Government kicked off a critical training program for the newly recruited members of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent Orientation Camp in Okada.

While the deadline for recruits to report has passed, the initiative remains a pivotal step in bolstering security across the state.

Here’s all you need to know about this community-driven security effort and what it means for the future.

What is the Edo State Security Corps About?

The Security Corps is a state-backed, community-based security outfit designed to tackle grassroots insecurity in the State.

Launched as a response to rising challenges like cultism, kidnapping, and armed robbery, the ESSC aims to complement the efforts of conventional security agencies, such as the police, by fostering localized, proactive responses to crime.

According to Paul Ohonbamu, Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communication, the corps has been restructured under the guidance of retired generals to ensure a disciplined and effective force.

The initiative reflects the state’s commitment to empowering local communities to take charge of their safety while promoting stability and reducing insecurity.

Why Is This Training Important?

The training, which began this week at the NYSC Camp in Okada, is a cornerstone of Edo State’s broader strategy to strengthen its security framework.

The program, designed to equip recruits with the skills, discipline, and coordination needed, will address local security threats effectively,by focusing on grassroots-level intervention, ensure that security personnel are familiar with the unique challenges of their communities, from urban centers like Benin City to rural areas across Edo’s three senatorial districts.

This initiative is particularly timely given recent reports of violent incidents in nearby regions, such as the attack in Imo State that claimed 30 lives, underscoring the need for robust local security measures.

The training also fosters collaboration between the ESSC and national security agencies, creating a unified front against crime.

What Happens If The Recruits Don’t Show Up?

The Edo State Government set a strict deadline for recruits to report to the NYSC Camp by the close of May 26, 2025.

According to Commissioner Ohonbamu, failure to report by this deadline results in disqualification from the training program, emphasizing the state’s commitment to discipline and accountability.

What’s Next After the Training?

Following the completion of the training, successful recruits will be deployed across Edo State to support local security efforts.

The ESSC is expected to play a critical role in maintaining law and order, working alongside police and other agencies to prevent and respond to criminal activities.

The state government has also urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, signaling that the ESSC will rely on community cooperation to be effective. Looking ahead, the corps is likely to undergo continuous training and restructuring to adapt to evolving security challenges, ensuring that Edo remains a safe and stable environment for its residents.

Why This Matters Now

The launch of the ESSC training marks a significant milestone in Edo State’s fight against insecurity. As the recruits begin their intensive program, the initiative serves as a model for other states grappling with similar challenges. For Edo residents, the ESSC represents hope for safer communities and a stronger, more coordinated response to crime. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of the training and the impact of the Edo State Security Corps in the weeks to come.

NFF Suspends Referee After NNL Match Controversy

0

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has handed an indefinite suspension to referee Adebayo Qudus following his contentious officiating during a Nigeria National League (NNL) clash between Gateway United and Sporting Lagos. Qudus faced sharp criticism over several questionable calls, including awarding Gateway a highly debatable penalty and making decisions that many believe violated standard officiating rules, casting a shadow over the game’s fairness.

According to the NFF’s Referee Development Committee, Qudus’s performance damaged the integrity of Nigerian football. A statement signed by Ameenu Mohammed emphasized that his actions undermined the credibility of match officiating and tarnished the image of the game.

During the match, Sporting Lagos striker Seun Akanji appeared to have scored a valid goal that was inexplicably ruled out for offside even though the assistant referee signaled it as a goal by advancing toward the center. Akanji received a yellow card despite no flag being raised. Shortly afterward, he scored again, only for Qudus to blow the whistle during play, show him a second yellow, and issue a red card. The assistant referee did not indicate offside in either instance.

Gateway United took advantage of the turmoil, equalizing with the controversial penalty before securing a 2-1 victory.

The controversy escalated further when Qudus reportedly posted a celebratory message on Facebook after the match, stating, “ALHAMDULILLAH IT ENDED SUCCESSFULLY 2-1 IN FAVOUR OF GATEWAY….. THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT.” This public display sparked outrage among fans and Sporting Lagos officials, with some on social media calling for severe consequences, including jail time, and condemning the officiating as blatant bias.

The NFF’s decision to suspend Qudus reflects a larger move to clean up officiating standards in Nigerian football. Earlier in the year, the federation warned that referees found guilty of match-fixing or manipulation would face a minimum ten-year ban and possible legal action from security agencies. This is part of an ongoing crackdown, including the suspension of another referee, Emmanuel Kolawole, in February for a similarly controversial penalty decision in an NPFL match. Measures such as improved monitoring and expanded live broadcasts have also been introduced to ensure greater transparency.

Sporting Lagos, who are in the race for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), expressed frustration over the incident. A member of the club’s board, Fola Olatunji-David, expressed his anger online, saying those responsible for the officiating disaster should lose their jobs or face legal consequences, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

This swift disciplinary action by the NFF demonstrates a commitment to raising officiating standards and confronting deeper issues such as insufficient referee training and poor working conditions, which continue to fuel controversies in domestic football.

NSF: Ogun Triumphs Over Eaglets to Set Up Final Showdown with Kwara

0

Team Ogun’s men’s football squad secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Golden Eaglets – competing under the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) initiative – in the semi-finals of the 2024 National Sports Festival on Sunday at the Ikene centre.

The win propels Ogun State to the men’s football final, where they will face Kwara State on Tuesday at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex.

The Golden Eaglets initially took the lead, but Team Ogun mounted an impressive comeback to claim the win, much to the delight of their home fans. Supporters are expected to turn out in force on Tuesday for the final in Abeokuta.

Meanwhile, in the women’s semi-final, Ogun State’s female team fell 1-0 to the Flamingos, who also competed under the IJA initiative. Shakirat Moshood’s penalty proved to be the decisive factor in that encounter.

The Flamingos will meet Delta State in the women’s final after Delta defeated Osun 4-1 in the other semi-final.

Kwara State also booked their spot in the men’s final, overcoming Kaduna State 1-0. Muhammed Abdullahi scored the crucial goal in the 62nd minute to secure Kwara’s passage.

The stage is now set for an exciting final between Ogun and Kwara, while the Golden Eaglets and Kaduna State will clash for bronze in the third-place match.

Organisers of the 22nd National Sports Festival have announced that both the men’s and women’s football finals will be held at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.

Iga Swiatek Eyes Historic Fourth Straight French Open Title

Defending champion Iga Swiatek began her campaign for a historic fourth consecutive French Open crown by defeating Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova 6-3, 6-3 on Monday. Swiatek, who is riding a remarkable 22-match winning streak in Paris, is aiming to become the first female player in the professional era since 1968 to secure four consecutive French Open titles.

Arriving more than 10 days before the tournament to fine-tune her clay-court game, the Polish star believes the early preparation has already paid off.
“It was the first time we had this situation (of arriving early),” Swiatek shared in her post-match interview. “But I liked it. I knew I was going to have the best courts to practice on.”

Despite a somewhat challenging start, with Sramkova playing freely and resisting early on, Swiatek found her rhythm. She broke the Slovak’s serve to go up 4-3 in the first set and eventually sealed it.

Sramkova made a strong start in the second set, breaking Swiatek and taking a 2-0 lead. However, the world number one swiftly regained control, winning six of the next seven games to clinch victory in an hour and 24 minutes.

Unusually, Swiatek entered this year’s French Open without a title to her name so far in 2025, but her clinical performance in the opening match signals that she’s ready to chase another slice of history.

2025 Hajj: Saudi Arabia Deports Sheikh Gumi

Prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has been deported from Saudi Arabia and barred from participating in the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage. Sheikh Gumi, based in Kaduna, confirmed the incident in a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Monday.

According to Gumi, he had obtained a visa for the pilgrimage but was denied entry into Medina due to his political views.

“Despite holding a valid visa, the Saudi authorities refused me entry because of my views on global politics,” he wrote.

Gumi had traveled to Saudi Arabia with a delegation of religious scholars sponsored by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). The delegation arrived at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina on Saturday night via Umza Air. However, upon arrival, Saudi immigration officials reportedly denied Gumi entry, stopped him at the airport, and placed him on a return flight to Nigeria.

In his statement, Sheikh Gumi thanked Nigerian authorities for their support and stated that they have pledged to engage with Saudi officials for clarification and a resolution.

“I am grateful to the Nigerian authorities who have assured me of their efforts to engage with the Saudi authorities on this matter,” he said.

A NAHCON source, speaking anonymously, confirmed the deportation. The source said the Commission was taken aback by Saudi Arabia’s decision, particularly since all members of the delegation had valid visas and met the required criteria for Hajj participation.

Although Saudi authorities have not issued an official explanation, observers believe the deportation may be linked to Sheikh Gumi’s outspoken political and religious views, which often challenge Saudi policies. In recent years, Gumi has been involved in dialogue with armed groups in northern Nigeria and has openly criticized both Western and Middle Eastern political interventions.

The incident has sparked widespread debate within religious communities and the general public, raising concerns about the impact of political beliefs on fulfilling religious obligations.

As of this report, there has been no official statement from either the Saudi embassy in Nigeria or the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sheikh Gumi has since returned to Nigeria, where he has resumed his preaching and teaching activities.
