The survey, published on Sunday, November 1, showed that 52% of registered voters preferred Democratic control of Congress, compared with 45% who supported Republican control. Another 3% remained undecided.
The findings come as Americans prepare to vote on November 3 in elections that will determine all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats, alongside governorship’s and other state offices.
Trump’s Disapproval Rating Reaches 60%
The NBC News poll also found that President Donald Trump’s disapproval rating had climbed to 60%, the highest recorded by the network across his two presidential terms.
His approval rating stood at 40%, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with the administration’s direction.
According to the survey, 70% of voters believed the country was heading in the wrong direction, while nearly two-thirds wanted a change from Trump’s leadership approach.
The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters between October 28 and 30, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
Economic Concerns Dominate Election Campaigns
Economic challenges remain central to the election, with voters expressing concerns over inflation, living costs, housing expenses and healthcare.
The survey found that 51% of Americans were dissatisfied with their personal financial situation, compared with 49% who expressed satisfaction.
NBC News reported that this marked the first time in 30 years of its polling that financial dissatisfaction exceeded satisfaction.
Approximately three-quarters of respondents also expressed dissatisfaction with the broader US economy.
However, Republicans maintained a narrow two-point advantage over Democrats when respondents were asked which party could better manage the economy.

Republicans Retain Support in Key Strongholds
Despite the Democrats’ national polling lead, Republicans continued to demonstrate support in Republican-held congressional districts and states won by Trump during the 2024 presidential election.
The survey also showed Republicans retaining advantages on immigration and some other policy issues, while Democrats held stronger positions on several concerns surrounding the administration.
Both major parties faced unfavourable public perceptions, highlighting voter frustration across the political divide.

Congress Control at Stake in Tuesday’s Vote
Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, while Democrats are seeking to regain legislative majorities.
The outcome will influence the Trump administration’s ability to advance its legislative agenda, approve spending measures and secure confirmation of presidential appointments.
Democratic control of either chamber could also expand congressional oversight of the administration.
Although the NBC News poll indicates a national Democratic advantage, the results of individual congressional contests will determine which party ultimately controls Congress.
With voting scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, turnout in competitive districts and states will be crucial to the final outcome.
