Eastern Security Network: Igbo Elders Move Against Nnamdi Kanu

0

South East elders, under the aegis of Conference of Igbo Elders for Peace and Development, have condemned the formation of a new security outfit in the region by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

The elders also tasked South-East Governors in the region and Ohanaeze Ndigbo to rise against the IPOB action

The group further tasked the Governors and Igbo leaders to lead way for the region’s security similar to Amotekun in the South West

Igbo elders decried the security outfit, describing it as illegal asking the governors to immediately move against the action.

The elders also called on the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo not only to denounce Kanu’s action but advise people of the region against falling prey to Kanu’s illegal activities.

Also, they charged the “South-East governors and businessmen in the region to pull resources together and form a security outfit like Amotekun or civilian JTF backed by law, which can be controlled and be effective.”

The Igbo elders said while they recognize the desire of the people to protect themselves through community policing, given the worsening security problems in the country, it must be done within the country’s established laws.

The South East elders operating under the aegis of Conference of Igbo Elders for Peace and Development, in a statement, said Kanu’s action does not have their blessings and asked Nigerians to see his action as personal and not representing the region.

In the statement signed by Dr Festus Edochie, National President and Barrister (Mrs) Esther Amadi, National Secretary of the group, the elders said its attention to the inglorious activities of Mr Kanu was drawn to a trending video of some misguided youths armed with prohibited firearms and dangerous weapons.

“We observe with utmost shock and concern a disturbing video of a group of some misguided youths codenamed Eastern Security Network, bearing arms and circulating on social media.

“In the said video, the group which claimed to be operating somewhere in Anambra State carried Ak-47 and other dangerous weapons under the guise of providing security against violent crimes being committed by herdsmen in the region.

“We condemn this group and its activities in its entirety and call on all South-East governors and well-meaning Ndigbo to come out and condemn this act of criminality being sponsored by a self-appointed leader of a proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” they said in the statement.

The Igbo elders said, “While we recognize perfectly the yearning and desire of every Nigerian today for community policing and self-security due to the insecurity in the country, we insist that it must be done in accordance with the law of the land and by the right people who are legally empowered to do so.”

“No group or individual has the legal right to bear prohibited firearms of that nature without the proper backing of the law. Hence we must all rise in the South East to not only condemn but also distant ourselves from this act without delay,” they added.

“No doubt, the current security architecture of Nigeria has failed and Nigerians deserve to protect themselves but that must be done within the premise of the law.

“We are Nigerians and cannot form a parallel security arm that bears prohibited firearms for any reason in our region.

“It is not in the place of IPOB to organize such a group armed with automatic weapons, no lawful country or citizen will support that, even the civilian Joint Task Force which is supported by law with members assisting in fighting terrorism in Borno State and other parts of North East don’t use automatic weapons.

“In the South West, also Amotekun which is lawfully set up by the authorities in the region does not use automatic firearms.

“Bearing prohibited firearms under any guise is unacceptable,

“Only Dane guns and pump-action rifles can be licensed in Nigeria. We have restrictions in Nigeria on the use of firearms and nobody is above this law. Criminals use these illegally,” the statement further read.

They noted that “The obvious gap in our national security notwithstanding, a proscribed organization like IPOB does not have the right to arm a group of young men with automatic weapons in the name of a security network or any nomenclature. It is totally unacceptable and must be resisted by all Ndigbo of goodwill.

“We are therefore calling on all the South-East governors and businessmen in the region to pull resources together and form a security outfit like Amotekun or civilian JTF backed by law, which can be controlled and be effective.

“Finally, we wish to call on the South-East governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo and other well-meaning groups to come out to condemn the act of criminality that may spark unrest in the region thus portraying Ndigbo as bad and lawless people.

“We further appeal to all Nigerians not to see this act of criminality as an Igbo agenda, but a deliberate act by a fugitive criminal, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to gain popularity and earn his daily bread from his sponsors,” the statement further read.

Alaska Health Workers Experience Allergic Reaction To Pfizer’s COVID Vaccine

0

A health worker in Alaska suffered a serious allergic reaction after getting Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine and is now hospitalized but stable, a report said Wednesday.

The New York Times reported that the person received their shot on Tuesday, and Pfizer confirmed that the company was working with local authorities to investigate the incident.

Two health workers in Britain had similar allergic reactions, causing the government there to tell people to avoid getting the shot if they had a history of severe allergies.

The US regulator issued an emergency approval with the warning that people who had known allergies to ingredients inside the vaccine should avoid it.

“We don’t yet have all the details of the report from Alaska about a potential serious allergic reactions, but are actively working with local health authorities to assess,” a Pfizer spokesperson said.

“We will closely monitor all reports suggestive of serious allergic reactions following vaccination and update labeling language if needed.”

Volunteers for Pfizer’s clinical trial of 44,000 people were excluded if they had a history of allergic reactions to vaccines or components of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Overall, the trial found no serious safety issues, but regulators and the company are continuing to monitor for adverse events after vaccination.

Anti-Semitism: US Senate Passes Bipartisan Bill To Elevate Special Envoy Status

0

A bipartisan bill to elevate the status of the U.S. special envoy on anti-Semitism overwhelmingly passed in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday and now goes to U.S. President Donald Trump for his expected signature into law.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) reintroduced the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Act in January 2019. If enacted, it would upgrade the status of the special envoy to combat anti-Semitism, a position at the U.S. State Department, to an ambassadorship requiring U.S. Senate confirmation.

The president would be required to fill the position within 90 days.

Having been vacant at the start of the Trump administration, the special envoy was designated in February 2019 with the appointment of Iraq war veteran and attorney Elan Carr.

“Anti-Semitism continues to rise at an alarming rate across the globe,” Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., who led sponsorship of the bipartisan bill, said in a statement Wednesday after the vote, which passed unanimously. “To equip the State Department to better address rising anti-Semitism, it is critical that we elevate the role of the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism to Ambassador-at-Large.”

Saudis Remove Anti-Semitism, Anti-Zionism From Textbooks — Monitoring Group

0

There has been a notably reduction of anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist content in Saudi Arabian textbooks for the coming school year, a Jerusalem-based monitoring group found in a report released Tuesday.

The report came amid recent talk of possible normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, as part of a regional shift that has seen Israel agree to open ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. Last week, senior White House adviser Jared Kushner said that normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia is “inevitable.”

“While the latest… report did not find that new tolerant material had been injected into the curriculum, it did find a substantial amount of offensive material had been removed,” IMPACT-se, which reviews educational material, said in a statement.

It found that the books no longer include a religious prediction of a war in which Muslims would kill all the Jews — a prophecy it said had served as a foundation for much of the anti-Semitic attitudes in the Muslim world.

And the classic anti-Semitic trope that Jews, identified as “Zionist forces,” use villainous methods, including money, women, and drugs to control the world has been dropped.

Security Challenges: Borno State Governor Meets President Déby In Chad

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Wednesday, met with the President of the Republic of Chad, Idriss Déby.

The meeting, which held at the Presidential Palace in N’Djamena, was also attended by the Chadian Ambassador to Nigeria, Abakar Chahaimi, as well as the Nigerian Ambassador to Chad, Zannah Kolo.

According to a statement titled, ‘Zulum meets Chad’s President Deby over thousands of Borno refugees’, Zulum said the meeting was convened over the repatriation of Nigerian refugees who fled to Chad after they were displaced by the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

The statement quoted Zulum as saying, “I am here in Chad to see our people currently taking refuge at The Darsalam camp in Baga Sola.

“We met them yesterday (Tuesday). Our people are doing very well, the Government of Chad is taking care of them. So, I am here to express appreciation to the President for his generosity towards our people here in Chad.”

The Borno State governor also said efforts are on to bring back those who are willing to be safely resettled in different parts of Borno.

“Before today’s meeting with the Chadian president, Zulum crossed over the Lake Chad on Tuesday to the refugee camp in Baga Sola, interacted with citizens, and supervised the distribution of N50 million to 5,000 families as part of social protection,” the statement added.

It was earlier reported that following the killing of 43 rice farmers by Boko Haram members in November, the governor made six recommendations to the Federal Government to defeat the insurgency.

The recommendations included the engagement of the services of the governments of Chad, Cameroon, and Niger Republic as well as the services of mercenaries to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

Zulum had also recently received a delegation of the Cameroonian military at the Government House in Maiduguri, the state capital.

2021 Budget: National Assembly To Pass Appropriation Bill Monday

The National Assembly announced on Wednesday that it would hold an emergency session on Monday next week to consider and pass the 2021 Appropriation Bill before proceeding on its Christmas/New Year break on the same day.

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, who announced the development at plenary on Wednesday, said the delay was to accommodate fresh demands from the executive arm of government regarding the fiscal document.

The Federal Government had on Tuesday, written the National Assembly to demand a fresh review of the 2020 Appropriation Act.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, particularly asked the National Assembly to extend the expiration date of the capital component of the 2020 budget

Lawan told his colleagues that the Parliament resolved to take certain legislative decisions in order to ensure the January to December budget cycle.

He said, “There was a late request for some more expenditure from the executive arm of government and we want to ensure our committee produce a very clean document so they can’t present this report today.

“However, they (the committee) said the report will be ready by weekend.

“Consequently, the Senate will hold a special session on Monday 21st of December, just to consider and pass the budget 2021.

“This is in keeping with our legislative agenda of ensuring that annual budget has January to December cycle.”

Party Politics: APC Names Oyegun Chairman Of South-South Reconciliation Committee

The Caretaker/ Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee of the All Progressives Congress has appointed a former National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, as chairman of its South-South reconciliation committee.

The decision was announced in a communique signed by the Secretary of the committee and an APC Chieftain from the region, Lucky Imasuen, after a meeting of party leaders from the geo-political zone in Abuja on Tuesday. The communique was made public on Wednesday.

Other members of the committee include: Lucky Imasuen who was named as secretary; Chief Sunny Jackson, Dr. Mrs. Maryam Ali, Dr. Sam Jaja, Senator Clever Ikisikpo and Chief Emmanuel Nsan.

The communique read in part, “The meeting applauds Mr. President for the tremendous work he is doing under very difficult circumstances. Consequently, a vote of confidence was passed on the administration of president Muhammadu Buhari.

“The meeting resolved that leaders must work together in harmony in the interest of the party and our people

“The meeting condemned the divisions amongst the leaders and urged on the need to foster unity in the zone.

“The meeting resolved to set up a committee of six persons of integrity to handle reconciliation and issues from the various states.

“The meeting called on leaders to use the membership revalidation, and update exercise as a tool for ramping up our support base and for unification of the party in the region.”

Party leaders at the meeting also reiterated the resolution of the National Executive Committee of the party asking all members who had pending litigations against the party and or its leaders to withdraw them from court.

Two federal lawmakers from Rivers State who defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to join the APC were also formally received during the meeting.

The two members of the Federal House of Representatives: Chisom Dike and Ephraim Nwuzi, representing Elemetai, Oyigbo and Etche and Omuma federal constituencies respectively, were welcomed into the party fold as they promised to work hard towards the growth and success of the party going forward.

SIM Registration: Extend Deadline For NIN Update To 10 weeks, Reps Tell FG

The House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to extend the deadline for the provision of National Identification Number by telecommunication service subscribers to 10 weeks.

The House, at the plenary on Wednesday, described the two weeks given to SIM card users by the Nigerian Communications Commission to provide their NIN to service providers as grossly inadequate.

The Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, had moved a motion of urgent public importance to demand more time.

Adopting the motion, the House resolved that the exercise should end on January 28, 2021, as against December 30, 2020.

The NCC had threatened that SIM cards not linked to NIN issued by the National Identity Management Commission would be blocked.

The motion was titled ‘Need for the Nigerian Communications Commission to Give Nigerians Reasonable Time to Submit their National Identification Number for SIM Registration.’

Moving the motion, Elumelu recalled that in January 2020, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Ali Pantami, issued a statement in which telecoms service subscribers were mandated to get their National Identity Numbers and submit them to the network operators, “with the aim of ascertaining the true identities of all subscribers and thereby blocking loopholes currently being exploited by unscrupulous individuals.”

The Minority Leader said, “The House is concerned that as laudable as the idea behind the policy may seem, the timing is very wrong because Nigerians have not been properly sensitised, as only a few educated persons who bother to read the dailies might have heard about this instructions. Therefore, trying to enforce this policy in a period where most Nigerians are gearing up for Christmas festivities may lead to stampede in the process of rushing to get registered, which could lead to unnecessary death and injuries.

“The House is further concerned that if the NCC is allowed to carry out this directives, it will bring about untold hardship as millions of subscribers will be disconnected this Yuletide period, which could spell disaster in an already volatile nation like ours.

“The House is worried that if the NCC is not urgently called to halt their plans, there may be unnecessary panic in the country which may lead to exploitation of vulnerable Nigerian, thereby causing more pains in an already pathetic situation hence the need to urgently wade into this impending crisis.”

Elumelu prayed the House to resolve that “the NCC should give a reasonable amount of time to enable Nigerians meet with the instruction of submitting their National Identification Numbers to service providers and not the two weeks given.”

Chairman of the House Committee on Telecommunications, Akeem Adeyemi, also backed the motion.

The Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu, however, called for the amendment of the prayer to give the NCC a specific time. He prayed that the deadline should be extended by eight weeks, to February 28.

A member, Julius Ihonvbere, however, asked that the exercise should last one year due to the population that would be in a rush to meet the deadline.

Another member, Uzoma Nkem-Abontaa, who seconded the prayer, said, “One year is reasonable enough…It will be a continuous exercise.”

The lawmakers, however, voted against one year and adopted 10 weeks, when the two prayers were put to voice vote.

Another member, Onofiok Luke, urged the House to mandate all relevant agencies to harmonise the data in their separate databases. He noted that the Central Bank of Nigeria issued the Bank Verification Number; Federal Road Safety Corps, driving license; Nigerian Immigration Service, passport; Independent National Electoral Commission, voter card; and telecoms service providers, SIM registration.

The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, however, noted that the House already had a bill seeking synchronisation of all biometric data captured by the agencies.
