Police IG Proposes 200% Retirement Gratuity

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity arrangement for retired police officers as part of efforts to address longstanding pension challenges within the Nigeria Police Force.

The proposal is being considered by a presidential committee established to review the welfare and retirement benefits of police personnel.

According to a report published on Monday, October 26, 2026, the proposed reforms seek to improve retirement benefits, resolve outstanding pension liabilities and strengthen pension administration.

The initiative also addresses concerns raised by police officers who have repeatedly called for changes to the Contributory Pension Scheme.

What Does the 200% Gratuity Proposal Mean?

Nigerian police officers as Inspector-General of Police proposes 200% retirement gratuity to improve officers' welfare.
The Inspector-General of Police has proposed a 200% retirement gratuity package aimed at improving the welfare of retiring police personnel.

Under the proposed arrangement, eligible police officers could receive enhanced gratuity payments upon retirement.

The package could also provide pension benefits linked to officers’ final salaries.

However, the government has not released final implementation guidelines explaining how the proposed 200 per cent gratuity would be calculated.

Eligibility requirements and payment arrangements remain subject to further consideration.

Why Are Police Officers Demanding Pension Reform?

Retired and serving police personnel have raised concerns about inadequate retirement benefits, delayed payments and administrative difficulties.

Some officers have also demanded that the police be removed from the Contributory Pension Scheme.

These concerns have prompted repeated calls for a more sustainable retirement benefits framework.

The proposed reforms are intended to address those grievances while improving financial security for retired personnel.

Presidential Committee Reviews Proposal

The presidential committee reviewing the matter includes representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Budget Office and National Pension Commission.

The committee is expected to examine the financial and administrative implications of the proposed changes.

The initiative could also extend to officers who retired before the implementation of any new framework, depending on the final recommendations.

Has the Government Approved the Proposal?

The proposed gratuity has not received final government approval.

Its implementation will depend on the committee’s recommendations, available funding and the government’s final decision.

The approval process will also determine whether the changes apply only to future retirees or include existing pensioners.

For now, the proposed arrangement represents a possible reform rather than an approved retirement benefit.
