President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a series of relief measures for airline operators in response to the rising cost of Jet A1 fuel, which has raised concerns about possible disruptions in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this on Wednesday after a high-level meeting with officials from the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, airline operators, and oil marketers.
The meeting was convened to address the sharp increase in aviation fuel prices, which industry players say has become unsustainable.
Keyamo revealed that the President has approved a generous discount on certain outstanding fees owed by airline operators to the Federal Government. He noted that the intervention is aimed at providing immediate financial relief and preventing a potential breakdown of air transport services.
He further disclosed that plans are underway to set up a special committee to review and reduce the multiple taxes and levies currently included in airfares.
According to the minister, the initiative is designed to ease the financial burden on both airlines and passengers, while improving the long-term sustainability of the aviation industry.
The move comes amid mounting pressure in the sector, as operators continue to warn that the escalating cost of Jet A1 fuel poses a serious threat to their operations and the stability of air travel in the country.
