At least 20 people are feared dead following a tragic incident in Lagos, where two passenger boats capsized on Monday night. The collision occurred around 7 p.m. at Imore Lagoon, involving two boats, each carrying 16 passengers. Details about the exact starting point and destination of the boats remain unclear.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that 11 passengers were successfully rescued. He added that both boats were unregistered, and the accident was reported at the Ilashe Police Division.
Hundeyin disclosed that all 32 passengers, along with their belongings, were thrown into the water when the boats overturned. The rescue operation involved the police, local divers, and other emergency responders, who managed to save 11 passengers. Those rescued sustained injuries and were quickly transported to the Naval Town Hospital in Ojo for medical care.
Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing to locate the missing passengers. Attempts to reach the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) for further comments were unsuccessful, as calls to the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Osayintolu, went unanswered.
