Ukraine Urges US Support As Zelenskiy Moves To Adapt To New Political Realities

Zelenskiy urges Ukraine to adapt to changing US politics and secure more military aid, identifying Patriot missiles and F-16 fighter jets as priorities amid Russian attacks.

How Will Ukraine Secure More US Support as Zelenskiy Prioritises Patriot Missiles?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called for his country to adapt to changing political realities in the United States to secure additional military assistance and strengthen its air defences against continued Russian attacks.

Zelenskiy said Ukraine must establish stronger relationships across the American political landscape following the US midterm elections, which saw Democrats take control of Congress. He also identified securing more missiles for the US-made Patriot air defence system as Kyiv’s most urgent military priority.

Zelenskiy Seeks Stronger US Political Support for Ukraine

Speaking in an interview with Ukrainian television channel TSN during an Ibero-American summit in Spain, Zelenskiy said Kyiv needed to adjust its diplomatic approach to the changing political environment in Washington.

He stressed the importance of maintaining bipartisan support in the United States and establishing effective communication with political leaders across both major parties.

According to the Ukrainian president, adapting quickly to the new political structure could create opportunities for increased military and financial assistance.

Ukraine is also seeking to recover approximately $16 billion in assistance that Zelenskiy said Washington had promised but not delivered.

Ukraine has identified additional Patriot air defence missiles as its top military priority amid shortages and continued Russian missile attacks.

His remarks come amid previously strained relations with US President Donald Trump, particularly following a February 2025 meeting at the White House that exposed disagreements over American support for Ukraine.

Patriot Missiles Become Ukraine’s Top Military Priority

Zelenskiy identified strengthening Ukraine’s air defence capabilities as the country’s most pressing military requirement as the war with Russia continues.

He specifically called for urgent supplies of interceptors for the American-made Patriot missile defence system, warning that failure to address shortages could create serious difficulties for Ukraine.

The Patriot system plays a crucial role in protecting Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure against Russian ballistic missile attacks.

Zelenskiy said additional missile supplies could come from the United States, European countries and other international partners.

The United States recently approved a proposed $2.1 billion sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 missiles to Ukraine. However, the expected delivery timeline, extending into the early 2030s, means the approval is unlikely to address Kyiv’s immediate ammunition shortages.

Ukraine Seeks More Operational F-16 Fighter Jets

Beyond Patriot missiles, Zelenskiy said his government was working to ensure Ukraine maintains sufficient operational F-16 fighter jets over the next five to six months.

The aircraft form part of Ukraine’s broader efforts to strengthen its air force and improve its ability to respond to Russian aerial attacks.

Maintaining an adequate number of operational fighter jets is particularly important as Ukraine prepares for another winter of attacks targeting its energy infrastructure.

Zelenskiy described the situation in Kyiv as the most difficult, highlighting concerns about the vulnerability of the country’s power supply and essential infrastructure.

Russia’s Attacks Increase Pressure on Ukraine’s Air Defences

Ukraine is preparing for another winter of Russian strikes against its energy sector, raising concerns about electricity supplies and the protection of critical infrastructure.

The continued attacks have increased the importance of securing additional air defence equipment, particularly interceptors capable of destroying incoming ballistic missiles.

Ukraine’s reliance on international military assistance remains significant as it attempts to protect major cities, energy facilities and other strategic locations.

Zelenskiy says Ukraine is working to maintain sufficient operational F-16 fighter jets over the next five to six months to strengthen its air defence capabilities.

The shortage of Patriot missiles has therefore become a central concern for Kyiv as it seeks to strengthen its defensive capabilities.

Ukraine, US and European Officials Discuss Security Guarantees

Meanwhile, officials from Ukraine, the United States, the European Union and NATO have been discussing possible security guarantees for Ukraine following the eventual end of the conflict.

Zelenskiy said discussions held in Brussels had recorded some progress towards developing proposals for postwar security arrangements.

US envoy Jared Kushner also described the discussions as productive and substantive in a statement shared on X.

The diplomatic efforts come ahead of another round of US-led negotiations involving Ukraine and Russia, scheduled to resume in Abu Dhabi next week.

The talks are expected to form part of broader international efforts to address the conflict and explore possible arrangements for ending the war.

However, with Russian attacks continuing and Ukraine facing urgent military requirements, Zelenskiy maintains that strengthening the country’s air defences and securing reliable international support remain essential.
