Joe Biden is already making serious errors, says Mitch McConnell

0

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell accused Joe Biden of taking “several big steps in the wrong direction” on his first day in office, suggesting the new administration should focus on “creating good-paying American jobs, not sacrificing our people’s livelihoods to liberal symbolism.”

Speaking from the Senate floor, the minority leader said the new president should “remember that he does not owe his election to the far left.”

Among the first actions of the Biden administration were executive orders aimed at tackling the COVID-19 crisis, rejoining the Paris Climate Accord and protecting gay and transgender people from discrimination in workplaces, schools and other areas.

The proposals were widely supported by Democrats and rights groups and enacted key policy pledges from the 2020 campaign that won Biden the largest ever number of votes in a presidential election.

Revealing details of the measures, Biden said there was “no time to waste when it comes to tackling the crises we face,” adding: “That’s why today, I am heading to the Oval Office to get right to work delivering bold action and immediate relief for American families.”

Biden also took action to block the building of the hugely controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline between the U.S. and Canada, addressing concerns from environmental groups and indigenous leaders.

“On the Biden administration’s very first day, it took several big steps in the wrong direction,” McConnell said, condemning his actions revoking a key pipeline permit, rejoining the environmental agreement and firing a Trump-appointed general counsel to the National Labor Relations Board.

McConnell said: “If and when our Democratic friends depart from common sense, when they retreat from common ground, when their proposals would harm the common good—then we’ll use the power the American people have given us to push for what is right.

“The president can and should refocus his administration on creating good-paying American jobs, not sacrificing our people’s livelihoods to liberal symbolism.”

McConnell also proposed delaying the start of Donald Trump’s impeachment trial to February to give the former president time to prepare his case.

Several other Republican lawmakers have expressed opposition to the first steps of the new administration.

Wisconsin Representative Bryan Steil repeated a familiar trope from the Trump campaign team that Biden was “supporting far-left priorities” with his initial actions.

“On day one, Biden has set the tone for what is to come in his administration: legislating by executive orders, championing massive spending bills, and supporting far-left priorities that reverse years of economic growth and job creation,” he said.

Florida Representative Kat Cammack offered a similar critique: “President Biden’s inaugural address focused heavily on unity, bringing the nation together after the division we’ve experienced.

“The new EOs he just signed, however, cater to the Left, ignoring the steps necessary to move America forward.

I lost my sight after SARS officials tortured me – Man tells Rivers panel

A man, Nwaokoro Nicholas, has alleged that he lost his sight 11 years ago after operatives of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, beat him to pulp near the Olu Obasanjo Police Station in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Nicholas, who testified before the Justice Chukwunenye Uriri (retd.) led Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Police brutality and related offences, said trouble started when he packed his bus behind a SARS operational vehicle at the police station.

He said he had nine surgeries on both eyes in Nigeria and India without any luck.

He stated, “As I came out of the police station, I walked straight to where I packed my bus beside a SARS vehicle. As I made to enter the bus, the policemen came after me, there was bashing everywhere.

“Some of them used their rifle on my back. One other person hit me in the face. I couldn’t see again. Later, the policemen from the police station rescued me.”

Nicholas demanded N8m as compensation to enable him to go for further treatment.

Nigeria recorded Foreign Direct Investment totalling $90m in October according to figures obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria on Wednesday.

The CBN disclosed in its monthly economic report that in the review period, capital inflow declined by 71.4 per cent due to tight global financial conditions, as countries, particularly, the developed economies struggled with the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Part of the report stated, “Capital importation data showed that inflow declined to $0.19bn in the review period, below $0.67bn in September 2020.

According to the report, capital importation by nature of investment was dominated by portfolio investment, which accounted for 41.5 per cent, followed by production/manufacturing (16.3 per cent), financing (13.4 per cent), trading (9.6 per cent) and agriculture (eight per cent).

A breakdown of capital by originating country showed that the United Kingdom took the lead with 25.3 per cent, the Netherlands and Singapore accounted for 14.8 per cent and 8.3 per cent respectively of the total inflow, while by destination, Lagos State, Abuja and Enugu were the top recipients of the inflow at $0.11bn, $0.07bn and $0.01bn respectively.

Man United’s Pogba one of the best when in form, says Ferdinand

0

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may not be fully convinced Paul Pogba can hold down the central midfield role but his recent performances prove that when the Frenchman is in form there are few better, former defender Rio Ferdinand said.

Pogba scored with a blistering left-foot shot as United defeated Fulham 2-1 on Wednesday to return to the top of the Premier League table. He also scored the winner against Burnley last week.

Ferdinand said Pogba’s ego would have “taken a battering” as playmaker Bruno Fernandes took the plaudits, while he was struggling for regular first-team opportunities earlier in the season.

The former Gunners defender is a big fan of the left-sided England international and considers Gabriel Martinelli to be “one of the best talents”

Bukao Saka “has the potential to be a world-class player” says Lauren, with the former Arsenal defender also hailing Gabriel Martinelli as “one of the best talents in the Premier League”.

The Gunners have shown considerable faith in youth this season, with Mikel Arteta forced into changes after overseeing the club’s worst start to a campaign since 1974-75.

Seasoned veterans such as Mesut Ozil and Sokratis have been forced out, allowing academy graduates and youngsters to prove their worth.

Gov Yahaya Bello: COVID-19 vaccine is meant to kill Nigerians

0

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has rejected the use of COVID-19 vaccine, claiming the jabs are meant to kill people.

Nigeria is currently going through the second and more deadly wave of COVID-19 pandemic with an average of 1,000 cases daily being announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.

Nigerian authorities have also announced that the vaccine will soon arrive the country, promising that whichever vaccines that are approved by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 will be safe for Nigerians.

President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Prof Yemi Osinbajo will receive the vaccine on live TV, joining other world leaders such as Joe Biden, Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, among others, who are encouraging their citizens to embrace its use.

However, the Kogi State number one citizen sees things differently. While addressing a crowd in a viral video, Bello said the vaccine is meant to kill people instead of being a source of healing.

“Vaccines are being produced in less than one year of COVID-19. There is no vaccine yet for HIV, malaria, cancer, headache and for several other diseases that are killing us. They want to use the (COVID-19) vaccines to introduce the disease that will kill you and us. God forbid,” he said.

“We should draw our minds back to what happened in Kano during the Pfizer polio vaccines that crippled and killed our children. We have learned our lessons.

“If they say they are taking the vaccines in the public, allow them take their vaccines. Don’t say I said you should not take it but if you want to take it open your eyes before you take the vaccines.”

Meanwhile, the NCDC, on Tuesday reported 1,617 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, with Lagos high on the list with 776 positive cases.

Kaduna, Kwara and the Federal Capital Territory also recorded high numbers with the agency announcing, 147, 131 and 102 respectively.

The country now has a total of 112,004 confirmed cases, 89,939 discharged patients and 1,449 deaths.

Sonko hits back after Uhuru confesses to orchestrating his impeachment

0

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has hit back at President Uhuru Kenyatta for criticising his leadership, calling the Head of State “a failed President with nothing to show for eight years in power”.

This comes after President Kenyatta admitted that he had instigated the removal of Sonko as the city governor over his confrontational leadership style that risked bringing services in the capital to a grinding halt.

Stung by the criticism, the former City Hall boss told off the president for focusing on the failures of his administration rather than his own.

The former Makadara MP challenged Mr Kenyatta to instead own up to Kenyans that he had allegedly been incompetent and incapable of running a country from the first day, accusing him of only succeeding in holding independent institutions at ransom while harassing and tormenting leaders who differ with him.

In a scathing attack on the Head of State, Mr Sonko criticised President Kenyatta’s administration for having nothing to show apart from unprecedented unemployment, poverty and hopelessness in millions of Kenyans despite borrowing over Sh8 trillion shillings in the last eight years.

He went on to point out that Mr Kenyatta has now resorted to selling “false hope” to Kenyans in the name of the handshake and the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) as promises by his administration remained a mirage.

Mozambican President Hands Control to Army in Insurgency Battle

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has put the military in charge of combating a growing Islamic State-linked insurgency in the natural gas-rich Cabo Delgado province after limited success by the police force.

Nyusi on Jan. 14 promoted army general Eugenio Mussa to chief of staff of the military, according to a statement from the Presidency, and was earlier named as the new commander of the nation’s northern operational command post in Mueda.

Mussa, a confidant of Nyusi since 2012 when he was defense minister, replaces Lázaro Menete chief of staff. He had been in charge since October 2017, the month of the first attack.

Mozambique has struggled to contain the insurgency that has left more than 2,500 people dead and caused 570,000 to flee. The violence this year prompted Total SE to evacuate workers from its $20 billion liquefied natural gas project as attacks encroached on what is Africa’s biggest private investment.
