10 Great tips your health will appreciate

0

When it comes to health and nutrition, we all get confused because of the so many information out there. Even qualified experts often seem to hold opposing opinions.

Yet, despite all the disagreements, a number of wellness tips are well supported by research.

Here are health and nutrition tips that are actually based on good science.

1. Don’t drink sugar calories

Sugary drinks are among the most fattening items you can put into your body.

This is because your brain doesn’t measure calories from liquid sugar the same way it does for solid food.

Therefore, when you drink soda, you end up eating more total calories.

Sugary drinks are strongly associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and many other health problems.

2. Avoid processed junk food (eat real food instead)

Processed junk food is incredibly unhealthy. These foods have been engineered to trigger your pleasure centres, so they trick your brain into overeating — even promoting food addiction in some people.

They’re usually low in fibre, protein, and micronutrients but high in unhealthy ingredients like added sugar and refined grains. Thus, they provide mostly empty calories.

3. Get enough sleep

The importance of getting enough quality sleep cannot be overstated.

Poor sleep can drive insulin resistance, disrupt your appetite hormones, and reduce your physical and mental performance.

What’s more, poor sleep is one of the strongest individual risk factors for weight gain and obesity.

4. Drink some water, especially before meals

Drinking enough water can have numerous benefits.

Surprisingly, it can boost the number of calories you burn.

Two studies note that it can increase metabolism by 24–30% over 1–1.5 hours. This can amount to 96 additional calories burned if you drink 8.4 cups (2 litres) of water per day.

5. Eat vegetables and fruits

Vegetables and fruits are loaded with prebiotic fibre, vitamins, minerals, and many antioxidants, some of which have potent biological effects.

Studies show that people who eat the most vegetables and fruits live longer and have a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other illnesses.

6. Do some cardio

Doing aerobic exercise, also called cardio, is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health.

It’s particularly effective at reducing belly fat, the harmful type of fat that builds up around your organs. Reduced belly fat should lead to major improvements in metabolic health.

7. Don’t smoke or do drugs, and only drink in moderation

If you smoke or abuse drugs, tackle those problems first. Diet and exercise can wait.

If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation and consider avoiding it completely if you tend to drink too much.

8. Minimize your sugar intake

Added sugar is one of the worst ingredients in the modern diet, as large amounts can harm your metabolic health.

High sugar intake is linked to numerous ailments, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and many forms of cancer.

9. Lift heavy things

Lifting weights is one of the best things you can do to strengthen your muscles and improve your body composition.

It also leads to massive improvements in metabolic health, including improved insulin sensitivity.

The best approach is to lift weights, but doing bodyweight exercises can be just as effective.

10. Use plenty of herbs and spices

Many incredibly healthy herbs and spices exist.

For example, ginger and turmeric both have potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, leading to various health benefits.

Due to their powerful benefits, you should try to include as many herbs and spices as possible in your diet.

11. Take care of your relationships

Social relationships are incredibly important not only for your mental well-being but also your physical health.

Studies show that people who have close friends and family are healthier and live much longer than those who do not.

12. If you have excess belly fat, get rid of it

Belly fat is particularly harmful.

It accumulates around your organs and is strongly linked to metabolic disease.

For this reason, your waist size may be a much stronger marker of your health than your weight.

Cutting carbs and eating more protein and fiber are all excellent ways to get rid of belly fat.

7 common risk factors that can contribute to infertility

0

We know that women choose to start their families later in life as they are focusing on establishing their careers before having babies, but age is only one of the factors affecting fertility. So, what else could be causing these declining fertility rates?

While infertility is no blame game, it’s important to know that the problem doesn’t always solely lie with the female partner. There are many factors that can cause infertility in men as well.

See Also: Common foods that will give you energy

The Risk Factors Which Could Contribute To A Couples Infertility Include:

  • Age. A woman’s fertility declines with age, especially from her mid-30s. This is due to the number and quality of her eggs declining and to health problems that may interfere with fertility. In addition, the sperm count of older men is often lower, reducing fertility and the chances of conception.
  • Being overweight. If an individual is overweight and lives a sedentary lifestyle with little exercise, this may increase the risk of infertility. In addition, a man’s sperm count may be affected if he is overweight.
  • Being underweight. Women who have eating disorders, such as anorexia or bulimia, are at risk of fertility problems, as are women who follow a very low calorie or restrictive diet.
  • Tobacco use. If either partner is a smoker, a couple’s chances of falling pregnant are reduced. Miscarriages are more frequent in couples who smoke. Smoking can increase the risk of erectile dysfunction and reduce sperm count in men.
  • Alcohol use. Drinking alcohol increases the risk of birth defects in babies, and may also make it more difficult to become pregnant. For men, heavy alcohol use can cause a decrease in sperm count and mobility.
  • Underlying health conditions such as large uterine fibroids can affect a woman’s chance of falling pregnant.
  • The side effects of some medication can affect one’s fertility. This is why it is important for both partners to mention any prescription medication they are taking, including herbal medicines, to their doctor so that alternative treatment options can be discussed.

Emma Coronel tried her hands on social media influencing and reality television very much unlike other people in her situation. She shares a set of 9 year twins with her husband.

Her arrest is said to likely further complicate already complicated relations between the Joe Biden administration and his Mexican counterpart Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and comes as security cooperation between Mexico and the US appear to have cooled.

Shasha Crisis: Prices of perishable goods triple in Ibadan

0

The recent crisis that engulfed Shasha Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital is causing scarcity of perishable goods in the ancient city.

The scarcity has also led to the increment in prices of perishable goods.

Recall that Shasha Market, which is the major market for perishable goods like pepper, onions, tomatoes and other food ingredients in Ibadan, was penultimate Friday engulfed with crisis.

The market located in Akinyele local government area of Oyo State, has been in existence for over three decades.

Majority of those who sell tomatoes, pepper and onions at retail prices in some parts of Ibadan such as Opopo-Yeosa, Ita-Merin, Sango and Oje buy at wholesale from Shasha Market.

Though checks revealed that some of the sellers of perishable goods have temporarily relocated to an open place at Bodija market, prices have skyrocketed.

Investigation revealed that a size of tomato that usually goes for two thousand naira before the crisis is now sold at the rate of four thousand naira.

The same scenario was observed by our correspondent at the temporary space occupied by those who sell onions and pepper.

An Ibadan indigene, identified as Mr. Daramola, told our correspondent at the weekend that, “I grew up to know the Shasha Market. When we were young, my mother usually went to Shasha to buy pepper and sell at Opopo-Yeosa. She will leave around 5.am even before we wake up.

“She is not the only one, the women who sell at Opopo-Yeosa, Ita-Merin and other markets usually go there to buy things. I am talking about 80s, over thirty years ago and the market has been in existence before then.”

A civil servant who spoke with our correspondent at the weekend noted that the increment was a result of the crisis which led to the closure of the market.

“Things have gone up now. Since last Friday, the prices of perishable goods have increased. I bought this thing last week at the rate of N100, they told me that it is N150 now. Just last week.

“You see, it is because of the crisis, some Hausa said that they are going back. They are the ones bringing these things, the market is closed, where will they sell it? Those perishable goods are scarce now.”

A sociologist at the University of Ibadan, Mr. Saheed Isiaka said that the retail price of perishable goods in his area has increased.

He said, “Yes, I noticed it, though I have not been to Bodija market to see the differences, but buying tomatoes and the likes from retailers in my area took a drastic turn last Friday evening.”

Tackle insecurity or get impeached – CSOs warn Buhari

0

A coalition of 42 civil society organizations, on Monday, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to tackle insecurity or risk impeachment.

The CSOs warned that they would prevail on the National Assembly to trigger the impeachment process if Buhari failed to act.

The coalition includes BudgiT Foundation Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth & Advancement (YIAGA), Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) and others.

Mr Jaiye Gaskia, of United Action for Democracy, UAD while delivering the brief on behalf of the CSOs, condemned the reports of alleged payment of ransom to bandits in exchange for the release of kidnapped Nigerians.

“Where the President fails to fulfil his constitutional duties as stated above, we demand he step aside or the National Assembly initiates impeachment proceedings against him on grounds of gross misconduct as provided for in Section 143 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement reads in part.

The CSOs also urged the government to seek international cooperation in the fight against criminals and terrorists.

Furthermore, the CSOs also condemned the statement by the Minister of Defence, Bashir Salihi Magashi who called on Nigerians to defend themselves.

“The government, through the Minister of Defence, has instead callously abdicated its responsibility and called Nigerian citizens ‘cowards’ and urged Nigerians to defend themselves.

“We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, what has now become the government’s standard state policy of using taxpayers’ money to pay terrorists thereby funding and encouraging terrorism and criminality.

“President Buhari and his government have failed in their primary duty under Section 14 2(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which is ensuring the security and welfare of the Nigerian people. Instead, under their watch, Nigeria is now a catalogue of bloodletting,” they added.

Residents desert homes, tension heightens in Orlu as military take over community

0

Residents of Orlu council area of Imo State have reportedly deserted their homes as the military continues a search for the camps of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

It was gathered that the presence of the military has crippled economic activities in the area.

The Imo state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Barr. C. O. C Akaolisa, while speaking on the crisis over the weekend, said that the government deployed the military to intervene on the extrajudicial killings perpetrated by members of the ESN.

Akaolisa disclosed that the government got an intelligent report of IPOB leading attacks on Orlu people, as well as the government on the pretext of looking for Fulani herdsmen.

He said, “the ESN members have taken the laws into their own hands by killing over 10 policemen and two prominent sons of Orlu, Ignatius Obiezu and Emmanuel Okeke and collected their hilux vehicles.

“We heard that Nnamdi Kanu is celebrating the activities of his men in Orlu but this is absolutely wrong.

“We won’t fold our arms and watch these boys send us packing in our own state. That was why we sent the military to restore law and order in the areas.”

It was gathered from a source that the military surveillance helicopter which hovered on a daily basis in Orlu and neighbouring LGAs, had caused more panic among the people.

In Orsuihitteukwa, a neighbouring community in Orsu LGA, the source admitted that the soldiers were not harmful but expressed concern on the heavy ammunition in their possession and the hovering of helicopters over their houses.

The source further said, “truly, the presence of the military has, to a large extent, calmed the situation. But I urge the leaders in the zone to address the security instability in our zone. This is not healthy for the progress and advancement of the biggest Senatorial Zone in Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the neighbouring LGAs, including Orsu, Njaba and Ideato-north, where the ESN members reportedly ran to, had been taken over by the military.

Abuja crash: We thought it was a bomb blast – Residents recount near-death experience

1

The tranquillity that characterises Nassau Village in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, was on Sunday disturbed when a jet belonging to the Nigerian Air Force crash-landed in the area.

Noise from aircraft is not strange to residents of the village, being one of the settlements that bordered the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport.

But the Sunday experience was not only strange, it was a near-death experience for them.

It started with a loud and unusual noise from the ill-fated aircraft, followed by a loud explosion and then billows of thick smoke and fire.

By the time it all subsided, seven souls have been lost.

The jet en route Minna in Niger State crashed close to the runway of the Abuja airport after reporting engine failure.

The plane was said to be on its way to Minna to rescue 27 students and 15 staff of Government Science College, Kagara, who were kidnapped on Wednesday.

As of the time our correspondents arrived the scene of the accident which was said to have occurred at about 11am, distraught residents who were watching rescue operations from a safe distance were telling stories of how it happened and how they were saved by luck.

One of the residents, who witnessed the accident, Ebube Onyedi, told our correspondents that they initially took the loud sound that characterised the crash for a bomb blast

“The accident happened around some minutes to 11am this (Sunday) morning and it caused confusion in Nassau, which as you can see is one of the communities bordering the Abuja airport.

“Many of us ran out of our houses when we heard the explosion. It really caused so much panic, as initially, people thought it was a bomb blast,” he struggled to say while still catching his breath.

Another resident, who simply identified himself as Gboyega, said he saw the aircraft struggling to land but it eventually crashed and burst into flames.

Gboyega applauded the pilot of the aircraft, as he stated that the pilot averted what would have turned out to be “a greater casualty figure.”

He said, “The pilot tried not to crash the plane on buildings because it was almost falling on some structures before it eventually dropped where there was no building.

“It burst into flames after crashing and people in their respective homes around the area ran out in fear.

“If not for the pilot’s efforts, we would have seen a greater casualty figure.”

Another resident of the area, Sunkonmi Toyheeb, said he was working in a building in the community when the aircraft crashed.

“We were among the first set of people who rushed to the accident scene because I was working in a building close to the areas where the aircraft fell.

“The fire service men tried, well may be because this place is close to the airport. But before they could put out the fire, the people inside the plane have been burnt beyond recognition.”

Another eyewitness, Ruth Nnaemeka, said the sight of the crash had continued to make her shiver.

She noted that although responders from the airport rushed to the scene in good time, they could not save the occupants of the aircraft from being burnt.

She said, “I saw the plane before it crashed. At first, it hovered as if it wanted to land and before you know what was happening, it moved up again into the sky.

“It then kept swinging from one side to the other. In fact, the sight was terrible. It tried moving towards the airport where other airplanes use to land.

“From afar, I saw it going down and at a point it disappeared and the next thing that followed was a bang which led to the eruption of fire and thick smoke.

“And I was like, ‘Oh God, these are humans burning in this fire.’ The situation got me scared and worried and I couldn’t eat after seeing what happened to that plane this morning.

“Fire service men and ambulances rushed down as early as they could because this place is close to the airport, but they could not save the passengers from being burnt because the explosion was huge.”

Officials of the Ministry of Aviation said the NAF jet crashed after it had reported an engine failure at about 10.39am.

They said firefighters from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the National Emergency Management Agency were among first responders to the crash site.

“A Nigerian Air Force NAF201 B350 aircraft departed Abuja at 1033UTC with six persons on board including two crew,” the Director, Public Affairs, FMA, James Oduadu, stated in a brief update about the accident.

He added, “Aircraft reported engine failure at time 1039 and crash landed on the final approach path of Abuja Runway 22 at time 1048UTC.

“Fire services are already at the scene of the accident. All six persons on board reported dead.”

The incident was also confirmed by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, who identified the aircraft as King Air 350.

He said via his official Twitter handle that “A military aircraft King Air 350 has just crashed short of our Abuja runway after reporting engine failure enroute Minna.

“It appears to be fatal. We should remain calm and wait for the outcome of investigation by the military, while we pray for the departed soul souls.”

The General Manager, Public Affairs, FAAN, Henrietta Yakubu, told one of our correspondents that the authority had to respond by sending its fire fighters to the accident scene.

She, however, stated that the accident would be investigated and further updates provided by the NAF as the aircraft involved was not a commercial jet.

Also, the spokesperson, Accident Investigation Bureau, Tunji Oketunbi, said the accident involved a military aircraft and the AIB would not investigate such situation based on its mandates.

He, however, noted that the AIB would only investigate the matter when called upon by the military to be involved in the investigations.

Okorocha will be prosecuted if found culpable – Imo police

0

The police command in Imo says Rochas Okorocha, former governor of the state, will be prosecuted if found culpable of any offence.

Okorocha was arrested on Sunday for unsealing a property seized by the state government on Friday.

Thereafter, the senator representing Imo west was escorted off the property by a detachment of police officers.

Royal Palm Hotel, the property reportedly owned by the senator’s wife, is said to be under investigation by the Imo government, hence the sealing.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme on Monday, Orlando Ikeokwu, Imo police spokesman, said the lawmaker was invited for questioning and was later released on Sunday night.

“He was released later at night. If anybody is found culpable, definitely, he will be charged to court,” the spokesman said.

“If investigation proves that he [Okorocha] has committed an offence, he will be charged to court.”

In a recorded interview with Channels Television on Monday, Okorocha alleged that police officers watched as thugs attacked his associates with machetes.

“I came back from an occasion and proceeded to Royal Palm Hotel to enquire what actually happened. On getting there, I saw a lot of thugs,” the former governor had said.

“They started molesting, cutting my boys, shooting. But the police were there too, and they did nothing and said nothing.

“They were macheting… my orderlies rushed me to a room and locked me up. Those boys had teargas, police also were throwing teargas. As they were advancing, the police were backing them up; and they were coming and were shooting.”

FG, governors to meet over petrol, electricity prices

0

The federal government will meet with state governors and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Thursday to find a solution to the issue of petrol pricing.

The minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, announced the meeting date to journalists on Monday at the end of a meeting between the federal government and organised labour.

NAN reports that the meeting is continuation of the series of meetings held in 2020 to persuade labour unions from embarking on industrial action over the increase in the price of petrol and electricity.

Ngige said that the meeting with organised labour was peaceful and productive.

“As for the issue of the price of PMS, it is a work in progress. The governors are to discuss this on Thursday at the National Economic Council and hopefully there will be a way out of the situation,” he said.

He also said that both sides have resolved to allow more time in order to look into ways of tinkering with the template for fixing domestic fuel price.

Ngige said on the issue of electricity tariff that the report was well recieved by both sides and the committee was asked to continue further work on grey areas.

He said that the meeting with labour leaders has been adjourned till April, after the Easter celebration.

Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Ayuba Wabba, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said the union was able to point out areas of the report on PMS pricing that it was not in agreement with.

Wabba also said labour is not comfortable with the import pricing method in use.

“This means that we import 100 percent of all the PMS used in the country, whereas we have refineries,” he said.

“The reports were presented and we pointed out areas that we are not comfortable with and also made some suggestions which will form the basis of decisions on the matter.

In 2020, the federal government adopted a price modulation system where crude oil prices are fixed in line with happenings in the global market.

This has resulted in an increase in the price of petrol, a development that labour leaders have kicked against.
