Chinese Tycoon Abruptly Quits Tech Giant He Founded As It Grows Bigger Than Ever

0

Pinduoduo’s founder stepped down suddenly this week, shaking investors who had watched him take the Chinese e-commerce company from nothing to a potential Alibaba competitor in less than a decade.

Colin Huang’s decision to resign as chairman wasn’t a complete surprise. The 41-year-old entrepreneur already quit as CEO last summer, and was expected to eventually leave leadership at Pinduoduo altogether.

But his exit still came faster than expected, and during an uncertain time for many of China’s internet firms as Beijing works to rein in the sector.

Huang will explore “new, long-term opportunities”, the company said in a statement on Wednesday, as it released figures stating it was now China’s largest e-commerce firm.

Shares in Pinduoduo, valued at close to $200bn (£143bn), fell by nearly 8% following the news, wiping about $4bn from Mr Huang’s wealth.

The former Google employee was briefly ranked the second-richest person in China last year, following a surge in sales at his e-commerce business.

Pinduoduo’s 788m active buyers in 2020 overtook Jack Ma’s Alibaba’s 779m annual shopper count for the first time.

Its novel features include team buying, where customers come together to purchase more units at a lower price. They can also play games on the site and are sometimes rewarded with gifts.

Nigerian Air Force To Prioritise Welfare Of Personnel

0

Nigeria’s Chief Of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, says the nigerian air force NAF will prioritise the welfare of its personnel to boost their morale in the line of duty.

Nigeria’s Chief Of Air Staff (CAS), air marshal Sadique Abubakar, says the force will prioritise the welfare of its training instructors, and the provision of infrastructure at the training command in Kaduna state, Nigeria’s north-central.

Air Marshal Abubakar, who spoke when he visited the command, said the welfare of instructors and pilots was paramount to safeguarding assets of the force.

According to him, the training command is very strategic to the air force, hence the reason for his operational visit to identify its challenges, with a view to addressing them.

He added that the military would go after bandits and kidnappers in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to bring back sanity and allow farmers to go to their farms without fear.

lphabet Inc’s YouTube is rolling out a short-form video-streaming service on its platform in the United States as it looks to better compete with rival TikTok in the hugely popular category.

The service, Shorts, let users record mobile friendly vertical videos that can be spiced up with special effects and soundtracks pulled from a music library.

“Starting today and over the next several weeks, we’ll gradually expand our Shorts beta to the U.S.,” YouTube said in a blogpost on Thursday, adding it would weave in newer features on the service like the ability to add text at specific points of the video.

YouTube had rolled out the feature in India in September last year, after TikTok was banned in one of its biggest markets. Shorts currently records more than 6.5 billion daily views globally, YouTube said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria intervened in the foreign exchange market with sales of FOREX to dealers valued at $5.62 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020. This was disclosed in the Q4 2020 economic report published by the Apex bank.

In the period under review, FOREX sales increased by 28.7% compared to $4.37 billion recorded in the previous quarter, while it decreased by 46.1% compared to $9.98 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2019.

Further disaggregation showed that BDC sales and I&E sales rose to $1.36 billion and $1.62 billion from $340 million and $390 million, recorded respectively, in the preceding quarter.

Similarly, Interbank sales and SME intervention increased by 12.2% and 3.1% to $160 million and $310 million, respectively, from the levels recorded in Q3 2020. The Secondary market Intervention Sales (SMIS) and matured swap transactions, however, fell by 12.8% and 62.9% to $1.71 billion and $460 million, compared to the previous quarter.

A cursory look at the data obtained from the CBN showed that the apex has intervened in the Nigeria Foreign Exchange market with a sum of $62.16 billion, recording the highest in Q1 2020 ($13.38 billion) before the spread of the covid pandemic.

What you should know

The Apex bank had suspended the sales of foreign exchange to operators of Bureau de Change in March 2020 after the Association of Bureau de Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) requested that a market holiday be declared on its members’ weekly bidding.

  • CBN however, resumed sales of FOREX to Bureau De Change later in August 2020, which was attributed to the limited resumption of international travel in the country.
  • It is worth noting that the Association of Bureau de Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) has vowed to continue to defend the naira through regulatory compliance and constantly supporting the CBN in achieving a stable exchange rate.
  • Meanwhile, Nairametrics reported that forex turnover in the Investors and Exporters window increased by 359.4% on Wednesday 17th March 2021 to stand at $148.54 million compared to $32.33 million recorded in the previous day.

U.S. Subpoenas Chinese Communications Firms In Probe Of National Security Risks

1

The U.S. Commerce Department said on Wednesday that it has served subpoenas on multiple Chinese companies that provide information and communications technology services in the United States to see if they pose a national security risk.

“Beijing has engaged in conduct that blunts our technological edge and threatens our alliances,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in statement.

The subpoenas will gather information to “allow us to make a determination for possible action that best protects the security of American companies, American workers, and U.S. national security.”

In response, China urged the United States to “stop overstretching the concept of national security to politicize economic issues,” foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a news briefing on Thursday, adding that China will take measures to safeguard the rights and interests of Chinese companies.

The U.S. statement did not name any companies. China’s Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp were targeted by the previous administration of Donald Trump for removal from the U.S. telecoms infrastructure.

President Joe Biden’s administration said last month it plans to allow a Trump-era rule targeting Chinese technology firms deemed a threat to the United States to go into effect despite objections from U.S. businesses.

The Commerce Department issued an interim final rule in the final days of the Trump administration aimed at addressing information and communications technology supply chain concerns and said it would become effective after a 60-day period of public comment.

Last month, the department said it would continue to accept public comment on the rule until March 22, when it would go into effect. The subpoenas would not have an impact on the interim final rule’s timing, a department official said on Wednesday.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and groups representing major industries raised concerns in a letter to the Commerce Department in January that the interim rule gave the government “nearly unlimited authority to intervene in virtually any commercial transaction between U.S. companies and their foreign counterparts that involves technology.”

Business Roundtable, a group representing major U.S. chief executives, said earlier the proposal is “unworkable for U.S. businesses in its current form.”

Chelsea turning into opponents’ nightmare boasts Thomas Tuchel

0

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks and indeed when sleep becomes very deep and sweet, snoring takes the centre stage.

That appears to be the best way to describe Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel’s submission following his team’s progress into the next round of the Champions League.

Tuchel who only recently took charge at the Stamford Bridge following the sacking of former coach Frank Lampard, is happy with the progress his team has made so far and in fact believes the Blues are no longer easy prey for any team.

The former PSG sweat merchant says nobody will want to play Chelsea in the quarters of the Champions league after the edged out Atletico Madrid on 3-0 aggregate.

“I’m pretty sure no one wants to play against us. It’s a super-difficult challenge ahead because we are already in the last eight.

“It’s a big step, but no need to be afraid, we take what we get and prepare as best as possible” he enthused.

Hakim Ziyech and Emerson Palmieri struck as Chelsea overcame 10-man Atletico Madrid 2-0 in Wednesday’s last-16 second-leg clash at Stamford Bridge.

Eagerly awaiting Friday’s last-eight draw, Tuchel insisted Chelsea must fear no one in the competition – and hailed his squad’s bristling spirit as crucial to their continued European chances. Atletico had Stefan Savic sent off late on for elbowing Toni Rudiger off the ball.

Chelsea have registered 11 clean sheets in 13 matches without defeat since Tuchel took the helm from Frank Lampard, and the former bartender and Business Administration graduate of University of Stuttgart would want to see his side maintain the tempo.

Tanzania’s Hassan To Make History As First Female President

0

Samia Suluhu Hassan is a soft-spoken, Muslim woman thrust from the obscure role of vice president to become Tanzania‘s first female leader after John Magufuli’s sudden death.

Under the constitution Hassan, the country’s 61-year-old vice president, will serve the remainder of Magufuli’s second five-year term, which does not expire until 2025.

A former office clerk and development worker, Hassan began her political career in 2000 in her native Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous archipelago, before being elected to the national assembly on mainland Tanzania and assigned a senior ministry.

A ruling party stalwart, she rose through the ranks until being picked by Magufuli as his running mate in his first presidential election campaign in 2015.

The Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) comfortably won and Hassan made history when sworn-in as the country’s first-ever female vice president.

The pair were re-elected last October in a disputed poll the opposition and independent observers said was marred by irregularities.

She would sometimes represent Magufuli on trips abroad but many outside Tanzania had not heard of Hassan until she appeared on national television wearing a black headscarf to announce that Magufuli had died at 61 following a short illness.

In a slow and softly spoken address — a stark contrast to the thundering rhetoric favoured by her predecessor — Hassan solemnly declared 14 days of mourning.

Tanzania is set to swear in first female president Samia Hassan Suhulu, the countrys Vice-President, following the sudden death of President John Magufuli.

Under the constitution Hassan, will serve the remainder of Magufuli’s second five-year term, which expires by 2025. She will also become the first female President in East Africa.

According to Tanzanian Constitution, when the Office of the President becomes vacant by reason of death, resignation, loss of electoral qualifications or inability to perform his functions due to physical infirmity or failure to discharge the duties and functions of the Office of the President, then the Vice President shall be sworn in and become the President for the unexpired period of the term of five years.

Hon. Suluhu assumed office on November 5, 2015, as the 10th vice president of Tanzania. She will not only become Tanzania’s female president but also the first female president in Eastern Africa.

Suluhu will also nominate her possible successor as Vice-President which will then be confirmed by the National Assembly through a 50% vote by all Members of Parliament.

Hassan Suluhu was born in 1960 in Zanzibar. She graduated from high school but has said publicly that her finishing results were poor, and took a clerkship in a government office at 17.

In 1988, after further study, she rose in the ranks to become a development officer in the Zanzibari government.

She was employed as a project manager for the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) and in the 1990s was made executive director of an umbrella body governing non-governmental organisations in Zanzibar.

She was Member of Parliament for the Makunduchi constituency from 2010 to 15 and has been Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office for Union Affairs since 2010.

In 2014, she served as the vice-chairperson for the Constitutional Assembly which was tasked with drafting Tanzania’s new constitution.

CAN urges FG to intervene in Kwara violence

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal Government and Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene in the ongoing violence over Hijab policy in Kwara.

The appeal is contained in a statement by the General Secretary, CAN, Mr Joseph Daramola, in Abuja.

After learning of the governments planto open the schools without resolving the crisis CAN noted that wisdom was required by those in leadership to handle sensitive issues such as that of religion so as not to precipitate war.

CAN however urge AbdulRazaq to give peace a chance in the state by ordering his hoodlums to stop attacking mission schools and churches before the situation degenerated into an unprecedented religious crisis.

Abducted students’ parents protest, demand release of their children

0

The parents of the 39 abducted students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka, Kaduna, have staged a protest, demanding the release of their children.

The protest took place on Thursday at the school premises located along Airport road, Kaduna.

Some of the students of the school also joined in the protest in solidarity with their colleagues who have been in captivity for the past seven days.

Gunmen had invaded the school last Thursday at about 11:30pm, kidnapping 39 students.

They carried a banner with photos of all the abducted students, as well as placards demanding the release of the students.

They also offered prayers in the church and mosque located within the school premises for divine intervention from God.

Some of the parents, who spoke with journalists, lamented that since the abduction, they had not heard any information from the government and the school authorities about efforts being made to free their children.

One of the parents, Sunday Musa, whose daughter is among the abducted students, urged the government to do everything possible to free the students.
