The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola has announced that the Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday 25th, Monday 28th December 2020 and Friday, January 1st, 2021 as public holidays to mark the Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year Celebrations respectively.

This disclosure was made by the Minister in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Shuaib M.L. Belgore.

The Minister who made the announcement today felicitated with Christians and all Nigerians both at home and abroad on this year’s Christmas and New Year Celebrations.

He called on all Christians to adopt the creed of Christ on faith, hope and love and urged Nigerians to adhere strictly to the Covid-19 protocols and guidelines, as stipulated by relevant authorities, during and after the festivities to curb the spreads of the virus, as the nation moves into the second wave of pandemic.

While admonishing all Nigerians to remain focused, determined, patient and patriotic, Aregbesola expressed confidence that the year 2021 would be a better year for all Nigerians and therefore urged Christians to use the period to pray for Nigeria.

What they are saying

The Minister said:

“We must emulate the life of humility, service, compassion, patience, peace and righteousness that the birth and Ministry of Jesus Christ signified, that will be the best way to know Christ and celebrate his birth.

“We should know that peace and security are critical factors needed to enable Government to accomplish its mission of revitalizing the economy, improving Foreign Direct Investment as well as generating employment opportunities for over 100 million Nigerian youths in the next 10 years.

“The Government remains committed to the fight against banditry, kidnappings & other crimes and criminalities in the country, however, Nigerians need to support the efforts of the security agencies by providing them with information that will enhance intelligence gathering.

What you should know: The Federal Government, however, declared Monday a public holiday, since Boxing Day, typically December 26th fell on a Saturday this year. Hence, the following working day was marked down for citizens to celebrate the holiday as part of the yuletide.

NIMC: Our website didn’t crash, we are upgrading it

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, says it is upgrading its website for optimum performance as many Nigerians jostle to obtain their National Identity Numbers.

It also said the site, nimc.gov.ng, did not crash, adding that the site would be restored today (Tuesday).

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Communication Commission had last week ordered telecommunications companies to deactivate telephone lines of subscribers who failed to link their phones to their NIN within two weeks.

Thousands of Nigerians had trooped to NIMC offices all over the country on Monday for their NIN registration, thereby flouting the Covid-19 protocol put in place by the government.

The development forced the NIMC to shut down its offices in most parts of the country on Monday.

The government later bowed to pressure by extending the deadline to January 19, 2021 for subscribers with NIN and February 9 for those without NIN.

But many Nigerians who rushed to the NIMC website have been left stranded due to server downtime.

Speaking with The PUNCH on Tuesday morning, NIMC Spokesman, Kayode Adegoke, said, “Our site didn’t crash. We are upgrading the site, we are migrating it to a higher and better platform where information security will be topnotch.

“More users will be able to be on the site per time. It will also be able to accommodate more information. Information security is key. The site will be back today.”

The NIMC also said it would adopt a number-issuing style as it reopens its centres nationwide from Tuesday to ensure effective crowd control.

As of October, the total number of mobile network connections was 207.58 million, but currently, only 43 million Nigerians have NIN, thus 164 million telephone users are at the risk of being deactivated on December 31.

According to the NIMC, the NIN is used to tie all records about an individual into the National Identity Database and is also used as a valid means of establishing or verifying individual identity.

Russia denies role in U.S cyber attacks

The Kremlin on Monday denied any role in recent cyberattacks on the United States, saying American accusations that Russia was behind a major security breach lacked evidence.

US lawmakers over the weekend urged a tough response to a huge cyber attack on government agencies and criticised US President Donald Trump’s unwillingness to point the finger at Russia which has been widely blamed for the hack.

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the public debate in Washington about the breaches “has nothing to do with us”.

Russia is not involved in these attacks,” Peskov told reporters Monday.

The attackers managed to breach computer networks using enterprise management network software made by the Texas-based IT company SolarWinds.

US government agencies including the Treasury were among those reportedly affected, but it also hit targets worldwide with the list of victims still emerging, researchers say.

“Any accusations of Russia’s involvement are absolutely unfounded and are a continuation of blind Russophobia,” Peskov said.

Iran-Linked Group Claims To Hack Israeli Defense Firm, Releases Employee Data

An Iran-linked hacking group on Sunday claimed to have breached the Israeli Aerospace Industries’ computer systems, in the latest in a series of cyberattacks on Israeli firms.

The group, known as Pay2Key, revealed its alleged hack in a tweet.

The hacking group, which has been tied to Iran, also mentioned a systems administrator at the defense contractor’s Elta subsidiary by name, Koby Fiada, revealing his password.

The Israeli cyber security firm ClearSky, which released a report on Pay2Key three days before the alleged IAI hack, said the group was likely an offshoot of an Iranian hacking cooperative known as Fox Kitten.

“We estimate that this campaign is part of the ongoing cyber confrontation between Israel and Iran, with the most recent wave of attacks causing significant damage to some of the affected companies,” ClearSky wrote last Thursday.

According to Karine Nahon, an Israeli information scientist, Pay2Key released employee data files, on Sunday night, on the so-called dark web, parts of the internet that are not indexed by search engines.

Sign Of The Times: Christmas Festivities, Sales Reach Saudi Arabia

Christmas trees and glittery ornaments are for sale at a Saudi gift shop, a once-unthinkable sight in the cradle of Islam where all public non-Muslim worship is banned.

In recent years, festive sales have gradually crept into the capital Riyadh, a sign of loosening social restrictions after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pledged to steer the conservative Gulf kingdom toward an “open, moderate Islam.”

I didn’t ever imagine I’d see this” in Saudi Arabia, a Riyadh resident told AFP at the shop selling trees, Santa Claus outfits as well as tinsel, baubles and other ornaments.

“I am surprised,” said the resident, declining to be identified.

Until barely three years ago, it was almost impossible to sell such items openly in Saudi Arabia, but authorities have been clipping the powers of the clerical establishment long notorious for enforcing Islamic traditions.

For decades, Christmas sales were largely underground, and Christians from the Philippines, Lebanon and other countries celebrated behind closed doors or in expat enclaves.

“It was very difficult to find such” Christmas items in the kingdom, said Mary, a Lebanese expat based in Riyadh who preferred to be identified by her first name.

“Many of my friends used to buy them from Lebanon or Syria and sneak them into the country,” she said.

In 2018, amid Prince Mohammed’s liberalization drive, Saudi customs authorities warned on Twitter that Christmas trees were forbidden from entering the country.

In a sign of the changing times, the Riyadh shop manager, Omar, who declined to provide his surname, said this year his store sold Christmas items.

Saudi Arabia is the custodian of Mecca and Medina, Islam’s two holiest sites.

Breaking: FG Directs Cancellation Of NIN Retrieval Charge Across All Networks

The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to remove the N20 USSD fee imposed on subscribers for retrieval of the National Identification Number (NIN).

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, who issued the directive, said it’s with immediate effect.

According to a statement by his spokesperson, Mrs Uwa Suleiman, on Friday, the minister’s directive is an intervention aimed at making the process easier and affordable.

“The Minister’s directive which takes immediate effect is an intervention aimed at making the process easier and affordable,” the statement said.

“In a letter conveying the implementation of the directive, the Executive Vice Chairman NCC and the Director-General of NIMC informed Dr Pantami that the relevant authorities had met with, and negotiated a waiver with the Mobile Network Operators in that regard.

“By this waiver, all Nigerians, subscribers and applicants can access the service using the *346# code for their NIN retrieval at no charge for the duration of the NIN/SIM Card integration exercise.”

Recall that the Federal Government had earlier directed that all NINs be integrated with Subscriber Identification Modules for security purposes.

It directed network operators to ask all their subscribers to provide valid NIN to update their records and suspend SIM registration. It gave December 31, 2020, as deadline for the exercise, after which operators are to block SIM cards with no NIN.

The move sparked outrage as Nigerians questioned the rationale behind the short notice, insisting the timeframe was too short.

The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, called on the NCC to extend the deadline.
