China Prepares To Launch Unmanned Spacecraft To Bring Back Lunar Rocks

China is preparing to launch an unmanned spacecraft to bring back lunar rocks, the first attempt by any nation to retrieve samples from the moon in four decades.

Beijing is investing billions in its military-run space programme, with hopes of having a crewed space station by 2022 and eventually sending humans to the moon.

The Chang’e-5 probe aims to shovel up lunar rocks and soil to help scientists learn about the moon’s origins, formation and volcanic activity on its surface.

According to Chinese local media, the mission is set to take off from the Wenchang Space Center in the southern island province of Hainan.

In the meantime, no date was provided.

Ankara prevents German vessel from policing Libya arms blockade

0

Turkey prevented German forces belonging to a European Union military mission searching a Turkish cargo ship believed to be taking weapons to Libya, the German military said on Monday. Soldiers from the frigate Hamburg boarded the Turkish vessel, the Rosalina-A, during the night, but had to abandon checks and withdraw after Turkey protested to the EU mission, a German military spokesman said.

Turkey said the Rosalina-A was carrying various materials such as food and paint, and that the search team had violated international law by not waiting for permission from Turkey.

Hong Kong Activist Joshua Wong To Plead Guilty At Trial Over Protest Involvement

0

Prominent Hong Kong dissident Joshua Wong announced he and two other leading activists will plead guilty at the opening of a trial over their involvement in last year’s protests on Monday, adding he expects to be jailed.

Beijing and local authorities have refused demands for free elections and have responded with a growing crackdown against democracy supporters.

Wong, is being prosecuted alongside Ivan Lam and Agnes Chow — two other well-known dissidents — over a protest which took place last summer outside the city police’s headquarters.

Police became a target for demonstrators after tear gas and rubber bullets were routinely used to clear crowds when rallies kicked off last June.

The force’s headquarters was besieged on multiple occasions with crowds hurling eggs and daubing its walls with graffiti.

Prosecutors charged Wong, Lam and Chow with leading, inciting and joining one of the protests outside the station.

Chow had already said she planned to plead guilty, a tactic which can lead to a lighter sentence. Wong and Lam had originally vowed to fight the charges.

The scientist who has been working with NASA for 20 years has 21 patented inventions to his credit.

While at Glenn, Okojie received numerous accolades, including in 2009 the NASA Abe Silverstein Medal for Research and in 2012 the Glenn Research Center Distinguished Publication Award.

Trial Of Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Over Corruption Opens In Paris

0

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy goes on trial Monday for attempted bribery of a judge, being the modern French Head of State to face corruption charges.

Sarkozy is the first to face corruption charges fought furiously for six years to have the case thrown out, denouncing “a scandal that will go down in history.

Prosecutors say Sarkozy promised the judge a plush job in Monaco in exchange for inside information on an inquiry into claims that Sarkozy accepted illicit payments from L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt for his 2007 presidential campaign.

Their case rests in large part on wiretaps of phone conversations between Sarkozy and his longtime lawyer Thierry Herzog, which judges authorised as prosecutors also looked into suspected Libyan financing of Sarkozy’s 2007 campaign.

That inquiry is still underway, though Sarkozy caught a break this month when his main accuser, the French-Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine, suddenly retracted his claim of having delivered millions of euros in cash from Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

Charged with bribery and influence peddling, Sarkozy risks a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a maximum fine of one million euros.

Libya’s rivals meet to discuss transitional government

0

Libya’s rivals on Monday began a second round of talks on a mechanism to choose a transitional government that would lead the conflict-stricken country to elections in December next year, the United Nations said.

U.N. acting envoy for Libya Stephanie Williams headed the online meeting of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum a week after the first round of the talks in Tunisia failed to name an executive authority.

The 75-member forum reached an agreement to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on Dec. 24, 2021. They also agreed to name a volunteer legal committee to work on the “constitutional basis for the election.” The political forum was the latest effort to end the chaos that engulfed the oil-rich North African nation after the 2011 overthrow and killing of dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

The forum took place amid a heavy international push to reach a peaceful settlement to Libya’s conflict. Previous diplomatic initiatives have all collapsed. The warring sides agreed to a U.N.-brokered cease-fire last month in Geneva, a deal included the departure of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya within three months.

Breaking: FIFA bans CAF president for five years

0

An independent Ethics Committee set up by world football governing body FIFA has found CAF president Ahmad Ahmad guilty of corruption charges and has banned him for five years, according to a statement issued by the committee:

“The adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee has found Ahmad Ahmad, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a FIFA Vice-President, guilty of having breached art. 15 (Duty of loyalty), art. 20 Offering and accepting gifts or other benefits) and art. 25 (Abuse of position) of the 2020 edition of the FIFA Code of Ethics, as well as art. 28 (Misappropriation of funds) of the 2018 edition.

The investigation into Mr Ahmad’s conduct in his position as CAF President during the period from 2017 to 2019 concerned various CAF-related governance issues, including the organisation and financing of an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca, his involvement in CAF’s dealings with the sports equipment company Tactical Steel and other activities.

In its decision, following an extensive hearing, the adjudicatory chamber ruled that, based on information gathered by the investigatory chamber, Mr Ahmad had breached his duty of loyalty, offered gifts and other benefits, mismanaged funds and abused his position as the CAF President, pursuant to the FIFA Code of Ethics.

Consequently, the adjudicatory chamber found that Mr Ahmad had breached arts 15, 20 and 25 of the current edition of the FIFA Code of Ethics, as well as art. 28 of the 2018 edition, and sanctioned him with a ban from all football-related activity (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level for five years. In addition, a fine in the amount of CHF 200,000 has been imposed on Mr Ahmad.

The terms of the decision were notified to Mr Ahmad today, the date on which the ban comes into force. In accordance with art. 78 par. 2 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, the full, motivated decision will be notified to Mr Ahmad in the next 60 days after which it will be published on legal.fifa.com.”
