U.S. President Donald Trump is set to visit Mount Rushmore in South Dakota on Friday as part of events marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The visit comes ahead of the main anniversary celebration in Washington on Saturday, where Trump is expected to address a crowd on the National Mall before a large fireworks display.
During his stop at Mount Rushmore, Trump will deliver a keynote speech and attend a fireworks event, despite concerns over potential fire risks due to drought conditions in the area.
The president previously visited the national monument in 2020 and has, in the past, joked about having his own likeness added alongside those of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. However, there has been no official move to pursue the idea during his second term.
Instead, Trump has focused on several legacy projects in Washington, including plans for a new White House ballroom, a monumental arch, and renovations to prominent public landmarks.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is expected to accompany the president on the trip, during which Trump will make his second flight aboard the Qatari aircraft being used as Air Force One.
The anniversary celebrations come as Trump faces domestic political pressure over rising fuel prices linked to the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran and concerns among some Republican lawmakers ahead of the November midterm elections.
